Ember Monk × Edge of Night — an Equipment that attaches itself for free, and pays the Monk
Pieces
- Ember Monk ×1
OGN-167 · payoff · chaos
When you play a card from [Hidden], give me +2 Might this turn.
- Edge of Night ×1
SFD-139 · engine · chaos
[Hidden] (Hide now for 1 Power of any domain to react with later for 0 Energy.) When you play this from face down, attach it to a unit you control (here). [Equip] 1 Chaos Power (1 Chaos Power: Attach this to a unit you control.)
Payoff
Deck
- MONO-CHAOS. Every legend with Chaos in its pair can run both (103.1.b.3), and Chaos is where the [Hidden] package lives.
Prerequisites
- IT SKIPS THE [Equip] COST ENTIRELY, WHICH IS THE POINT. 818.1 makes Equip an Activated Ability with a cost to pay — Edge of Night prints '[Equip] 1 Chaos Power' like any other Equipment — but its own play trigger reads 'When you play this from face down, attach it to a unit you control (here)', which is an effect, not an activation. Played from face down under 811.1.b it costs 0 Energy and attaches for nothing: the whole card is bought with the 1 rainbow Power of the hide.
- Its '(here)' is the card writing 811.1.d.2 into itself: a hidden card's play effect must choose from among options at the battlefield it was hidden at. So the unit that gets the +2 Might Bonus (137.3) is one standing where you hid the gear, and Ember Monk should be that unit — he ends the turn at 4 + 2 (Might Bonus) + 2 (his own trigger) = 8.
- The two payoffs stack because they are different kinds. The Might Bonus is permanent while attached (137.3.a takes it away the moment it detaches); the Monk's +2 is 'this turn' and is a continuous modifier, not a 702 buff, so 702.3's one-per-unit cap never touches it and a second hidden card played the same turn adds another +2.
- One hide per battlefield you control per turn (811.1.b), so the Monk's ceiling is +2 per controlled battlefield per turn — in a Duel (485.4) that is +4, not +2 per card in hand. That cap is the honest throughput of every [Hidden] payoff in the pool.
- Both triggers key on the same event and the rules name it: 811.1.c.3, 'Playing a card from facedown (or "from Hidden") does open a chain.' 811.1.c.1 keeps hiding out of it — 'Hide is not a subset of Play' — so nothing here fires on the hide.
- Sibling: black-market-broker-ember-monk-hidden runs the Monk with SFD-121 Black Market Broker, which watches the same event for a Gold token. That row is about a second PAYOFF on one event; this one is about the cheapest CAUSE, and the three compose.
Steps
- Play Ember Monk (4 Energy) to a battlefield you control.
- In an Open State on your turn, pay 1 rainbow Power to hide Edge of Night face down at that same battlefield (811.1.b).
- From the next turn, play it from face down for 0 Energy. 811.1.c.3 makes that a play from face down.
- Its own play trigger attaches it to a unit you control here — the Monk — with no [Equip] cost paid (818.1 is bypassed, because this is an effect and not the activation).
- The Monk is now 4 + 2 from the Might Bonus (137.3), and his own trigger adds +2 this turn: 8 Might.
- Repeat with the next hidden card; the Might Bonus stays, the +2 does not.
Per iteration
a free Equipment attach and +2 Might on the Monk per card played from face down
How it ends
engine — the [Hidden] package's hide cost bought back as board presence; it scores nothing

Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt; 103.1.b.3, 137.3, 137.3.a, 485.4, 702.3, 811.1.b, 811.1.c.1, 811.1.c.3, 811.1.d.2 and 818.1 opened in the Core Rules file. Both cards checked against data/legality.json by base code: legal in both formats. No unruled reading. Edge of Night was chosen out of the 37 because it is the only [Hidden] card in the pool that ATTACHES ITSELF on the face-down play, which turns the hide's 1 rainbow Power into a permanent Might Bonus as well as the Monk's temporary +2.
