Heedless Resurrection — kill your own unit in response and it comes straight back
Pieces
- Heedless Resurrection ×3
UNL-142 · engine · chaos
[Reaction] (Play any time, even before spells and abilities resolve.) As an additional cost to play this, kill a friendly unit. Play a unit from your trash that costs no more Energy and no more Power than the killed unit, ignoring its cost.
Payoff
Deck
- Legend domains cover Chaos.
- A real unit on the board worth saving. A token is not one - see below.
Run play
Prerequisites
- The killed unit reanimates ITSELF, which is what makes this more than a trade and is not obvious from the text. The kill is paid in the cost step, so the unit is already in the trash when the spell resolves; the filter is "costs no more Energy and no more Power than the killed unit" and the card never says "another unit", so the unit that just died is always a legal choice for its own replacement. It returns as a new object, exhausted (143.4), and the cost is ignored.
- The opponent's removal then does nothing. 355.7 makes any card that Chooses a Game Object a targeting card, and 359.3.e.5 says "If any of the spell's targets are no longer legal, those game objects, players, or zones are unaffected by the spell as it resolves" - the rest of the spell still happens, so a rider like "Draw 1" still resolves for them.
- The Deathknell fires, unlike under a recall shield. 428.1.a.1 makes a kill paid as a cost an Active Kill and 428.1.a.1.b adds the Deathknell to the chain before the kill completes. Compare 808.1.d.1, which DELETES the Deathknell when a death is replaced by a recall - soraka-fiora-loop-shield and this entry answer the same problem from opposite sides.
- 356.2.a.1 makes the kill mandatory ("as an additional cost", no "may"), so there is no way to play this without spending a body.
- Tokens are not fuel. 186.1: "If a token is put into any Non-Board Zone besides the chain, it ceases to exist" - a token never reaches the trash and has no printed cost, so killing a Bird reanimates nothing.
- Its limits. "No more Energy and no more Power" is two ceilings at once, so a cheap sacrifice buys nothing expensive. Against removal that does not choose - OGN-133 Flurry of Blades, OGN-268 Bullet Time - the illegal-target trick does not exist and all that is left is the body swap. And the opponent sees the Power: 3 copies is 6 Energy and 3 Chaos Power across a game.
Bodies no card supplies
The opponent plays removal choosing your unit X, paying X's Deflect tax if it has one (809.1.c)
Steps
- The opponent plays removal choosing your unit X, paying X's Deflect tax if it has one (809.1.c).
- In response, play Heedless Resurrection for 2 Energy + 1 Chaos Power. Its mandatory additional cost kills X (356.2.a.1, 428.1.a.1), and X's Deathknell goes on the chain first if it has one (428.1.a.1.b).
- Heedless Resurrection resolves: X is in the trash and costs exactly as much as X, so play X back from the trash ignoring its cost. It enters exhausted (143.4) as a new object.
- The opponent's removal resolves with no legal target and does nothing to it (359.3.e.5). They spent a card and its Power; you spent 2 Energy and 1 Power and kept the board.
How it ends
one targeted removal spell answered per copy, with the unit back on the board for 2 Energy and 1 Power

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-06 (docs/phase0/walks/2026-09-06-reaction-deflect-candidates.md), issue #44 candidate 7. Verified as claimed and then found to be stronger than the hunt wrote it: #44 described the payoff as "a unit from the trash of cost <= the killed unit", which reads as a downgrade, and missed that the killed unit is itself in the trash at resolution and costs exactly its own cost, so the card is "your unit dodges the removal and comes straight back, ignoring its cost". The card prints no "another unit". The Deathknell comparison against 808.1.d.1 was added because the two anti-removal shapes in this batch behave in opposite ways on that point.
