Payoff
Deck
- Any Body legend — all three cards are mono-Body (103.1.b.1), so this does not need Lucian's own Fury/Body print. No Signature card is in the line, so 103.2.d.2 forces no legend.
Prerequisites
- THE EXHAUST LEDGER IS THE ENTRY, AND IT BALANCES EXACTLY. Lucian needs THREE exhausts in the turn and has exactly three readies. Awaken readies him (315.1.b, 415.3.a) — exhaust 1 pays the Standard Move to the first battlefield (144.2). He conquers; his own trigger readies him — exhaust 2 pays the Standard Move home. Play First Mate; its 'ready another unit' readies him — exhaust 3 pays the Standard Move to the second battlefield. Two conquers, two points (469.1, 348.2.a.1), 3 Energy on the turn.
- THE ROUND TRIP THROUGH THE BASE IS FORCED, NOT A CHOICE. 144.4 restricts the Standard Move to base <-> battlefield; battlefield to battlefield needs [Ganking] (810.1.c.3), which Lucian does not have. That is why the self-ready is spent going HOME rather than attacking again, and why a second, independent ready source is the whole requirement.
- LUCIAN CANNOT DO THIS THE TURN HE IS PLAYED, AND ISSUE #154's SEQUENCE SAID HE COULD. 143.4 makes units enter the Board exhausted and 144.2 makes the Standard Move cost that exhaust, so the play turn buys only the free Doran's Blade attach; the double conquer starts from the Awakening after. First Mate, by contrast, is played ON the double-conquer turn — its ready is an ETB.
- 383.3.e.1 IS THE RULE THE PAIRING TURNS ON: 'Such a Triggered Ability will only be performed the specified number of times each turn. If its trigger condition would be fulfilled and it has already been performed that many times, it does not trigger.' It caps Lucian's 'the first time I conquer each turn'. It says nothing about First Mate, which is a different ability on a different permanent — so the two readies stack even though a second copy of Lucian's own trigger would not.
- YOU GIVE THE FIRST BATTLEFIELD BACK. 323.6 strips Control of a battlefield with none of your units occupying it at the next Cleanup in an Open State, so walking Lucian home un-conquers the first battlefield. The point is already Gained and nothing undoes it (471.1), but you do not Hold it next Beginning Phase. Sending any cheap body along to garrison it is the fix and is deliberately NOT in uses — it is a fifth card and does not change the mechanism.
- IN A DUEL THERE ARE EXACTLY TWO BATTLEFIELDS (485.4 'Battlefield Count: 2'), so the second conquer is the opponent's, and 470 allows it because it is a different battlefield. If it is unoccupied and uncontrolled the move opens a Non-Combat Showdown (316.8.b.1) and 348.2.a establishes Control with 348.2.a.1 calling it a Conquer — no attack, so the empty-battlefield trap (807.1.d, 383.4.e, 461) is respected. If it is garrisoned, Lucian has to win the combat: 465.2.c has each side assign damage equal to their SUMMED Might, so Doran's Blade's +2 is what takes a lone defender of 4 Might off the board and lets him survive.
- DISTINCT FROM BOTH ENTRIES THAT ALREADY HOLD THESE CARDS. sett-first-mate-windswept-hillock spends First Mate's ready on Sett and needs OGN-297 Windswept Hillock to grant [Ganking]; lucian-skyfinity-double-conquer uses Lucian's OWN ready amplified by Skyfall and Trinity Force to convert Hold payoffs into Conquer payoffs. Neither pairs First Mate with Lucian, and this line needs no battlefield text and no Effect gear — which is why it shows up in registered tournament lists that complete no catalogued line at all.
- IT IS ENGINE, NOT BURST OR CHAIN. Two points, once — First Mate is a one-shot ETB, not a loop, and there is no repeat step. Sustainably Lucian is one conquer a turn on his own.
Steps
- On an earlier turn, play Lucian, Merciless (3 Energy). [Weaponmaster] attaches Doran's Blade for its [Body] Equip cost less one rainbow, which 356.6 floors at 0. He is a 5 Might body and enters exhausted (143.4).
- Double-conquer turn, Awaken: 315.1.b readies him.
- Standard-move him to a battlefield, paying his exhaust (144.2, 144.4). Take it — by combat, or by Non-Combat Showdown if it is empty and uncontrolled (316.8.b.1, 348.2.a). 348.2.a.1 makes it a Conquer: 1 point.
- 'The first time I conquer each turn, ready me' fires and readies him. Standard-move him back to base, spending that ready.
- Play First Mate (3 Energy). 'When you play me, ready another unit' — ready Lucian.
- Standard-move him to the OTHER battlefield and take it. A second Conquer, a second point (470 allows it: a different battlefield).
How it ends
engine — 2 conquer points in one turn off one body, for 8 Energy across two turns; 1 a turn thereafter

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-06 (docs/phase0/walks/2026-09-06-engine-payoff-walk.md). Issue #154's proposed sequence had Lucian played and moved on the same turn, which 143.4 plus 144.2 forbid; the corrected line puts his play a turn earlier and keeps everything else. The exhaust ledger — three exhausts against Awaken + self-ready + First Mate — is the part a walk had to check and it balances with nothing to spare, which is why no fourth sortie exists and why the class is ENGINE. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt; 143.4, 144.1.a, 144.2, 144.4, 315.1.b, 316.8.b.1, 323.6, 348.2.a/348.2.a.1, 356.6, 383.3.e.1, 415.3.a, 465.2.c, 469.1, 470, 471.1, 485.4 and 810.1.c.3 opened and read. Ban check: none of SFD-113, OGN-132 or SFD-095 carries a [BANNED marker, and none is a Signature card. Trap check: no [Temporary]; no [Repeat]; no token; a Standard Move is not a recall (455, 456); 818.1 makes the Weaponmaster attach an Activated Ability rather than a play, so nothing triggers off it; the empty-battlefield trap is respected because the Non-Combat Showdown route conquers without an Attacker designation. SFD-095 is in `uses` although the line's two conquers do not strictly require it — it is what makes Lucian a 5 Might attacker rather than a 3, which is the difference between conquering a garrisoned battlefield and only an open one, and it is the third card of the tournament co-occurrence this entry was walked from. Depends on no unruled reading.
