Payoff
Deck
- Calm + Mind: Honeyfruit is mono-Calm and Energy Conduit mono-Mind (103.1.b.3), so 103.1.b.2 needs a legend covering both - OGN-255/OGN-303 Nine-Tailed Fox, SFD-189/SFD-244 Fire Below the Mountain, UNL-189/UNL-230 Bashful Bloom or VEN-145/VEN-192 Curator of the Sands.
- Neither card is banned or restricted in either format, and neither is a Signature card.
- For Honeyfruit's upgraded mode, 6 XP banked and never spent: 824.1.d makes the Dependent Ability Inactive the moment the counter drops below six.
Prerequisites
- THE PROBLEM THESE TWO CARDS EXIST TO SOLVE, IN THREE PARAGRAPHS. 415.3.a: 'A player Readies all non-spell Game Objects they Control during the Awakening Phase on their turn', so a rune exhausted on your turn is dead for the whole of the opponent's. 164.2.a is the exhaust-for-Energy ability and 164.2.b is the recycle-for-Power one, which carries NO exhaust - so an already-tapped rune still pays Power on their turn and can never pay Energy. And 167 empties every Rune Pool at the start of each Main Phase and the end of each turn, so nothing is banked across the gap. The result is the position every reactive Calm/Mind deck is actually in: Power on the opponent's turn, and no Energy.
- WHICH MATTERS BECAUSE THE COUNTER SUITE NEEDS BOTH. OGN-045 Defy is 1 Energy + 1 Power, VEN-039 Crumbling Sands 1 + 1, SFD-045 Not So Fast 2 + 1, OGN-064 Wind Wall 3 + 2, OGN-080 Mystic Reversal 4 + 3 - every one of them wants Energy on a turn that cannot produce it. These two gear are the fix, and they are permanents, so the Energy is available every one of the opponent's turns rather than once.
- 429.3 IS WHY IT ARRIVES IN TIME. 'Activated abilities that Add resources and have the Reaction tag can be activated at any time that spells or abilities require resources be paid', with Riot's own example spelling out that this includes the Pay Costs step after you have begun playing the spell. 429.2 resolves such an ability as soon as it is finalized and 429.2.a stops Priority and Focus passing while it does - which is the reminder text 'Abilities that add resources can't be reacted to' is pointing at.
- THE SWEEP, WITH ITS MEMBERS NAMED. In Calm/Mind the unconditional permanents are exactly these two.
- HONEYFRUIT'S RIDER IS A CONTINUOUS DEPENDENT ABILITY, NOT A PLAY TRIGGER. 824.1.d makes it Active or Inactive as the counter moves, so a Honeyfruit played at 0 XP simply improves when you reach six - unlike a [Level] rider on a play trigger, which is spent for good if the copy is played early. Below six it is 1 rainbow Power; at six it is 1 Power AND 1 Energy off the same exhaust, which is the best rate in the domain.
- AND BOTH ARE GEAR, WHICH PAYS TWICE. 143.4 exhausts only UNITS, so the Conduit is live the turn it lands (Honeyfruit prints its own 'This enters exhausted' and is not); and while they are out they count toward every 'control N or more gear' clause - SFD-072 Dropboarder, VEN-058 Patched Porobot, VEN-064 Plaza Guardian, VEN-076 Repair Specialist.
- WHAT IT IS NOT. Nothing here scores; 469 defines Scoring as Conquer or Hold. And one exhaust each per turn is the cap - 415.3.a readies them only in your own Awakening, so three of each (103.2.b) is the only way to hold more than two answers open.
Steps
- Play Energy Conduit (3 Energy); 143.4 exhausts units and not gear, so it is live at once. Play Honeyfruit (2 Energy), which prints its own 'This enters exhausted' and comes online at your next Awakening (415.3.a).
- Leave them ready at the end of your turn. 167 empties the Rune Pool, but an exhaust-cost ability is not a pool.
- On the opponent's turn, when a spell you want to answer goes on the Chain, begin playing your counter.
- In the Pay Costs step, activate the Conduit for 1 Energy and Honeyfruit for 1 rainbow Power (429.3), and 429.2.a keeps priority from passing while they resolve.
- Past 6 XP, Honeyfruit's upgraded mode pays 1 Energy AND 1 rainbow off the same exhaust - enough for Defy or Crumbling Sands on its own.
- Never spend the XP: 824.1.d switches the upgraded mode off the moment the counter drops below six.
Per iteration
1 Energy and 1 Power available on each of the opponent's turns, rising to 2 Energy and 1 Power past six XP
How it ends
engine only - one exhaust per gear per turn (415.3.a readies them in your own Awakening), three of each by 103.2.b; nothing here scores
