Black Market Broker × Ember Monk — two payoffs on the same face-down play, mono-Chaos
Pieces
- Black Market Broker ×1
SFD-121 · payoff · chaos
When you play a card from face down, play a Gold gear token exhausted.
- Ember Monk ×1
OGN-167 · payoff · chaos
When you play a card from [Hidden], give me +2 Might this turn.
Payoff
Deck
- MONO-CHAOS. Every legend with Chaos in its pair can run both (103.1.b.3), and Chaos is where the [Hidden] package lives.
Prerequisites
- BOTH WATCH THE SAME EVENT, AND THE RULES NAME IT. 811.1.c.3: 'Playing a card from facedown (or "from Hidden") does open a chain' — that is the event, and both triggers key on it with no further condition, so every face-down play is 1 Gold gear token AND +2 Might on the Monk in the same instant.
- THE COST OF THE EVENT IS ONE RAINBOW POWER A TURN AND THEN NOTHING. 811.1.b spells the keyword out: 'you may pay [A] to hide this facedown at a battlefield you control that doesn't already have a facedown card hidden there... Beginning on the next turn, this gains [Reaction] and you may play this, IGNORING ITS BASE COST.' So the hide is 1 rainbow Power and the play is free, whatever the card prints — and it is capped at one face-down per battlefield you control, which is the real throughput limit: one or two a turn in a Duel (485.4), not one per Hidden card in hand.
- AVA ACHIEVER DOES NOT FEED THIS, and it is the obvious mistake to make. OGN-107 Ava Achiever plays a [Hidden] card 'from your hand', not from face down; 811.1.c.1 says outright 'Hide is not a subset of Play', and the Broker's and the Monk's triggers both require the face-down play. Any line that routes Hidden cards through Ava switches both payoffs off.
- The Monk's +2 is 'this turn' and is a continuous modifier, not a 702 buff, so 702.3 never caps it and two face-down plays in one turn stack to +4 — a 4-Might body attacking at 8. The Gold, by contrast, is permanent: 187.5 makes each '[Reaction][>] Kill this, [exhaust]: [Add] [rainbow]', and 315.1.b readies it at your next Awaken, so the Power accumulates while the Might does not.
- It pays for the hide and no more: 1 rainbow Power in, 1 rainbow Power back next turn. What the pair actually buys is that the Hidden package stops being a tempo tax — every trick you hide is now also a Gold and a swing on the Monk, and 813.1.c.1 lets the face-down play happen on the opponent's turn.
- Seven Energy for both bodies. The Broker's trigger has no location clause, so he may sit at your base; the Monk's +2 is only worth having where he fights.
Steps
- Play Black Market Broker (3 Energy) and Ember Monk (4 Energy), the Monk to a battlefield.
- During an Open State on your turn, pay 1 rainbow Power to hide a [Hidden] card face down at a battlefield you control (811.1.b). Hiding triggers nothing — 811.1.c.2, 'Hiding a card does not open a chain'.
- From the next turn on, play it from face down for free (811.1.b, 'ignoring its base cost'). 811.1.c.3 makes that a play from face down.
- Both triggers fire: the Broker plays a Gold gear token exhausted, and the Monk gets +2 Might this turn.
- The Gold readies at your next Awaken (315.1.b) and is 1 rainbow Power on demand (187.5). Repeat, one face-down per battlefield you control per turn.
Per iteration
+1 Gold gear token and +2 Might on the Monk per face-down play
How it ends
engine — it refunds the Hidden package's hide cost and swings a body; it scores nothing

AUTHORED 2026-09-06 from issue #160. OGN-167 Ember Monk was an uncatalogued partner of black-market-broker-hidden-family (38 partners, 4 entries) even though it is the only other card in the pool that watches the same event. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt; 187.5, 315.1.b, 485.4, 702.3, 811.1.b, 811.1.c.1, 811.1.c.2, 811.1.c.3 and 813.1.c.1 opened in the Core Rules file. No unruled reading. The Ava Achiever exclusion is stated in the entry because it is the trap: 811.1.c.1 makes hiding and playing different acts, and Ava plays from HAND.
