Kraken Hunter paid in buffs — the pool's only Power discount, with Fae Dragon behind it
Pieces
- Fae Dragon ×1
SFD-101 · engine · body
When you play me, buff up to four friendly units. (Give each a +1 Might buff if it doesn't have one.) When you spend a buff, play a Gold gear token exhausted.
- Kraken Hunter ×1
OGN-150 · payoff · body
[Accelerate] (You may pay 1 Energy + 1 Body Power as an additional cost to have me enter ready.) [Assault] (+1 Might while I'm an attacker.) As you play me, you may spend any number of buffs as an additional cost. Reduce my cost by 1 Body Power for each buff you spend.
Payoff
Deck
- Legend domains cover Body — both cards are mono-Body, so any legend with Body runs it.
Prerequisites
- Why a Power discount is worth more than an Energy discount: 164.2.b makes 'Recycle this: [Reaction] — Add [C]' the only way a rune produces Power, and 161.2.b with 416.1.b sends that rune to the Rune Deck for good. Two Power saved is two runes that stay on the board making 1 Energy each every turn (164.2.a). CORRECTED 2026-10-24 (#452): not for good. 416.1.b: 'Runes are Recycled to the Rune Deck.' 430.1 channels it again when the deck reaches it, so a recycled rune is off the board on every turn until the Rune Deck runs dry, which once a rune is recycled is T7 at the earliest going first and T6 at the earliest going second with only the Channel Phase's two a turn (161.2.a, 315.3.b, 485.7); each two more runes recycled push it a turn later, and a card that channels more (430.2) brings it back sooner. So the two saved runes make 1 Energy each every turn until then.
- 702.3 caps a unit at one buff, so 'any number of buffs' means in practice 'as many buffs as you have buffed units' — unless the bank is OGN-078 Lee Sin (see lee-sin-buff-bank).
- The Golds enter exhausted by Fae Dragon's own text and are NOT [Temporary] (187.5), so they survive to your next Awaken and ready there. Kill them during the Main Phase: 167 empties the Rune Pool at the Main Phase start and 167.1 loses anything unspent.
- With SFD-171 Renata Glasc, Industrialist the Golds enter ready and are immediate Power (R25 = A), but that moves the line to Body+Order and overlaps the verified fae-dragon-wallop-industrialist.
- [Accelerate] (1 Energy + 1 Body Power) is what answers 143.4 for Kraken Hunter himself; without paying it he enters exhausted and cannot Standard Move.
- Board requirement the entry omitted: spending two buffs needs TWO BUFFED UNITS, because 702.3 caps a unit at one buff. Fae Dragon can buff itself, so Fae Dragon plus one other friendly unit is the minimum board for the declared 2-buff line.
- No timing sleight of hand: the Golds come from a trigger that resolves after Kraken Hunter's cost is paid, so they cannot help pay for him.
- 745.2 IS WHY AN UNQUALIFIED "SPEND A BUFF" CAN ONLY TAKE ONE OFF YOUR OWN BOARD, AND THE 741-749 BLOCK WAS CITED BY NOTHING (upgrade 2026-09-12, #191 batch 26 - diagnosed five days earlier by #187 batch 2 and never applied). The cards that print this cost say *"spend a buff"* with NO owner stated, and none of them has ever had to, because the rules say it: **745.2** - *"In order to spend a Counter, the spending player must control the Game Object the Counter is placed on."* It is the general form of the 702.2.b.2 this project cites fourteen times, and its neighbours finish the picture: **749** (*"Counters do not have a controller"*) and **748** (*"Game Objects that change zones to a non-board zone lose all of their Counters"*), which is the real rule behind buff recovery rather than the 702.x usually cited. Measured consequence from the same walk: a change of CONTROL is not a zone change, so **a buff survives a theft and becomes the thief`s to spend** - the exact complement of 718.5.f, under which an Equipment`s Control does NOT follow its carrier while a buff`s spendability DOES.
Steps
- Play Fae Dragon: buff up to four friendly units.
- Play Kraken Hunter spending 2 of those buffs as an additional cost: his Power cost drops from 2 Body Power to zero, so he lands for 3 Energy.
- Each buff spent fires Fae Dragon: 2 Gold gear tokens, entering exhausted.
- They ready in your next Awaken; kill them in the Main Phase for 1 Power each.
How it ends
engine — up to 2 Power of discount and one Gold per buff spent, bounded by how many buffed units you have (702.3) and by Fae Dragon staying on the board

How this entry was audited
REFUTE = a refutation pass, with its date and verdict · WOUNDED = the pass found a flaw and the entry was rewritten · BUDGETED = the pass checked the recycle-and-draw ledger · lens = the hunt that proposed it.
HAND-WALKED 2026-09-04 (docs/phase0/walks/2026-09-04-nine-domain-lens-candidates.md), issue #29. Both texts verified verbatim against data/corpus_flat.txt on 2026-09-04. OGN-150 is the only buff-paid POWER discount in the pool; every other spend-a-buff payoff trades for a ready, a Gold, a rune or Might. Trap check: the Golds are not [Temporary]; no attack trigger; the entry is explicit that the discount does not recycle any rune of yours (it prevents recycles, which is the whole point); Energy and Power are spent in the Main Phase, so 167 does not bite. WALK: holds as written. The declared 2-buff line checks out exactly — P2 to zero, two Fae Dragon triggers, two Gold — and the walk added the board requirement it omitted (two buffed units, since 702.3 caps a unit at one). Confirmed as the only buff-paid POWER discount in the pool; every other spend-a-buff payoff trades for a ready, a Gold, a rune or Might.
