Combo · ENGINE
[Hunt] pays per battlefield HELD, so the XP rate is a question of how many battlefields survive the opponent's turn
Pieces
- Herald of Spring ×3
UNL-034 · engine · calm
[Hunt] (When I conquer or hold, gain 1 XP.) When you play me, gain 2 XP.
- Navori Scout ×3
SFD-037 · payoff · calm
[Deflect] (Opponents must pay 1 Power of any domain to choose me with a spell or ability.)
Payoff
Deck
- Both cards are mono-Calm, so 103.1.b.3 admits any legend with Calm in its pair.
- Neither card is banned or restricted in either format, and neither is a Signature card.
- A deck that never SPENDS XP, if the XP is being banked for a [Level] rung: 824.1.d and 730.2. The Herald's own 2 XP is a gain and does not care.
Prerequisites
- THE RATE IS PER BATTLEFIELD, NOT PER CARD. 823.1.c.1: 'Hunt is functionally short for "When I Conquer or Hold, my controller gains X XP"'; 315.2.b.2: 'The Turn Player Holds all Battlefields they Control'; 485.4 puts Battlefield Count at 2 in a Duel. So [Hunt] pays once per battlefield you still control at your Beginning Phase - and the binding constraint is not how many Hunt bodies you drew but how many battlefields SURVIVED the opponent's turn. A second holder is worth as much as a second Hunt card.
- WHICH IS WHY THE PARTNER IS A BODY WITH NO TEXT BUT ONE KEYWORD. Navori Scout is 4 Energy for 4 Might and [Deflect], which 809.1.c prices as extra Power 'for each time they choose' it, in any Domain (809.1.c.1). It does not draw, buff or trigger; what it does is make the cheap targeted answer to your second holder cost a rainbow more, which over a turn is often the whole difference between holding two battlefields and one. 355.10.d is the hole - a programmatically selected object is not chosen and pays nothing - so a sweeper still takes it.
- THE HERALD'S JUMP IS THE BIGGEST IN THE DOMAIN AND IT IS A GAIN, NOT A THRESHOLD. 'When you play me, gain 2 XP' happens on the play and 730.1's counter simply goes up; nothing about it is a Dependent Ability, so 824.1.d has no say and spending later does not undo it. What spending DOES switch off is every [Level] rung the XP was banked for - UNL-031 Combat Experience's +3, UNL-038 Skyward Strike's stun, UNL-040 Wuju Apprentice's draw, UNL-047 Mosstomper's +1 and [Deflect] - which is the fork this catalogue has now recorded in four domains.
- AND THE ARITHMETIC IS SHORT. A Herald played on turn three is 2 XP at once and 1 more at each of your Beginning Phases while it holds; two holders reach six on the third such phase, one holder on the fifth. Adding a Mosstomper ([Hunt 2]) halves that again - mosstomper-wuju-apprentice-xp-calm-ladder is where that pair is walked.
- THE HERALD HAS TO SURVIVE TO KEEP PAYING, WHICH IS THE PART A LIST UNDER-PRICES. Its [Hunt] fires at 315.2.b.2, in YOUR Beginning Phase, so every payment is one the opponent had a whole turn to prevent - by killing the body, by taking the battlefield, or by 323.6 stripping your Control if your last body there leaves. Four Energy for a 4 Might body is not a lot of resilience; the Scout's [Deflect] is what the second battlefield is actually buying.
- WHAT IT IS NOT. Nothing here scores; [Hunt] is PAID BY a Hold and does not cause one, and 469 defines Scoring as Conquer or Hold.
Steps
- Play Herald of Spring (4 Energy + 1 Power): gain 2 XP immediately, then walk it to a battlefield.
- Play Navori Scout (4 Energy) and send it to the OTHER battlefield - 485.4 gives a Duel two, and the Scout's [Deflect] taxes the cheap answer to it by a rainbow (809.1.c).
- At your Beginning Phase, 315.2.b.2 Holds every battlefield you control and each [Hunt] body that held pays 1 XP.
- Expect a sweeper to ignore the [Deflect] entirely (355.10.d), and expect 323.6 to take a battlefield back if your last body there leaves.
- If the XP is being banked for a [Level] rung, never spend it: 824.1.d switches every rung off at once.
Per iteration
2 XP on the play and 1 more per Herald per battlefield held, with the second battlefield made cheaper to keep
How it ends
engine only - one XP per Hunt body per Beginning Phase and at most two battlefields in a Duel (485.4), three of each card by 103.2.b; nothing here scores

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-07 (issue #188). The first entry to use UNL-034 Herald of Spring or SFD-037 Navori Scout. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt. Citations opened and quoted: 103.1.b.3, 103.2.b, 315.2.b.2, 323.6, 355.10.d, 469, 485.4, 730.1, 730.2, 809.1.c, 809.1.c.1, 823.1.c.1, 824.1.d. The entry is about RATE rather than about a trigger: [Hunt] pays per battlefield held, so a near-vanilla body that makes a second battlefield survivable is worth as much as a second Hunt card - which is the honest reason to run SFD-037 rather than refusing it as vanilla. Ban check: neither card is banned or restricted; neither is a Signature card. No unruled reading.
