Combo · ENGINE
Three answers to a gear in this domain, at three prices, and only one of them has no condition at all
Pieces
- Disarming Rake ×3
SFD-032 · payoff · calm
When you play me, you may kill a gear.
Payoff
Deck
- Mono-Calm, so 103.1.b.3 admits any legend with Calm in its pair.
- Not banned or restricted in either format, and not a Signature card.
- Nothing. The kill is optional, so 203.3 never makes it uncastable and an empty board leaves a 2 Might body.
Prerequisites
- THE THREE ANSWERS, AND WHAT EACH ONE CANNOT DO. `SFD-074 Pickpocket` (Mind, E3, 3 Might) kills 'a gear with Energy cost no more than :rb_energy_1:' and pays you a Gold - so it answers the Seal cycle (all six are Energy cost ZERO) and the E1 Equipment, and nothing above. `UNL-070 Turn to Dust` (Mind, E2) gives a gear [Temporary], which 816.1.b kills at the start of ITS CONTROLLER's Beginning Phase - so it answers anything at all, a full turn late. `SFD-032 Disarming Rake` (Calm, E3 + 1 Power, 2 Might) kills any gear immediately, with no condition. Three prices for three different limits, and the Rake's is the highest because it has none.
- IT REACHES AN EQUIPPED GEAR. 718.5.b: 'Attached cards still can be chosen or targeted by game effects while Attached', so an Equipment sitting on a unit is a legal choice - and 719.5 detaches it from its carrier as it leaves the board, with 719.5.a letting that card's controller order the detaches. In a format where the Equipment BURSTs are built on a single copy of a [Unique] gear, an unconditional answer at 3 Energy is the whole point.
- AND IT IS A KILL, NOT A BANISH OR A BOUNCE, WHICH CUTS BOTH WAYS. The gear reaches the Trash, so 808.1.a ('It is present on Permanents') lets any Deathknell on it fire and any 'from your trash' payoff can reach it later. Neither of the other two answers in the domain does better - both also kill - so against a gear whose death pays its owner, this domain has nothing.
- THE OPTIONALITY IS WORTH SAYING, BECAUSE THE SAME LANE HAS THE COUNTER-EXAMPLE. 'You may kill a gear' means the trigger never fails for want of a target and 203.3 never bites; contrast SFD-044 Legion Quartermaster in this same lane, whose additional cost has no 'you may' and whose card cannot be played at all with no friendly gear on the board. Two Calm three-drops, one of which is always castable and one of which is not.
- THE BODY IS THE PRICE. 2 Might for 3 Energy and 1 Power is below rate on purpose - compare SFD-037 Navori Scout at 4 Energy for 4 Might with [Deflect], or VEN-026 Field Musicians at 4 for 3 with a one-shot pump. What you are buying is the trigger; the body is what is left over.
- WHY IT IS A SINGLE-CARD ENTRY. Nothing in the pool makes an unconditional kill better, and the card reads the opponent's board rather than yours - so there is no partner to price. The comparison with the other two answers IS the content.
- WHAT IT IS NOT. Nothing here scores; 469 defines Scoring as Conquer or Hold.
Steps
- Hold Disarming Rake until a gear worth 3 Energy and a Power appears - an Equipment carrying a BURST, a Seal that is paying for a counter suite, or a standing engine gear.
- Play it (3 Energy + 1 Power) and take the kill. 718.5.b makes an attached Equipment a legal choice.
- 719.5 detaches it from any carrier as it leaves the board; 719.5.a lets that card's controller order the detaches.
- Against nothing worth killing, play it anyway for the 2 Might body - the trigger is optional, so 203.3 never applies.
- If the target is Energy cost 1 or less, SFD-074 Pickpocket does the same job for no Power and pays a Gold; if the answer can wait a full turn, UNL-070 Turn to Dust does it for 2 Energy.
Per iteration
one gear of any cost removed immediately, per copy, on a body that lands whether or not there is a target
How it ends
engine only - three copies by 103.2.b, one gear each; nothing here scores

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-07 (issue #188). The first entry to use SFD-032 Disarming Rake. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt. Citations opened and quoted: 103.1.b.3, 103.2.b, 203.3, 469, 718.5.b, 719.5, 719.5.a, 808.1.a, 816.1.b. A single-card entry on the precedent of sinister-poro-attack-evacuate: nothing improves it and its value is a property of the card. The three-answer comparison is the content, and all three are named with the limit each one carries. Ban check: not banned or restricted, not a Signature card. No unruled reading.
