826.4.b is the uncited mirror of 815.1.c.2 and the two say OPPOSITE things about a second body - a second [Tank] grows the toll booth, a second [Backline] hands the attacker a choice, so the Promoter must be the only one behind the wall he builds
Pieces
- Enthusiastic Promoter ×3
UNL-043 · payoff · calm
[Backline] (I must be assigned combat damage last.) When I hold, [Buff] all units here. (Give each a +1 Might buff if it doesn't have one.)
- Trevor Snoozebottom ×3
UNL-048 · enabler · calm
[Shield] (+1 Might while I'm a defender.) When I hold, play a ready 3 Might Sprite unit token with [Temporary] here. (Kill it at the start of its controller's next Beginning Phase, before scoring.)
Payoff
Deck
- Both cards are mono-Calm (checked against data/cards.json), so 103.1.b.3 admits them under any legend with Calm among its two domains: Nine-Tailed Fox (OGN-255 / OGN-303), Blind Monk (OGN-257 / OGN-304), Unforgiven (OGN-259 / OGN-305), Radiant Dawn (OGN-261 / OGN-306), Fire Below the Mountain (SFD-189 / SFD-244), Grandmaster at Arms (SFD-193 / SFD-245), Blade Dancer (SFD-195 / SFD-246), Emperor of the Sands (SFD-197 / SFD-247), Bashful Bloom (UNL-189 / UNL-230), Wuju Master (UNL-191 / UNL-231), Gloomist (UNL-193 / UNL-232), Green Father (UNL-195 / UNL-233), Rogue Assassin (VEN-139 / VEN-189), Curator of the Sands (VEN-145 / VEN-192), Eye of Twilight (VEN-147 / VEN-193).
- Neither is a Signature card (data/cards.json, signature=false on both) and neither appears in data/legality.json, whose only non-banned row is a 2v2 restriction on a Calm/Body Starter legend that this line never needs.
- 103.2.b allows three of each - but see the notable: three Promoters at ONE battlefield is the anti-synergy this entry is about. Spread the extra copies across battlefields, or hold them.
Prerequisites
- TWO PARAGRAPHS WITH IDENTICAL STRUCTURE THAT SAY OPPOSITE THINGS, AND THIS CATALOGUE HAD CITED ONLY ONE OF THEM. 815.1.c.2 is quoted in this project constantly: 'If more than one unit with Tank is present with the same controller in Combat, damage may be assigned to any of them. Units without Tank are invalid assignments until all units with Tank have lethal damage assigned to them.' 826.4.b is its uncited mirror and inverts both halves: 'If more than one unit with Backline is present with the same controller in Combat, damage may be assigned to any of them. Units with Backline are invalid assignments until all units without Backline have lethal damage assigned to them.' Same first sentence, inverted second - so a SECOND [Tank] body makes the toll booth bigger for everyone else, while a SECOND [Backline] body does nothing for the first: once the ordinary bodies are dead they are both legal assignments and the ATTACKER picks. [Tank] scales with copies; [Backline] does not.
- SO THE PACKAGE WANTS EXACTLY ONE BACKLINE BODY AND AS MANY ORDINARY ONES AS IT CAN BUILD, WHICH IS WHY TREVOR IS THE PARTNER AND NOT A SECOND PROMOTER. Trevor prints [Shield] and no [Backline], so he is a body 'without Backline' for 826.4.b's second sentence: he has to be given lethal before the Promoter is a legal assignment at all. His Hold mints a further one every turn. 826.5 closes the other door - 'Multiple Instances of Backline are redundant' - so stacking the keyword on one body is worth nothing either.
- THE ARITHMETIC, WITH THE BUFFS COUNTED ONCE EACH. 465.2.c reads current Might and 465.2.c.4 caps each assignment at the minimum lethal. Defending: Trevor is M3 plus his own [Shield], which 814.1.b.3 makes 1 when X is omitted and 814.1.c pays only 'While I am a defender' - so 4, and 5 once buffed. The Sprite is M3, 4 once buffed. That is NINE damage the attacker must assign before 826.4.b lets a single point reach the Promoter (M2, M3 buffed). 702.3 caps each body at one buff and 702.2.a leaves it there permanently, so from the second turn on only the FRESH Sprite takes a new one - the wall is rebuilt each turn, it does not grow.
- ORDER THE TWO HOLD TRIGGERS OR THE NEW SPRITE MISSES ITS BUFF. Both fire at 315.2.b.2. 383.3.d gives their controller the order they are PLACED and 340.1 resolves 'The newest Finalized Chain Item' first, so place the Promoter's trigger FIRST and Trevor's LAST: Trevor's resolves first, the Sprite is on the board, and 'all units here' - a programmatic set read at execution, 355.10.d with 359.3.f.2 - then includes it. Placed the other way the Sprite is born after the buff has already been handed out and stands at 3.
- THE WALL IS REBUILT ON PURPOSE, AND THE SPRITE'S WHOLE LIFE IS THE OPPONENT'S TURN. 816.1.b kills a [Temporary] permanent 'At the start of this permanent's controller's Beginning Phase, before scoring' - i.e. at your 315.2.a, one step before Trevor's Hold at 315.2.b.2 mints the next one. So the Sprite that dies is yesterday's and the one that defends has been there for exactly the opponent's turn, which is the only turn a defender's Might is ever read.
- WHAT IT IS NOT: a scoring line, and not a Tank package either. Nothing here gains a point, and adding [Tank] to the Promoter would be worse than useless - 465.2.c.8 hands the ASSIGNING PLAYER the choice when a unit carries exclusionary assignment requirements, and its worked example is Caitlyn, Patrolling given Tank, by name. See caitlyn-taric-backline-last-assignment, which walks the Tank-and-Backline ORDER from 465.2.c.6; this entry walks the CAP that 826.4.b puts on the Backline half.
Steps
- Play UNL-048 Trevor Snoozebottom (3 Energy) and UNL-043 Enthusiastic Promoter (3 Energy) to the same battlefield. 143.4 has both enter exhausted; neither needs to be ready for anything here.
- Take and keep that battlefield. At your next Beginning Phase, 315.2.b.2 Holds it and both Hold triggers fire at once.
- Place the Promoter's trigger on the Chain first and Trevor's second (383.3.d). 340.1 resolves the newest first: Trevor's Sprite - ready, 3 Might, [Temporary] - is played here, and only then does the Promoter's '[Buff] all units here' resolve and catch it.
- On the opponent's turn the garrison defends as Trevor 5 (M3 + [Shield] 1 + buff), Sprite 4 (M3 + buff), Promoter 3 (M2 + buff). 826.4.b makes the Promoter an invalid assignment until Trevor and the Sprite have both been assigned lethal - nine damage.
- At your next 315.2.a the Sprite dies to 816.1.b, and one step later Trevor's Hold mints its replacement. Repeat every turn.
- Do not add a second [Backline] body at this battlefield: 826.4.b would let the attacker choose which of the two to kill after the wall falls, which is the whole protection given away.
Per iteration
one fresh 3-Might [Temporary] Sprite and one new buff per turn, keeping a nine-damage wall in front of a body the attacker is forbidden to touch until the wall is dead
How it ends
engine only - nothing here scores; the Sprite is replaced rather than accumulated (816.1.b kills it every Beginning Phase) and 702.3 caps each body at one buff, so the wall is steady-state at nine damage rather than growing

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-09 (issue #191, uncited sub-rules 500-829, batch 4). 826.4, 826.4.a and 826.4.b were cited by nothing in combos.json or synergies.json; 826.3 and 826.5 were each cited twice. The finding is the ASYMMETRY: this project quotes 815.1.c.2 in dozens of places and had never opened its Backline twin, which inverts the second sentence and therefore inverts what a second body is worth. Companion, and a limit on 826.4.b's own reach: it says 'unit with Backline', while OGN-068 Caitlyn, Patrolling and SFD-173 Soraka, Wanderer print the SENTENCE without the keyword (measured 2026-09-09: grep -ci backline over data/corpus_flat.txt returns 4 - UNL-043, UNL-090, UNL-141, UNL-145 - while six cards carry the effect), so a Caitlyn beside a Promoter is governed by 465.2.c.6's ordering and 465.2.c.8's exclusionary-requirement clause rather than by 826.4.b - a different paragraph, the same verdict, and the same advice: run one.
