Combo · ENGINE
Call to Battle makes the opponent move, so they become the Attacker on your turn — and Volibear draws for it
Pieces
- Call to Battle ×1
UNL-101 · engine · body
Move a unit you control to a battlefield you control. Then, choose an opponent. They move a unit they control to the same battlefield.
- Volibear, Imposing ×1
OGN-158 · payoff · body
[Shield 3] (+3 Might while I'm a defender.) [Tank] (I must be assigned combat damage first.) When an opponent moves to a battlefield other than mine, draw 1. (Bases are not battlefield.)
Payoff
Deck
- Any legend with Body among its two domains (103.1.b.3) — 17 names: Relentless Storm (OGN-249), Blind Monk (OGN-257), Bounty Hunter (OGN-267), The Boss (OGN-269), Wuju Bladesman - Starter (OGS-019), Might of Demacia - Starter (OGS-023), Purifier (SFD-183), Grandmaster at Arms (SFD-193), Battle Mistress (SFD-203), Grand Duelist (SFD-205), Pridestalker (UNL-183), Wuju Master (UNL-191), Voidreaver (UNL-201), Keeper of the Hammer (UNL-203), Butcher of the Sands (VEN-141), Defender of Tomorrow (VEN-149), Matriarch of War (VEN-153).
- Two battlefields under your control: Volibear stands at one, the forced move happens at the OTHER — his clause says 'other than mine'.
- 12 Energy and 2 Body Power for Volibear, which is the most expensive card in the population.
Prerequisites
- FORCING THEM TO MOVE MAKES THEM THE ATTACKER ON YOUR OWN TURN. 190.3.a keys Contested on the moved unit's controller — 'a Unit controlled by a Player who does not currently Control that Battlefield Moves or otherwise becomes present there' — and 464.2.c.1 makes the Attacker 'the player whose unit(s) applied the Contested status'. Neither says anything about who caused the move. So one enemy body walks into a battlefield you control, in your Main Phase, wearing the Attacker designation, and your garrison plus 465.2.b's summed defence answers it.
- AND THE SPELL TARGETS NOTHING ON THEIR SIDE. 355.10.e: an object 'part of a set of objects chosen in whole or in part by other players' is not a target. 'They move a unit they control' is their choice, made as the spell resolves — so [Deflect] never charges (809.1.c, 809.1.d) and 'can't be moved by enemy spells and abilities' clauses such as `VEN-073 Jagged Cutlass`' do not bite, because the mover is its own controller. The cost is that they choose WHICH body walks in, and it will be the one they least mind losing.
- VOLIBEAR'S PARENTHESIS IS LOAD-BEARING TWICE OVER. 'When an opponent moves to a battlefield other than mine, draw 1. (Bases are not battlefield.)' — so the forced move must land somewhere Volibear is NOT, which means two battlefields under your control, and a move to base pays nothing. That parenthesis is also why he never draws off an opponent retreating.
- He is the board on his own while he does it: 10 Might, [Shield 3] making him 13 defending (814.1.c), and [Tank] making every other body of yours an invalid damage assignment until he has lethal (815.1.c.2). At 12 Energy + 2 Body Power he is the most expensive card in the Body population and this entry does not pretend otherwise — the pairing is what makes the twelfth Energy do something on the turns nobody attacks him.
- Three copies of Call to Battle (103.2.b) is three cards and three forced attacks; Volibear's trigger has no once-per-turn clause, so any other source of enemy movement pays him too — `UNL-202 Void Assault` and `OGN-043 Charm` among them. That is a synergy-rule shape, and this entry names the one partner that also hands you the combat.
- 144.1.b is not in the way: the spell moves both units by EFFECT, and 420.3.a puts the exhaust cost on the Standard Move alone, so nothing is exhausted on either side.
Steps
- Control two battlefields. Play Volibear, Imposing (12 Energy + 2 Body Power) at one of them.
- Cast Call to Battle (3 Energy). Move one of your units to the OTHER battlefield you control — the one Volibear is not at.
- Choose an opponent. They must move a unit they control to that same battlefield.
- Volibear's trigger fires: an opponent moved to a battlefield other than his. Draw 1.
- Their arrival applies Contested (190.3.a, 190.3.a.1), so 464.2.c.1 designates THEM the Attacker in your own Main Phase, and the combat resolves with your garrison defending.
Per iteration
-1 card, -3 Energy, +1 card drawn, one enemy unit dragged into a battlefield you control as the Attacker
How it ends
engine — one card and one forced enemy attack into your own garrison per Call to Battle, three times a game (103.2.b); nothing here scores

AUTHORED 2026-09-07, issue #173. UNL-101 Call to Battle and OGN-158 Volibear, Imposing were both in ZERO entries. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt; 103.1.b.3, 103.2.b, 144.1.b, 190.3.a, 190.3.a.1, 355.10.e, 420.3.a, 464.2.c.1, 465.2.b, 809.1.c, 809.1.d, 814.1.c, 815.1.c.2 opened in the Core Rules file. Both cards legal in both formats; neither is Signature. No unruled reading. The contrast with the other forced-move card in the slice is deliberate: here the OPPONENT chooses which body moves (355.10.e, so [Deflect] is free), whereas a mover that chooses for them pays 809.1.c.
