Prerequisites
- THE DISTINCTION THIS ROW EXISTS TO RECORD: Renata is worth nothing on a UNIT token made during the opponent's turn, and everything on a GOLD one. A unit cannot Standard-Move in a Closed State (144.1.b) and combat does not read exhaustion (#61), so an exhausted body on their turn is no worse than a ready one. A Gold is the opposite — 187.5 makes it '[Reaction][>] Kill this, [exhaust]: [Add] [rainbow]', so an EXHAUSTED Gold cannot pay its own cost and is dead until your next Awaken (315.1.b). Renata's replacement (R25 = A) turns it into 1 rainbow Power available in the same window it was created.
- AND THAT WINDOW IS THE ONE THE GAME OTHERWISE STARVES. 167 empties every Rune Pool at the start of your Main Phase AND at the end of each player's turn, and 415.3.a readies your objects only during the Awakening Phase on YOUR turn — so a rune exhausted on your own turn is dead for the whole of the opponent's, which is exactly what dark-child-off-turn-reactions is built to fix. This fixes it a different way: the Cask converts an off-turn spell into a Gold, and Renata makes that Gold immediately spendable on the NEXT off-turn spell. CORRECTED 2026-10-26 (#468): 'dead for the whole of the opponent's' is true of ENERGY only (164.2.a is an exhaust ability) and false of Power: a rune exhausted on your own turn can still be recycled for Power on theirs (164.2.b, quoted in the correction under the 'free floor' paragraph below).
- So it chains: play a [Reaction] on their turn → the Cask's trigger → a ready Gold → kill it for 1 rainbow → put that Power into the next [Reaction]. The Cask's own exhaust caps it at one Gold per turn (315.1.b readies it each Awaken), so the chain is one link long per opponent turn unless a gear-readier is on the board.
- The trigger needs a SPELL played on an opponent's turn, which in practice means the [Reaction] keyword (813.1.c.1) or an [Action] spell inside a Showdown (806.1.b) — not a unit or a gear. Both cards are cheap (1 Energy and 4 Energy + 1 Order Power) and neither does anything on your own turn.
- It is one Power a turn, which against #44's measured free floor of 2 Power a turn is small in absolute terms and large in timing terms: the free floor is your own runes, which are already exhausted when the opponent acts. CORRECTED 2026-10-26 (#468): 'large in timing terms' and 'which are already exhausted when the opponent acts' are withdrawn. An exhausted rune CAN pay Power on the opponent's turn. Core Rules 164.2: "A Basic Rune always has the following two Abilities:" 164.2.a: "[E]: [Reaction] — Add [1]." 164.2.b: "Recycle this: [Reaction] — Add [C]." 164.2.b.1: "The Power added this way corresponds to the Domain of the Rune that is being Recycled." 164.2.b has no exhaust in its cost and is [Reaction] speed, and 813.2 says: "The corresponding card or effect with this keyword is not restricted to Closed States or Showdowns. This permission is inclusive of all other timings and options available to the ability as written, Action's permissions, or by default." So it is playable on the opponent's turn (in a Closed State, 813.1.c.1, or a Showdown) from a rune exhausted for Energy on yours. 167 empties the Rune Pool, not the board, and 415.3.a only stops the rune READYING, which 164.2.b does not need. RE-DERIVED TIMING: the Cask adds NO timing the floor lacks, since both are Power available off-turn. What it adds is COST. After #456/#460 the floor is flat, not free: a recycled rune goes to the bottom of the Rune Deck (416.1.b) and 430.1 channels from the top, so it is back on T7 at the earliest going first and T6 at the earliest going second, with only the Channel Phase's two a turn (161.2.a, 315.3.b, 485.7); each two more recycled push it a turn later, and a card that channels more (430.2) brings it back sooner. Until then each Power from 164.2.b leaves the board a rune short. The Gold's [A] (187.5, 135.2.e.5) costs no rune, so it is the one off-turn Power that does not shrink the board, and it is domainless where 164.2.b.1 ties a recycled rune's Power to that rune's Domain. Once the Rune Deck is empty the Cask's Power is one more than the floor's two, and nothing else. STATUS KEPT verified: the mechanism (Renata makes the Gold ready, so it pays in the window it appears) is untouched and walked; only the value claim is weakened, and it is now 'one rune-free, domainless Power a turn', not 'the only off-turn Power'.
- Sibling: chemtech-cask-broker-double-gold pairs the Cask with Black Market Broker for two Gold per off-turn play; that row is about the COUNT, this one is about the STATE. They compose.
Steps
- Have Renata Glasc, Industrialist (4 Energy + 1 Order Power) and Chemtech Cask (1 Energy) on the board, and hold a [Reaction] spell with runes still ready.
- On the opponent's turn, play that spell in a Closed State (813.1.c.1) or inside a Showdown (806.1.b).
- The Cask's trigger fires: exhaust it to play a Gold gear token. Its printed 'exhausted' is overridden — Renata makes it enter READY (R25 = A, and 143.4.a admits the alteration).
- Kill the Gold and exhaust it for 1 rainbow Power (187.5), immediately, in the same window.
- Spend that Power on the next [Reaction] this turn. Repeat next opponent turn; the Cask readies at your Awaken (315.1.b).
Per iteration
+1 rainbow Power usable on the opponent's turn, per opponent turn
How it ends
engine — off-turn Power, which is the only kind 167 and 415.3.a make scarce. CORRECTED 2026-10-26 (#468): not the only kind; an exhausted rune can still recycle for Power off-turn (164.2.b), so what the engine adds is one rune-free, domainless off-turn Power a turn, not scarce timing

AUTHORED 2026-09-06 from issue #160. SFD-063 was an uncatalogued partner of renata-industrialist-tokens. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt; 143.4, 143.4.a, 144.1.b, 167, 187.5, 315.1.b, 415.3.a, 464.2.c.3, 465.2.b, 806.1.b and 813.1.c.1 opened in the Core Rules file. Stands on R25 = A; no new reading. It exists to record a distinction the walk drew while writing the other two Renata rows and which is easy to get backwards: 'enters ready' is worthless on a unit token made in a Closed State and decisive on a gear token whose own ability costs an exhaust.
