Helm of Suppression, Empowered — every opponent spell costs them a rune, and 206 is why it widens none of your own counters
Pieces
- Helm of Suppression ×1
VEN-045 · engine · calm
[Empower] 4 Energy + 1 Calm Power (4 Energy + 1 Calm Power: Empower this. Use only if not Empowered.) Opponents' spells cost 1 Energy more. If this is [Empowered], they cost 1 Energy + 1 Power of any domain more instead.

Deck
- Mono-Calm, so any legend carrying Calm runs it, and the [Empower] cost asks specifically for Calm Power. CORRECTED 2026-10-26 (#473, from the run play docs/plays/2026-10-26-the-helm-costs-your-turn-four-their-two-spells-cost-two-runes-more-and-acceptable-losses-kills-it-for-two.md): both halves ask for Calm Power, the play cost too (135.2.e.6, quoted on step 1).
- Nothing to walk anywhere: gear is played to base (811.1.d.1.a names that as 'the normal restriction that gear have in only being allowed to be played to base') and the Helm's clause carries no location requirement.
Run play
Prerequisites
- THE BILL, COUNTED WHOLE. 4 Energy + 1 Power to play, plus 4 Energy + 1 Calm Power for the [Empower] - 8 Energy and 2 Power in total. Two published figures in this project have already been wrong for leaving the second half of a gear's cost out, so it is written here in both halves. The [Empower] is an Activated Ability with no exhaust in its cost, so it can be paid the same turn the Helm lands, and 441.2 makes 'Empowered' a STATE of a game object on the board - once reached it is permanent, not a turn's buff.
- THE POWER HALF IS THE WHOLE CLAIM, AND IT IS MEASURABLE. +1 Energy per enemy spell is noise. +1 rainbow Power per enemy spell is a different currency: 315.3.b channels each player 2 runes per turn, and 164.2.b turns a rune into 1 Power with no exhaust in the cost, so an opponent's free floor is exactly 2 Power a turn. An Empowered Helm therefore caps at TWO the number of spells they can cast off that floor, and every spell past it recycles a rune off the board into the Rune Deck (161.2.b) - Energy they will not have next turn. It is not a hard cap, it is a conversion of their spells into their own mana development. CORRECTED 2026-10-25 (#461): the first two spells are not free either. Their Power is also recycled runes (164.2.b), which go to the bottom of the Rune Deck (416.1.b) while 430.1 channels from the top, so each is short on every turn until it comes back: T7 at the earliest going first and T6 at the earliest going second with only the Channel Phase's two a turn (161.2.a, 315.3.b, 485.7); each two more recycled push it a turn later, and a card that channels more (430.2) brings it back sooner. Under the tax every spell they cast, not only the third, costs them a rune of development until their Rune Deck is empty; two a turn is the rate that holds their board flat, not a free allowance. The conversion this paragraph names is larger than stated; status unchanged. CORRECTED 2026-10-26 (#473, from the run play docs/plays/2026-10-26-the-helm-costs-your-turn-four-their-two-spells-cost-two-runes-more-and-acceptable-losses-kills-it-for-two.md): there is no cap at two. It rested on the free floor of 2 Power a turn that the 2026-10-24 correction to step 4 withdrew. In the walk they cast two taxed spells in one turn off 9 runes and recycled four, with five runes left: enough for OGN-004 Cleave as a third, taxed at E2 and one Power. The limit is their runes, not a count of spells.
- THE TRAP: IT WIDENS NONE OF YOUR COUNTERS. OGN-045 Defy reads 'Counter a spell that costs no more than 4 Energy and no more than one rainbow', and 206 - whose own worked example IS Defy - says an effect that needs a card's cost 'always use[s] its printed or copied cost, even if that cost is increased, decreased, or ignored as the card is played'. Taxing an enemy spell to 5 Energy leaves it a legal Defy target and always will. Same for VEN-152 Rebuttal's 'no more than 4 Energy'. Anyone reading this entry as a way to push enemy spells out of counter range is reading it backwards.
- IT IS ITS OWN ENTRY AND NOT A NOTABLE ON THE WALL, by the same argument brynhir-lockout-window records: putting it into warden-tianna-base-lock's uses[] would make the matcher demand a card that wall does not need, and the Helm does not need the wall either. Precedent for a one-card ENGINE is that same entry.
- WHAT ANSWERS IT, listed correctly. Issue #100 names VEN-080 Noxian Demolitionist, SFD-074 Pickpocket and SFD-084 Jayce; none of the three can touch this Helm - the first kills a gear with Energy cost no more than its own Might (1), the second caps at 1 Energy, and the third only kills a FRIENDLY gear. What does answer it, from a grep of every gear-removal line in the pool: SFD-005 Detonate (Fury, 1 Energy + 1 Power, and it hands you 2 cards), VEN-003 Brittle Steel (Fury, 2 Energy + 1 Power), SFD-032 Disarming Rake (Calm), SFD-160 Zaun Punk (Order), OGN-056 Adaptatron (Calm, on conquer), SFD-077 Rocket Barrage (Mind) and OGN-022 Thermo Beam (Fury, kills ALL gear, yours included). CORRECTED 2026-10-26 (#473, from the run play docs/plays/2026-10-26-the-helm-costs-your-turn-four-their-two-spells-cost-two-runes-more-and-acceptable-losses-kills-it-for-two.md): the list misses cards. In Fury/Chaos: OGN-179 Acceptable Losses (Chaos, E1: '[Action] (Play on your turn or in showdowns.) Each player kills one of their gear.', so it kills the Helm when it is your only gear), SFD-135 Factory Recall (Chaos, E1: '[Action] (Play on your turn or in showdowns.) Return a gear to its owner's hand.'), OGN-180 Fading Memories (Chaos, E4 + 1 Power: 'Give a unit at a battlefield or a gear [Temporary]. (Kill it at the start of its controller's Beginning Phase, before scoring.)'), SFD-147 Downwell (Chaos, E8 + 2 Power: 'Return all units and gear to their owners' hands.') and the unit VEN-102 Ravenbloom Prefect (Chaos, E3: 'When an opponent plays a gear, you may banish me to banish it.', on the board before the Helm is played). Outside it, OGN-224 Salvage (Order, E2 + 1 Power: '[Action] (Play on your turn or in showdowns.) You may kill up to one gear. Draw 1.'). A pool-wide re-read of the 56 corpus lines matching gear with kill, return, banish or [Temporary] adds UNL-070 Turn to Dust (Mind, E2: 'Give a gear [Temporary]. (Kill it at the start of its controller's Beginning Phase, before scoring.)'), VEN-037 Tomb-Raider Barbara (Calm unit, E4: 'When you play me, if you control 7 or more runes, choose an enemy gear. If it's [Empowered], disempower it. Otherwise, kill it.', which drops the tax to 1 Energy until you pay the [Empower] again), and VEN-080 Noxian Demolitionist once its Might is 4 or more when it conquers (the line above reads it at its printed Might of 1). The list also prices its spells at printed cost, and each is cast while the Helm is on the board, so each pays the tax: Acceptable Losses and Factory Recall E2 + 1 any (two runes, one recycled); Detonate E2 + 1 Fury + 1 any (two runes, both recycled); Brittle Steel E3 + 1 Fury + 1 any; Salvage E3 + 1 Order + 1 any; Turn to Dust E3 + 1 any; Fading Memories E5 + 1 Chaos + 1 any; Rocket Barrage E5 + 1 Mind + 1 any; Thermo Beam E6 + 2 Fury + 1 any; Downwell E9 + 2 Chaos + 1 any. The units (Ravenbloom Prefect, Disarming Rake, Zaun Punk, Adaptatron, Tomb-Raider Barbara, Noxian Demolitionist) are not spells and are not taxed. In Fury/Chaos the cheapest answers are Acceptable Losses and Factory Recall, two runes each with one recycled. Acceptable Losses is the better one: Factory Recall only returns the Helm to your hand, and you can pay the 8 Energy and 2 Power again, while Acceptable Losses kills it when it is your only gear. Cast first, either lifts the tax off every spell behind it.
- It is anti-synergic with VEN-039 Crumbling Sands, which is the other cheap Calm denial card and the obvious thing to pair it with: Crumbling Sands only counters 'if an opponent has played another spell this turn', and the Helm's entire purpose is to make that second spell not happen. And against a deck that wins with units, the Helm taxes nothing at all.
- 356.3 IS A LIMIT ON WHAT THIS TAX IS WORTH, AND IT WAS UNCITED (upgrade 2026-09-12, #187 batch 7). The cost steps run in order: **356.3 "Apply cost increases"** and then **356.4 "Apply discounts"**. An increase therefore lands BEFORE every discount, so a tax is the first thing any of the opponent`s reductions eats and is worth its full face value only against an opponent who is not already overshooting. That is a real bound on a denial line and it is invisible if you price the tax alone.
- THE FREE ANSWER IS TO CAST NO SPELL - ADDED 2026-10-26 (#473, from the run play docs/plays/2026-10-26-the-helm-costs-your-turn-four-their-two-spells-cost-two-runes-more-and-acceptable-losses-kills-it-for-two.md). The Helm taxes 'Opponents' spells' and nothing else, so a turn of units and attacks pays nothing, and then the Helm has cost you your T4 for nothing: in the walk, with no spell cast, it is still a turn behind the control. The sixth notable comes close ('And against a deck that wins with units, the Helm taxes nothing at all.') but does not state it as an answer.
Steps
- Play Helm of Suppression to your base for 4 Energy + 1 Power. CORRECTED 2026-10-26 (#473, from the run play docs/plays/2026-10-26-the-helm-costs-your-turn-four-their-two-spells-cost-two-runes-more-and-acceptable-losses-kills-it-for-two.md): the Power is Calm. The printed Power symbol is the card's own domain, 135.2.e.6: 'Power of a domain corresponding to a card’s own Domain is not represented by a symbol, but appears in these rules similarly to other symbols. Its shorthand is [C].'
- Activate its [Empower] for 4 Energy + 1 Calm Power - no exhaust in the cost, so the same turn is legal if the mana is there. 441.2 makes the state permanent.
- From then on every spell an opponent plays costs 1 Energy and one Power of any domain more.
- Their free Power is 2 a turn (315.3.b), so the third spell of any turn has to recycle a rune (164.2.b) off the board into the Rune Deck (161.2.b) to be cast at all. CORRECTED 2026-10-24 (#456): not at the next Channel Phase. A recycled rune goes to the bottom of the Rune Deck (416.1, 416.1.b) and 430.1 channels from the top, so it is back on T7 at the earliest going first and T6 at the earliest going second with only the Channel Phase's two a turn (161.2.a, 315.3.b, 485.7); each two more recycled push it a turn later, a card that channels more (430.2) brings it back sooner, and the next Channel Phase gives it back only once the Rune Deck is empty. So every spell's Power takes runes off the board, not only the third's: the first two hold their board flat, which is free only once their Rune Deck is empty. The Helm's tax still lands on top of whatever they spend.
How it ends
engine only - a permanent tax of 1 Energy and 1 Power on every opponent spell; it slows their turns, it scores nothing CORRECTED 2026-10-26 (#473, from the run play docs/plays/2026-10-26-the-helm-costs-your-turn-four-their-two-spells-cost-two-runes-more-and-acceptable-losses-kills-it-for-two.md): in the walk it slowed nothing that scored. Their two taxed spells and an attack took the battlefield anyway, and the cost to you was the turn: the Helm took all of your T4, A was 9 Might short of the control's 22, and it fell. After their T4 the Helm line was 3 to 4 and the control 3 to 3.

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-06 (docs/phase0/walks/2026-09-06-denial-lens-candidates.md), issue #100 candidate 5, HELD as its own entry. The issue left the entry-or-notable question to the walk and the answer is its own entry, on brynhir-lockout-window's matcher argument. Two things the walk adds. First, the 206 trap: the tax does not widen Defy or Rebuttal, because 206 reads the PRINTED cost and its own worked example is Defy - a reader would otherwise assume the opposite. Second, the refutation list is corrected: all three cards issue #100 names as answers are unable to kill a 4-Energy gear (two are cost-capped below it, one only kills friendly gear), and the seven that actually can were found by grepping every gear-removal line in the corpus. The 2-Power free floor comes from #44 and is used here as the yardstick the tax is measured against. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt. Ban check: VEN-045 is not among the 12 [BANNED] corpus lines nor in data/legality.json. REVISED 2026-10-26 (#473, from the run play docs/plays/2026-10-26-the-helm-costs-your-turn-four-their-two-spells-cost-two-runes-more-and-acceptable-losses-kills-it-for-two.md): its Leads applied as dated notes on step 1, the first easy prerequisite, terminatesIn and the second and fifth notables, plus an ADDED notable for the free answer. Re-checked against data/corpus_flat.txt and the 2026-07-16 Core Rules (135.2.e.6, 206, 356.3); the answer list was re-read pool-wide (56 corpus lines matching gear with kill, return, banish or [Temporary]), which added Turn to Dust, Tomb-Raider Barbara and a buffed Noxian Demolitionist to the play's six. The corrections withdraw the cap at two and the 'slows their turns' claim and widen the answer list; the tax itself (1 Energy and one Power of any domain on every opponent spell, permanent once Empowered, 441.2) is unchanged and it is what the entry catalogues, so it stays verified. No unruled reading.
