Combo · ENGINE
The Promoter banks the buff a whole PHASE before the Monastery has to pay it — which is the finalization problem Warmog's has to sit out a Conquer to solve

Payoff
Deck
- Enthusiastic Promoter is mono-Calm and Monastery of Hirana is Colorless, so 103.1.b.1 is satisfied by any legend with Calm as one of its two domains. Neither card is Signature.
Prerequisites
- THE PHASE ORDER IS THE ENTRY. 315.1 Awaken, then 315.2 Beginning Phase (315.2.b.2 is the Hold), then 316 Main Phase. A Conquer is a Main Phase event, so the Promoter's buff has been sitting on the board for a whole phase by the time the Monastery's trigger has to be finalized. `monastery-hirana-warmogs-conquer-draw` cannot do that: Warmog's places its buff ON the Conquer, so 383.3.b.1 has already demanded payment before that buff exists, and the entry has to sit out the first Conquer and start paying from the second. This line pays from the first.
- AND THAT IS THE GENERAL SHAPE, NOT A QUIRK OF ONE CARD. A resource produced by another trigger of the SAME event can never fund a 383.3.b base cost, whatever order 383.3.d puts the triggers in. A resource produced in an EARLIER PHASE always can.
- THE PROMOTER IS A REFILL, NOT A RAMP. 702.3 allows one Buff per unit and 702.3.a does not place a second, so 'Buff all units here' restores whatever the Monastery spent last turn and does nothing else. That is exactly the rate this line wants: one buff spent per Conquer, one buff replaced per Hold.
- IT REFILLS THE WHOLE GARRISON, WHICH IS WHY THE PROMOTER BEATS A SINGLE-TARGET BUFFER HERE. Any other buff spender in the deck (Wallop, Call to Glory, Fae Dragon's Gold clause) draws on the same pool and is topped up by the same trigger.
- 'ALL UNITS HERE' IS NOT 'ALL FRIENDLY UNITS', and the entry survives that only because of when it fires. 315.2.b.2 Holds a battlefield you CONTROL, and 323.6 with 190.3.a.1 means a battlefield with opposing units present is Contested rather than held — so at the instant the Promoter's trigger fires there are no enemy bodies there to buff.
- [BACKLINE] IS WHY HE SURVIVES TO KEEP DOING IT: 'I must be assigned combat damage last', so 465.2.c.3's forced-lethal ordering reaches him only after the rest of the garrison, and at Might 2 he is otherwise the first thing that dies.
- THE LINE CONSUMES CONQUERS IT DOES NOT PRODUCE, hence `needs: conquer-engine`. 470 refuses a second Score at the Monastery in one turn and 485.4 puts two battlefields on a Duel table, so the ceiling is one card a turn from this battlefield however the Conquers are generated. And 348.2.a refuses Control to a player who already has it, so re-conquering the Monastery you are holding needs a garrison that leaves — the [Temporary] route of #171.
- 745.2 IS WHY AN UNQUALIFIED "SPEND A BUFF" CAN ONLY TAKE ONE OFF YOUR OWN BOARD, AND THE 741-749 BLOCK WAS CITED BY NOTHING (upgrade 2026-09-12, #191 batch 26 - diagnosed five days earlier by #187 batch 2 and never applied). The cards that print this cost say *"spend a buff"* with NO owner stated, and none of them has ever had to, because the rules say it: **745.2** - *"In order to spend a Counter, the spending player must control the Game Object the Counter is placed on."* It is the general form of the 702.2.b.2 this project cites fourteen times, and its neighbours finish the picture: **749** (*"Counters do not have a controller"*) and **748** (*"Game Objects that change zones to a non-board zone lose all of their Counters"*), which is the real rule behind buff recovery rather than the 702.x usually cited. Measured consequence from the same walk: a change of CONTROL is not a zone change, so **a buff survives a theft and becomes the thief`s to spend** - the exact complement of 718.5.f, under which an Equipment`s Control does NOT follow its carrier while a buff`s spendability DOES.
- 204.3.a IS THE FIRST AND CLEANER SOURCE FOR THIS, AND IT CARRIES THE WORKED EXAMPLE: "When Costs within Instructions appear as the first part of the effect in triggered abilities, the cost is taken to be the base cost of the triggered ability. It must be paid to finalize the triggered ability", with Riot's example being Overzealous Fan - "When I defend, you may kill me to move an attacking unit to its base" - and the note that "in order to finalize the ability to the chain, its controller must kill Overzealous Fan". 383.3.b says the same thing later in the book. The companion is 204.3.b: a cost appearing in a SPELL, in an ACTIVATED ability, or in a LATER part of a trigger's effect is paid on resolution instead, which is the 205 "pay X. If you do, Y" family and the reason the two look alike on the card and behave differently on the chain.
Steps
- Bring Monastery of Hirana as one of your three battlefields (485.4.a, and 485.5 randomly selects one of them, which is stated as a real cost of the line).
- Take Control of it and garrison it with Enthusiastic Promoter and whatever else the deck wants there.
- At your Beginning Phase, 315.2.b.2 Holds the battlefield. The Promoter's trigger buffs every unit there that does not already carry a counter (702.3.a).
- In the Main Phase, conquer the Monastery. 466.5 establishes Control and 466.5.d makes it a Conquer.
- The battlefield's trigger wants a buff spent to finalize (383.3.b.1). The counter placed a phase ago is there to be spent — 702.2.b removes it — and the trigger goes on the Chain and draws you a card.
- Next Beginning Phase, the Hold replaces the counter and the cycle repeats. Nothing is banked across turns except the garrison itself.
How it ends
engine only — one card per Conquer at the Monastery, available from the FIRST Conquer instead of the second, at whatever rate the conquer engine supplies; 470 caps it at one a turn and nothing here scores

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-07, issue #170, from the buff-supply synergy rules; UNL-043 Enthusiastic Promoter was in ZERO entries. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt. The content is the contrast with `monastery-hirana-warmogs-conquer-draw`, whose whole difficulty is that 383.3.b.1 demands the buff before Warmog's has placed it; a buff banked in the Beginning Phase sidesteps that entirely. Trap check: the Hold-triggered buff is NOT claimed to ready anything (315.1.b has already readied everything, the standing no-op); 'all units here' is checked against the possibility of buffing enemy bodies and shown to be impossible at that instant; the battlefield is declared random per 485.5; `needs: conquer-engine` is declared and 348.2.a is named as why re-conquering a held battlefield is not free.
