356.1.b.3's worked example IS this pairing — a body reanimated 'ignoring its cost' can still buy its own [Accelerate] and come back READY
Pieces
- Heedless Resurrection ×3
UNL-142 · engine · chaos
[Reaction] (Play any time, even before spells and abilities resolve.) As an additional cost to play this, kill a friendly unit. Play a unit from your trash that costs no more Energy and no more Power than the killed unit, ignoring its cost.
- Legion Rearguard ×3
OGN-010 · payoff · fury
[Accelerate] (You may pay 1 Energy + 1 Fury Power as an additional cost to have me enter ready.)
Payoff
Deck
- Heedless Resurrection is mono-Chaos and Legion Rearguard mono-Fury, so 103.1.b.1 needs a Fury/Chaos legend: OGS-017 Dark Child - Starter, OGN-251 / OGN-301 Loose Cannon, SFD-185 / SFD-242 Glorious Executioner, UNL-185 / UNL-228 Bloodharbor Ripper, or VEN-143 / VEN-191 Master of Shadows. Neither card is Signature.
Prerequisites
- THE WORKED EXAMPLE, VERBATIM, BECAUSE IT IS THE ENTRY. 356.1.b.3: 'Further additional costs and/or cost increases applied in subsequent steps may raise the card's Total Cost above zero. Example: Legion Rearguard is a Fury unit that costs 2 Energy and 0 Power and has Accelerate. A player plays Legion Rearguard and is instructed to ignore its costs, but chooses to pay the Accelerate cost. They ignore Legion Rearguard's Base Cost of 2 Energy, but the optional additional cost of 1 Energy and 1 Fury Power is added to its Total Cost and must be paid.' So the reanimated body costs 1 Energy and 1 Fury Power and beats 143.4: it enters READY and can pay 144.2's exhaust the same turn.
- AND THAT GENERALISES TO EVERY 'IGNORING ITS COST' EFFECT IN THE POOL — Portal Rescue, Undying Loyalty, Here to Help, Ava Achiever's hidden play, a [Hidden] card's own free play under 811.1.b. A free play never switches off an optional additional cost; it only zeroes the BASE cost (356.1.b.1).
- THE COMPARISON IS ON PRINTED COSTS AND CANNOT BE FED BY A TOKEN. 206 answers 'costs no more Energy and no more Power than the killed unit' with printed or copied cost, so a discount on the killed body does not shrink the window — and 185 keeps a token from being a card at all, while 186.1 means a killed token never reaches the trash for the other half to find. The additional cost must be a real card, and so must the target.
- IT IS A DEATHKNELL SWITCH AS MUCH AS A REANIMATION. The kill is an ADDITIONAL COST, so it is paid during the steps of playing the spell (as 820.1.c.1 does for [Repeat]); 808.1.c makes a Deathknell 'functionally short for "When I die, [Effect]"' and 808.1.d makes the Trigger the permanent being Killed and sent to the Trash, so a Deathknell body you kill this way fires. That is the second reason to run it beside cheap bodies.
- AND IT IS [REACTION], SO BOTH HALVES HAPPEN INSIDE A COMBAT. 813.1.c.1 admits it 'during Closed States on any player's turn': kill a body that is about to die anyway, return a different one, and 464.2.c.3.a gives the returned unit its designation at the following Cleanup — so the swap happens before 465.2.c reads the summed Might.
- 203.3 IS THE GATE ON THE COST: if there is no friendly unit to kill, the additional cost cannot be paid and the spell cannot be played at all. This is not a card to hold with an empty board.
- THE CEILING IS 103.2.b — three castings, and each Legion Rearguard can only be in the trash once at a time. Nothing here scores.
Bodies no card supplies
Have a Legion Rearguard in your trash (it is a 2-Energy body, so the ordinary way there is having traded it earlier) and another friendly unit of at least equal printed cost on the board
Steps
- Have a Legion Rearguard in your trash (it is a 2-Energy body, so the ordinary way there is having traded it earlier) and another friendly unit of at least equal printed cost on the board.
- Hold Heedless Resurrection. 813.1.c.1 lets it be played in any Closed State on either player's turn.
- In the combat, pay the additional cost: kill a friendly unit whose printed cost is at least as high as Legion Rearguard's. 203.3 is why an empty board makes the spell uncastable; 808.1.c and 808.1.d are why a Deathknell body is the ideal fodder.
- Play Legion Rearguard from the trash ignoring its cost. 356.1.b.1 sets its Base Cost to zero.
- Choose to pay the [Accelerate] rider anyway — 1 Energy and 1 Fury Power — which 356.1.b.3 adds to its Total Cost. It enters READY instead of exhausted (143.4).
- 464.2.c.3.a and 323.2.a give it the Attacker or Defender designation at the following Cleanup, so it is in that combat's damage step; and because it is ready, it can also pay 144.2's exhaust to move the same turn.
- 465.2.c sums a board that has traded a dying body for a fresh, ready one.
How it ends
engine only — one body traded for a ready one per casting, three a game (103.2.b), for E2 + 1 Power plus the 1 Energy and 1 Fury Power of the rider; nothing here scores

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-07, issue #170, from the Core-Rules-named sweep; OGN-010 Legion Rearguard was in zero entries and is 356.1.b.3's worked example, which names this exact interaction. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt. The content is the general rule the example carries: 'ignoring its cost' zeroes only the BASE cost (356.1.b.1) and leaves every optional additional cost payable, which is how a reanimated or free-played body beats 143.4. Trap check: the cost comparison is sourced to 206 (printed costs) and the token halves are closed by 185 and 186.1; 203.3 is named as the gate that makes the spell uncastable on an empty board; the additional-cost kill is stated to fire a Deathknell (808.1.c / 808.1.d) rather than being treated as a neutral price; the returned body's combat designation is sourced to 464.2.c.3.a.
