[Weaponmaster] DISCOUNTS an Equip cost by one rainbow, [Quick-Draw] never DETERMINES one at all - so a granted Quick-Draw is the pool's only way to delete the non-resource half of an Equip cost, and Last Rites is the card that has one
Pieces
- Jax, Unmatched ×3
SFD-054 · enabler · calm
[Deflect] (Opponents must pay 1 Power of any domain to choose me with a spell or ability.) Your Equipment everywhere have [Quick-Draw]. (Each gains [Reaction]. When you play it, attach it to a unit you control.)
- Last Rites ×3
SFD-150 · payoff · chaos
[Equip] — 1 Chaos Power, Recycle 2 cards from your trash (Pay the cost: Attach this to a unit you control.)
When I conquer or hold, you may play a unit from your trash. (You still pay its costs.)
Payoff
Deck
- SFD-054 Jax, Unmatched is mono-Calm and SFD-150 Last Rites is mono-Chaos (both checked against data/cards.json), so 103.1.b needs a legend carrying BOTH domains. Measured over data/cards.json there are exactly three such names: Unforgiven (OGN-259 / OGN-305), Blade Dancer (SFD-195 / SFD-246) and Gloomist (UNL-193 / UNL-232).
- Neither card is a Signature card (data/cards.json, signature=false on both), so 103.2.d.2 imposes no legend beyond those three, and neither appears in data/legality.json.
- The line wants a trash to reanimate from, so it wants the Chaos discard package - but nothing here forces one: Last Rites' own [Effect] is the only trash reader in the two cards.
Prerequisites
- THE TWO FREE-ATTACH KEYWORDS ARE NOT THE SAME TOOL AND THE DIFFERENCE IS IN THEIR SHORTHANDS. 821.1.c makes [Weaponmaster] short for 'Pay the cost of its Equip ability, reduced by [A], to attach it to this unit.' (the tail of 821.1.c, quoted from its second sentence on) - it ACTIVATES the Equip ability and DISCOUNTS its cost by one rainbow. 819.1.d makes [Quick-Draw] short for '“[Reaction]” and “When you play this, attach it to a Unit you control.”' - a triggered attach on the play, in which no Equip ability is activated and no Equip cost is ever determined. A discount can only reduce a resource; a cost that is never determined is not paid at all.
- AND LAST RITES IS THE CARD WHERE THAT DIFFERENCE IS THE WHOLE CARD. Its [Equip] is ':rb_rune_chaos:, Recycle 2 cards from your trash' - a resource half and a NON-RESOURCE half. [Weaponmaster]'s rainbow reaches the rune and can never reach the recycle, which is why this project already records Last Rites as self-limiting and un-freeable by that keyword. A granted [Quick-Draw] frees both halves at once, and the recycle is the half worth more: 416.1 puts recycled cards on the bottom of the deck, so paying it feeds the trash back into the library - the exact resource the Equipment's own [Effect] ('When I conquer or hold, you may play a unit from your trash') is trying to spend. Paying the cost damages the payoff; deleting it does not.
- 819.2 IS THE CAP AND IT IS PRINTED. 'Multiple instances of Quick-Draw do not trigger separately and have no effect beyond the first.' So Jax's grant is worth exactly ZERO on the Equipment that already print the keyword. Measured 2026-09-09 over data/corpus_flat.txt: 40 Equipment-tagged printings, of which FOUR print [Quick-Draw] - SFD-022 Long Sword, SFD-056 Sterak's Gage, SFD-064 Cloth Armor, SFD-186 Spinning Axe. Build the list from the other thirty-six or Jax is a 5-Energy blank.
- 819.1.a IS WHY THE GRANT IS WELL FORMED HERE: 'Quick-Draw is present on Gear with Equip abilities.' Last Rites has one. And 819.1.b - 'Cards with Quick-Draw have Reaction inherently' - is the second half of the gift: the Equipment becomes a [Reaction] card, so 813.1.c.1 lets it be played in any Closed State on either player's turn, and it arrives attached. 819.3 makes Quick-Draw itself a referenceable characteristic, though no card in the pool reads it.
- THE GRANT REACHES YOUR HAND BECAUSE JAX SAYS 'EVERYWHERE', AND 801.3.a.3 IS WHY IT DOES NOT EXPIRE. 'If an effect that grants a Keyword does not specify a duration, the duration is as long as that Game Object remains on the Board or in its current Non-Board Zone.' Jax names no duration, so every Equipment you hold keeps the keyword until it is played - and a granted keyword on a card in hand is exactly what a play-trigger needs.
- WHAT IT IS NOT: free damage prevention for Jax himself. 809.1.c prices his [Deflect] as an additional cost the OPPONENT pays per choice, which they may simply pay; it is a tax, not the prohibition that SFD-105 Ruin Runner prints. And killing Jax does not detach anything - 718.5.b keeps an attached card a legal choice, but the Equipment stays where it is; what the opponent buys by removing him is the price of the NEXT attach, back to a Chaos rune plus two recycles.
- CROSS-REFERENCES, so the family is readable as one: aphelios-jax-quickdraw-attach and ornns-forge-jax-free-equipment are the other two Jax lines and both spend the grant on the PLAY cost or on a 'when you attach' trigger; azir-ascendant-steraks-gage-equipped-state-survives-inactive, walked in this same batch, is what the resulting Equipped STATE is then readable by; and last-rites-sentinel-trash-holds, last-rites-mill-reanimate, last-rites-stack-arena-reanimator and last-rites-lunar-boon-trash-recursion are the four entries that pay the Equip cost the hard way.
Steps
- Play SFD-054 Jax, Unmatched (5 Energy + 1 Power). From that moment 'Your Equipment everywhere have [Quick-Draw]', which by 801.3.a.3 lasts as long as each card stays where it is, your hand included.
- Play SFD-150 Last Rites for its printed 3 Energy. 819.1.b has given it [Reaction], so this can happen in any Closed State on either player's turn (813.1.c.1) - in response to removal, or inside a Showdown.
- 819.1.d's granted trigger attaches it to a unit you control as it is played. No Equip ability is activated (818.1), so neither the Chaos rune nor the 'Recycle 2 cards from your trash' is ever paid, and your trash is intact.
- The carrier is now +2 Might (137.3, 718.4) and carries the appended [Effect] (718.3): 'When I conquer or hold, you may play a unit from your trash.'
- Conquer or Hold with that body. 383.4.c.1 / 383.4.d.1 put the trigger on the Chain; play a unit from your trash, paying its costs. Repeat every turn the carrier scores.
- If the opponent kills the carrier, 719.5 detaches Last Rites and 457.1 recalls it to base at the next Cleanup, where its printed text is Active again - so a re-attach costs the printed Equip cost unless you replay it under Jax, which you cannot, because it is already on the board rather than in a zone you can play it from.
Per iteration
one unit replayed from the trash per Conquer or Hold of the carrier, with the Equipment's own Equip cost - one Chaos rune and two recycles - deleted rather than discounted
How it ends
engine only - nothing here scores by itself; the ceiling is the carrier's scoring events, which 470 caps at one Score per battlefield per turn and 485.4 caps at two battlefields in a Duel, and each replayed unit still pays its own costs

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-09 (issue #191, uncited sub-rules 500-829, batch 4). Anchors uncited before this entry: 819.1.a, 819.1.b, 819.3 and 801.3.a.3 (819.1.c and 819.1.d were already cited). The finding is a distinction this catalogue had been treating as one thing: both keywords are described in these walk documents as 'a free attach', and they are not - 821.1.c pays a DISCOUNTED Equip cost while 819.1.d pays NONE, which is invisible until an Equip cost has a non-resource half. Exactly one does: SFD-150 Last Rites. Companion measurement, members named: 40 Equipment printings, four with the keyword printed (SFD-022, SFD-056, SFD-064, SFD-186), so 819.2 makes Jax's grant worth nothing on those four.
