Payoff
Deck
- Calm + Mind: Wind Wall is mono-Calm and Hextech Anomaly mono-Mind (103.1.b.3), so the legend must hold both and the pool prints exactly four names — OGN-255 Nine-Tailed Fox, SFD-189 Fire Below the Mountain, UNL-189 Bashful Bloom and VEN-145 Curator of the Sands (103.1.b.2).
- Neither card is banned or restricted in either format, and neither is a Signature card.
- The Anomaly must be READY when you want it on the opponent's turn, so it cannot also have been used on yours — 415.3.a readies it only in your own Awakening Phase.
Prerequisites
- THE PROBLEM THE ENTRY SOLVES, IN THREE PARAGRAPHS. 415.3.a: 'A player Readies all non-spell Game Objects they Control during the Awakening Phase on their turn' — so a rune you exhausted on your own turn is dead for the whole of the opponent's. 164.2.a is the exhaust-for-Energy ability; 164.2.b is 'Recycle this: [Reaction] — [Add] one Power', which carries NO exhaust, so an already-exhausted rune can still pay POWER on their turn. And 167: 'Every player's Rune Pool empties at the start of each player's Main Phase and the end of each player's turn', so nothing can be banked across the gap. The net effect is that after a turn where you tapped out, you have Power available on the opponent's turn and no Energy at all — and most counters cost both.
- THE ANOMALY IS THE CONVERSION, AND 429.3 IS WHY IT ARRIVES IN TIME. 'Pay any amount of :rb_rune_rainbow: to [Add] that much Energy', at Reaction speed and with no cap per activation. 429.3: 'Activated abilities that Add resources and have the Reaction tag can be activated at any time that spells or abilities require resources be paid', with the worked example spelling out that this may be done inside the Pay Costs step. 429.2 makes it resolve as soon as it is finalized and 429.2.a keeps priority from passing, so the opponent cannot respond to the conversion itself.
- ARITHMETIC WITH THE QUANTITIES DECLARED. Wind Wall is 3 Energy + 2 Power. On the opponent's turn with every rune already exhausted: recycle 5 runes for 5 Power (164.2.b), spend 2 on Wind Wall's Power cost, feed 3 into the Anomaly for 3 Energy, and cast it. Five runes for one hard counter. 161.2.b sends each recycled rune to the Rune Deck rather than the Main Deck, and 315.3.b channels 2 back every Channel Phase, so the real price is roughly two and a half turns of ramp — this is a card you hold up on a turn that matters, not every turn. CORRECTED 2026-10-24 (#456): not at the next Channel Phase. 416.1 puts a recycled rune on the bottom of the Rune Deck (416.1.b) and 430.1 channels from the top, so 315.3.b's two a turn are the runes above it, which the board gets whether or not anything was recycled. With only those two a turn (161.2.a, 315.3.b, 485.7), a rune recycled on any of T1 to T6 is back on T7 going first; going second the first one recycled by T5 is back on T6 and the second on T7; each two more recycled push it a turn later, and a card that channels more (430.2) brings it back sooner. Only once the Rune Deck is empty (all twelve out, T6 at the earliest from either seat) does the next Channel Phase give a recycled rune back; before that a recycle is a rune short on every turn until the deck runs dry, and two recycled every turn hold the board flat at two going first. So five runes recycled by T6 going first are back on T7, T7, T8, T8 and T9, and twelve runes land on T9 instead of T6: about three turns of ramp, and five short on every turn through T6, three on T7 and one on T8. The conclusion, a card held up on a turn that matters, stands; status unchanged.
- AND IT IS THE GENERAL FIX, NOT A ONE-CARD TRICK. The project has two other answers to the same problem — OGS-017 Dark Child handing runes back at 1 Energy each, and a Gold token under Renata Glasc, Industrialist — and both give you a fixed amount. The Anomaly converts whatever Power you can raise, at a 1:1 rate, into Energy for anything: a [Reaction] unit, an [Ambush] body, an [Empower] cost paid on their turn. Wind Wall is the sharpest use, not the only one.
- WHAT THE COUNTER SUITE COSTS AND WHY WIND WALL IS THE ONE PRICED HERE. Calm prints five counters and every one of them needs Energy on a turn you have none: OGN-045 Defy (E1 + 1 Power, and only against a spell costing no more than 4 Energy and 1 Power), VEN-039 Crumbling Sands (E1 + 1 Power, only if the opponent has already played another spell this turn), SFD-045 Not So Fast (E2 + 1 Power, only against something that chooses a friendly unit or gear), UNL-190 Lilting Lullaby (Calm/Mind, E2 + 2 Power) and OGN-064 Wind Wall (E3 + 2 Power, unconditional). The Anomaly makes the unconditional one castable, which is the whole point of paying for the conversion.
- THE ANOMALY'S OWN EXHAUST IS THE REAL CAP. One conversion per round trip: used on the opponent's turn it is exhausted until your Awaken, and used on your own turn it is not there when they act. It is also a 3 Energy + 1 Mind Power gear that does nothing on the board, so it is a slot you pay for.
Steps
- Play Hextech Anomaly (3 Energy + 1 Mind Power) on an early turn and leave it READY at the end of yours.
- Take your turn normally — the runes you exhaust for Energy are dead until your next Awaken (415.3.a), and 167 empties whatever is left in the pool at end of turn.
- On the opponent's turn, when the spell you want to answer goes on the Chain, begin playing Wind Wall.
- In the Pay Costs step (429.3), recycle runes for Power (164.2.b — no exhaust needed) and exhaust the Anomaly, paying 3 of that Power into it to Add 3 Energy.
- 429.2 resolves the Add immediately and 429.2.a keeps priority from passing, so the Energy is there.
- Pay Wind Wall's 3 Energy + 2 Power and counter the spell. 425.1.c means the opponent gets nothing back.
Per iteration
one hard counter cast on the opponent's turn for five recycled runes, on a turn you had already tapped out
How it ends
engine only — one conversion per round trip, capped by the Anomaly's own exhaust and by the Rune Deck (161.2.a's twelve, 315.3.b's two a turn); three Wind Walls by 103.2.b, and nothing here scores

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-07 (issue #174, the Calm/Mind lane). SFD-083 Hextech Anomaly and OGN-064 Wind Wall were both in NO entry before this. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt. Citations opened: 103.1.b.2, 103.1.b.3, 103.2.b, 103.2.d.2, 161.2.a, 161.2.b, 164.2.a, 164.2.b, 167, 315.3.b, 415.3.a, 425.1.c, 429.2, 429.2.a, 429.3. The Anomaly is the general form of a problem the project has only ever solved with two specific cards (Dark Child's rune readies, and a Gold token under Renata Glasc, Industrialist): it converts whatever Power you can still raise on the opponent's turn into Energy at 1:1, with no cap per activation, and 429.3 lets it happen inside the Pay Costs step. Ban check: neither card is banned or restricted. Trap check: the Anomaly's own exhaust caps it at one conversion per round trip and it must be saved for the opponent's turn; the five recycled runes are a real cost, priced against 161.2.a's twelve and 315.3.b's two a turn; the other four Calm counters are listed with their conditions so the choice of Wind Wall is argued rather than assumed; no unruled reading.
