Combo · ENGINE
One rainbow is exactly what [Weaponmaster] refunds, and the Cape's 'I' is the carrier - so Riven swings twice
Pieces
- Forgefire Cape ×1
SFD-190 · payoff · calm/mind
[Unique] (Your deck can have only 1 card with this name.) [Equip] 1 Power of any domain (1 Power of any domain: Attach this to a unit you control.)
When I attack or defend, deal 2 to all enemy units here.
- Riven, Shattered ×3
VEN-041 · engine · calm
[Weaponmaster] (When you play me, you may [Equip] one of your Equipment to me for 1 Power of any domain less, even if it's already attached.) When I attack, choose an enemy unit here. Deal 2 to it for each Equipment attached to me.
Payoff
Deck
- SFD-190 Forgefire Cape is a SIGNATURE card tagged Ornn, so 103.2.d.2 forces an Ornn legend whose two domains cover calm + mind - and the census prints exactly one such name: SFD-189 / SFD-244 Fire Below the Mountain. No other legend can hold this list.
- Neither card is banned or restricted in either format. The Cape spends one of the three Signature slots 103.2.d.1 allows, and 825.3.a caps it at one copy by its own [Unique] keyword.
- The Cape on the board before Riven is played, since [Weaponmaster] is a play trigger that chooses an Equipment you ALREADY control.
Prerequisites
- THE EQUIP COST IS EXACTLY WHAT THE KEYWORD REFUNDS. 821.1.c reads Weaponmaster as 'choose a Card you control with the Equipment tag ... Pay the cost of its Equip ability, REDUCED BY [A], to attach it to this unit', and 821.1.c.2 determines that cost as though the ability were being activated choosing the Weaponmaster unit. The Cape's [Equip] is one rainbow and nothing else, so the reduction takes it to zero - and 821.1.c.3 is the case that does not apply here ('If the chosen card's Equip cost does not contain [A], it can still be paid, but will not be reduced').
- AND THE ATTACH FIRES NOTHING, WHICH IS WORTH KNOWING BEFORE BUILDING AROUND IT. 821.1.c.6: 'The Equip ability is not activated this way, and the unit with the Weaponmaster ability is not chosen.' So no 'when you use an activated ability of a gear' payoff and no 'when you choose me' payoff triggers off it, where a paid [Equip] would - 818.1.b.1 makes that choice a Target. 821.1.c also says the necessary portions of the Equipment's Rules Text 'are no longer Inactive if they are currently Inactive', which is what lets the keyword take the Cape off another of your bodies (434.1.f detaches it; 434.1.g makes re-attaching to the current host a no-op).
- THE CAPE'S 'I' IS RIVEN, NOT THE CAPE. 136.2.b makes Effect Text Inactive unless attached, 136.2.c appends it to the Top-Most Card's Rules Text, and 053.1 with 136.2.d fix the referent: 'I' and 'me' in appended Effect Text are the CARRIER, while 'this' and the gear's own name stay with the gear - Riot's worked examples are Guardian Angel and Brutalizer. So 'When I attack or defend, deal 2 to all enemy units here' is RIVEN attacking or defending.
- WHICH MAKES ONE ATTACK TWO SEPARATE DEALS. Riven's own clause is 'Deal 2 to it for each Equipment attached to me' - one Equipment, so 2 to a single chosen unit - and the Cape's appended clause is 2 to ALL enemy units there. Both fire on the same attack: a single body dies to 4 and the rest of the garrison takes 2. And because the Cape's half also reads 'or DEFEND', it pays on the opponent's turn as well, which Riven's half does not.
- AND 434.1.d IS THE THIRD THing THE CAPE IS WORTH. 'The Top-Most Card has its Might modulated by the Might Bonus of all cards Attached to it', so Riven is a 6 Might body for 3 Energy + 1 Power once the free attach has happened.
- [UNIQUE] IS WHY THIS IS A ONE-OF AND THE BODY IS NOT. 825.3.a caps the Cape at a single copy in the deck; 103.2.b allows three Rivens, and each of them can take the same Cape off the previous carrier for free (434.1.f). The Cape is the scarce half and the Weaponmaster bodies are the redundant one.
- WHAT IT IS NOT. Nothing here scores; 469 defines Scoring as Conquer or Hold. And 807.1.d ties 'attacking' to the Attacker designation, which 323.9 stages only where opposing units are present - neither clause fires on a walk into an empty battlefield.
Steps
- Play Forgefire Cape (4 Energy + 2 Power). It is [Unique], so this is the only copy the deck may hold (825.3.a).
- Play Riven, Shattered (3 Energy + 1 Power). Her [Weaponmaster] trigger chooses the Cape and pays its Equip cost 'reduced by [A]' - one rainbow less than one rainbow is nothing (821.1.c, 821.1.c.2).
- 434.1.d gives her the Cape's +3, so she is a 6 Might body; 136.2.c appends its Effect Text to her Rules Text.
- Attack. Riven's own clause deals 2 to one chosen enemy unit there, and the Cape's appended clause deals 2 to ALL enemy units there - 4 on the chosen one, 2 on the rest.
- On the opponent's turn the Cape's half still fires when Riven DEFENDS; her own clause does not.
- A second or third Riven can take the same Cape for free later - 434.1.f detaches it from the previous carrier, and 434.1.g is why you never point it at the body already wearing it.
Per iteration
4 damage to one enemy unit and 2 to every other at that battlefield, per Riven attack, with the Equipment attached for nothing
How it ends
engine only - one Cape by [Unique] (825.3.a) and three Rivens by 103.2.b, and neither clause fires on an unoccupied battlefield (323.9 + 807.1.d); nothing here scores

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-07 (issue #188). The first entry to use SFD-190 Forgefire Cape or VEN-041 Riven, Shattered. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt. Citations opened and quoted: 053.1, 103.2.b, 103.2.d.1, 103.2.d.2, 136.2.b, 136.2.c, 136.2.d, 323.9, 434.1.d, 434.1.f, 434.1.g, 469, 807.1.d, 818.1.b.1, 821.1.c, 821.1.c.2, 821.1.c.3, 821.1.c.6, 825.3.a. VEN-041 has a second printing, VEN-171, whose corpus row omits the [Weaponmaster] reminder text but is otherwise identical; CardIndex.equivalents folds them and there is no text difference to worry about - checked, because a multi-base name with different text would be a real matching hazard. The Signature card makes the legend line ONE name, which is the shape test/legend-lines.test.ts is safest with. Ban check: neither card is banned or restricted. No unruled reading.
