Combo · ENGINE
358.3.a: a prohibition does not make a card illegal to play, it makes the instruction fizzle - so a blanked spell is still a card played this turn, and Riot's example is Here to Help into a Mageseeker Warden
Pieces
- Here to Help ×3
SFD-111 · engine · body
[Hidden] (Hide now for 1 Power of any domain to react with later for 0 Energy.) [Action] (Play on your turn or in showdowns.) You may play a unit from hand to a battlefield you control, reducing its cost by 3 Energy.
- Battering Ram ×3
SFD-012 · payoff · fury
I cost 1 Energy less for each card you've played this turn, to a minimum of 1 Energy.
Payoff
Deck
- Here to Help is mono-Body and Battering Ram is mono-Fury, so the identity is Fury/Body and 103.1.b.2 needs a legend covering both. Measured over data/cards.json those are OGN-249 / OGN-300 Relentless Storm, SFD-183 / SFD-241 Purifier, UNL-183 / UNL-227 Pridestalker and VEN-141 / VEN-190 Butcher of the Sands.
- Neither is a Signature card (checked against data/cards.json), so 103.2.d.2 imposes no legend, and neither is banned or restricted in either format.
- The [Hidden] mode needs a battlefield you control with no facedown card already hidden there (811.1.b), and 485.4 puts at most two battlefields on a Duel table - so at most two hidden cards exist at once.
Prerequisites
- THE RULE, AND RIOT NAMES BOTH CARDS. 358.3.a: 'If a Game Effect prevents the performance of a game action, that effect doesn't prevent cards and abilities that instruct a player to perform that game action from being played or finalized. On resolution, that game action will be skipped as it is an impossible instruction.' Its worked example: 'A player plays Here to Help when their opponent controls a Mageseeker Warden at a battlefield. Here to Help is legal to play under these circumstances. On resolution, no unit will be played.' Rule 358 is cited by no entry and no synergy rule in this project.
- SO A PROHIBITION IS NOT A COUNTERSPELL, AND THE DIFFERENCE IS WHERE IT BITES. The card is legal at the Check Legality step (358), it is FINALIZED onto the Chain, and only the instruction is skipped at resolution under 055. Everything that keys on the card having been played still happens - which is the constructive half and is why this is an entry rather than a note.
- 419.4.b IS THE PARAGRAPH THAT CASHES IT: 'Non-triggered abilities that check cards being played do so by means of referencing whether said cards have been Finalized', with its own worked example naming Battering Ram - 'A player plays a spell, which is countered by Defy. If that player plays Battering Ram and has played no other cards that turn, it will cost [4] Energy.' A COUNTERED spell still counts, so a merely fizzled one certainly does. Same paragraph, same card, from the other direction.
- AND THE FIZZLED CARD IS FREE. 811.1.b plays a hidden card 'ignoring its base cost', so Here to Help from face down costs 0 Energy. Into a Mageseeker Warden it does nothing at all - and still takes Battering Ram from 5 Energy to 4 (356.6 floors nothing here; the card's own 'to a minimum of :rb_energy_1:' is the floor). Two zero-cost cards played this turn and the Ram is 3.
- 419.4.a IS THE OTHER HALF AND IT CUTS THE OTHER WAY. 'Any such triggered abilities trigger when the act of playing the card has been completed by the resolution of the card', and 419.4.a.1 adds that a COUNTERED card fires no play trigger at all. So a 'when you play a spell' payoff does NOT fire off a countered card, while [Legion] and every 'cards you've played this turn' count does. State the split: TRIGGERS need resolution, non-triggered CHECKS need only finalization.
- THE FIZZLE IS NOT THE PLAN, IT IS THE FLOOR. In the ordinary case Here to Help does its job - a unit from hand to a battlefield you control at [Action] speed for 3 Energy less, which 464.2.c.3.a puts into an opened combat. What 358.3.a buys is that the card is never a brick: against the pool's biggest denial card it still pays Battering Ram, so the slot has no dead matchup.
- AND THE WARDEN NEVER STOPS THE HIDE. 811.1.c.1 - 'Hide is not a subset of Play' - so the Warden's 'opponents can only play units to their base' cannot prevent hiding a card face down, and the whole [Hidden] package keeps functioning as a resource even while its payloads are blanked. That is the same asymmetry #100 recorded for the Warden and the Saboteur, reached from the legality step instead.
Steps
- Hide SFD-111 Here to Help face down at a battlefield you control for one rainbow (811.1.b; one facedown per battlefield, so at most two in a Duel under 485.4).
- From the following turn the hidden card has [Reaction] and can be played 'ignoring its base cost' - 0 Energy (811.1.b).
- In the ordinary case, play it and put a unit from hand onto a battlefield you control for 3 Energy less; 464.2.c.3.a gives that body its designation at the next Cleanup if a combat is open there.
- Against an opponent holding OGN-070 Mageseeker Warden at a battlefield, play it anyway. 358 finds it legal, it is finalized onto the Chain, and 358.3.a skips the instruction at resolution: no unit is played.
- Either way, 419.4.b has the card counted as played this turn by every non-triggered check that reads finalization.
- Play SFD-012 Battering Ram. It costs 1 Energy less for each card played this turn, floored by its own text at 1 Energy - two free hidden plays take it from 5 to 3.
- Do not expect a 'when you play a spell' trigger from a countered card: 419.4.a.1 says those do not fire. Only the non-triggered counts survive.
Per iteration
a 0-Energy card that counts toward every 'cards played this turn' check whether or not its instruction can be performed
How it ends
engine only - nothing here scores. Bounded by 103.2.b's three copies, by 811.1.b's one facedown per battlefield and by Battering Ram's own 1-Energy floor

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-07 (issue #187, uncited-rules-blocks slice: 349-358 Playing Cards, specifically 358 Check Legality). Rule 358 is cited by no entry and no synergy rule in this project, and its worked example names two pool cards - SFD-111 Here to Help and OGN-070 Mageseeker Warden - by name. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt. Citations opened: 055, 103.1.b.2, 103.2.b, 103.2.d.2, 356.6, 358, 358.3, 358.3.a, 419.4.a, 419.4.a.1, 419.4.b, 464.2.c.3.a, 485.4, 811.1.b, 811.1.c.1. The split worth carrying: a TRIGGER needs the card to resolve (419.4.a, 419.4.a.1 - a countered card fires no play trigger), a non-triggered CHECK needs only finalization (419.4.b). Distinct from here-to-help-mountain-drake-showdown-unit and from battering-ram-undying-legion-cards-played, neither of which cites 358 or 419.4.b. Trap check: the entry states plainly that the fizzle is the floor and not the plan; the hidden play is free only from the turn after the hide (811.1.b); 811.1.c.1 keeps the hide itself legal under the Warden; no unruled reading.
