Prerequisites

Steps

  1. Play Hwei, Brooding Painter (5 Energy + 1 Power). He enters exhausted (143.4).
  2. Next Awaken readies him (315.1.b). Standard-Move him base to battlefield: the cost is his own exhaust and nothing else (144.2).
  3. His trigger: draw 1, then discard 1. Discard a spell for another card, or a gear to ready 2 runes (+2 Energy), or a unit for +3 Might.
  4. For more moves in the same turn, play Sprite Fountain (2 Energy + 1 Power) for a ready [Temporary] Sprite at your base.
  5. Play Smoke and Mirrors (2 Energy): choose Hwei and the Sprite, at different locations. They swap, Hwei's trigger fires again, and the spell draws 1 to replace itself.
  6. Up to three swaps a turn, alternating Hwei between base and battlefield.

Per iteration

per move: +1 card (discard a spell) or +2 Energy (discard a gear) or +3 Might; the first move each turn costs nothing, each further one costs 2 Energy and a Smoke and Mirrors that replaces itself

How it ends

engine only — one free move a turn forever, plus at most three swaps in any single turn; nothing in mono-Mind readies Hwei repeatably

How this entry was audited

REFUTE = a refutation pass, with its date and verdict · WOUNDED = the pass found a flaw and the entry was rewritten · BUDGETED = the pass checked the recycle-and-draw ledger · lens = the hunt that proposed it.

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-06 (docs/phase0/walks/2026-09-06-draw-lens-candidates.md), issue #59 candidate 6, which the hunt filed as CONDITIONAL on somebody finding the mover. UNL-080 and UNL-078 appeared in no entry with Hwei before this; UNL-083 is already lillia-smoke-mirrors-sprite-relay's, and the overlap is declared in the notables. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt; 143.4, 144.2, 144.4, 164.2.a, 315.1.b, 415.1, 420.1, 420.2.a, 446.1, 456.1, 811.1.b, 811.1.d.2 and 816.1.b opened in the Core Rules. Ban check: none of the three carries a [BANNED marker. THE WALK'S ADDITION over the hunt: the hunt looked for a mover and missed the free one — the Standard Move, whose entire cost 144.2 makes the unit's own exhaust, readied every Awaken by 315.1.b. It also records the pricing inconsistency between two existing entries over 811.1.d.2 rather than silently picking a side. Trap check: no attack designation; no [Repeat]; the [Temporary] Sprites never Hold and the entry claims none (816.1.b); a swap is a Move and not a Recall (446.1, 456.1); no Gold; no battlefield of its own. Depends on no unruled reading. 811.1.d.2 CORRECTED 2026-09-06 (docs/phase0/walks/2026-09-06-issue89-tournament-corpus.md, issue #89's extra task). This entry recorded the inconsistency between tideturner-mega-mech-swap and lillia-smoke-mirrors-sprite-relay and declined to pick a side, which was the right instinct and the wrong conclusion: 811.1.d.2.a works Smoke and Mirrors by name and settles it per target. Its own phrasing — that the exception 'applies on its face, since the spell is DEFINED by choosing units at different locations' — was also too broad: only the SECOND target escapes, the first must be at the hiding battlefield. All three entries now state the same rule. The declared prices are unchanged; no class and no quantity moved.
