Last Rites doubled on the Hold — two plays out of the trash every Beginning Phase
Pieces
- Last Rites ×1
SFD-150 · payoff · chaos
[Equip] — 1 Chaos Power, Recycle 2 cards from your trash (Pay the cost: Attach this to a unit you control.)
When I conquer or hold, you may play a unit from your trash. (You still pay its costs.)
- Blue Sentinel ×1
UNL-087 · engine · mind
[Shield 2] (+2 Might while I'm a defender.) Your hold effects for holding here trigger an additional time. When I hold, [Add] 1 Power of any domain at the start of your next Main Phase. (Abilities that add resources can't be reacted to.)
Payoff
Deck
- Mind + Chaos: OGN-263 Swift Scout, SFD-199 Prodigal Explorer, UNL-197 Scorn of the Moon and VEN-151 Soul's Reflection all hold it (103.1.b.2).
- Units in your trash to play, and the Blue Sentinel standing at a battlefield you hold — it is both the multiplier and the carrier, so the line needs no third card.
Prerequisites
- THE CORRECTION FIRST, BECAUSE THE LEAD THAT PRODUCED THIS ENTRY OVERSTATED IT. Last Rites does NOT give free bodies: its own reminder text is '(You still pay its costs.)' What the Sentinel doubles is the PERMISSION, not the price — 1 + K plays out of the trash per Hold, each at the unit's full Energy and Power. The gain is card advantage, not tempo.
- Where the resources come from, and it is not free. 167 empties your Rune Pool at the end of your own turn, so at the Scoring Step your pool is empty. 315.1.b has readied your runes in the Awaken Phase, and 164.2.a is a [Reaction], so you tap them inside the Closed State the Hold trigger opens (312.2.c gives priority there). That Energy would have been available in your Main Phase anyway — 316.3 has not run yet — so this spends the turn's Energy early rather than conjuring any.
- The reanimated unit lands where you want it. 355.2.a's default is 'the controller's Base or a Battlefield the controller controls', so a unit played from the trash may go straight to the battlefield you are holding — reanimation has none of the walk-to-the-battlefield bottleneck #48 measured for tokens.
- The [Equip] cost is the real price and it is self-limiting: '1 Chaos, Recycle 2 cards from your trash'. 416.6 lets you choose which two, but they leave the trash you are about to reanimate from, so attaching Last Rites costs two of the targets it exists to fetch. [Weaponmaster] cannot make it free either — the cost is a rune AND an action, not a single rune, so 'for 1 rainbow less' removes only the Chaos.
- It also fires on a Conquer, which is why last-rites-stack-arena-reanimator pairs it with OGN-286 Reckoner's Arena instead: the Arena activates conquer effects on a Hold, so that line reaches the same doubling from the other direction and in a different identity. This one needs no battlefield of yours at all, so nothing here is the 1-in-3 draw 485.5 imposes.
- K can be raised: a second Blue Sentinel makes it three plays a Hold for E4 + 1 Mind Power. Nothing in this line caps K the way VEN-138 Shen's 'exactly one other unit' does.
- Nothing here scores. The bodies it returns are what score, and the entry claims no more than that.
- THE CARRIER IS THE SENTINEL, AND A SECOND BODY IS AN OPTION RATHER THAN A REQUIREMENT — the first version of this entry had it the other way round. Last Rites' [Equip] attaches it to any unit you control (818.1.b), and the Blue Sentinel is a unit standing at the battlefield being held, so two cards are the whole line. Putting it on a SEPARATE body is worth considering for the reason veteran-poro-weaponmaster-trinity-sentinel-hold spells out: on one body, a single removal spell takes the multiplier and the payoff together. That is a deckbuilding choice, not a cost, and it does not belong in uses[].
Steps
- Get the Blue Sentinel to a battlefield you control and fill your trash by ordinary play.
- Attach Last Rites to the Sentinel itself: pay 1 Chaos Power and recycle 2 cards from your trash (416.6 — you choose which). 818.1.b attaches it to a unit you control, and the Sentinel is one.
- Beginning Phase, Scoring Step (315.2.b.2): you Hold. 718.3 has appended Last Rites' effect to its carrier, so 'When I conquer or hold, you may play a unit from your trash' is a Hold Ability of a Unit (383.4.d.2.a).
- The Sentinel's own text makes every hold effect for holding here fire 1 + 1 = 2 times, including the one it is now carrying. In the Closed State those triggers open (312.2.c), tap runes readied at Awaken (164.2.a is a [Reaction]) to pay each reanimated unit's full cost.
- Play the units to the battlefield you are holding (355.2.a). Repeat every turn for as long as the trash holds targets.
How it ends
engine only — 1 + K plays out of your trash every Hold, each at the unit's full cost, so card advantage rather than tempo. Nothing here scores.

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-06 (docs/phase0/walks/2026-09-06-finisher-feeders.md §15), issue #161, from the lead handed over after the BURST sweep. Card set checked against the current data/combos.json first (SFD-150 + UNL-087: no exact match; the two catalogued Last Rites entries pair it with the Arena and with Lunar Boon). Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt. Citations opened: 103.1.b.2, 164.2.a, 167, 312.2.c, 315.1.b, 315.2.b.2, 316.3, 355.2.a, 383.4.d.2.a, 416.6, 485.5, 718.3, 818.1. Stands on R1 = A with stacking. The entry opens by CORRECTING the lead it came from: '(You still pay its costs.)' is printed on the card, so the Sentinel doubles a permission and not a price — these are not free bodies. CORRECTED 2026-09-06 (#161 cross-audit of my own entries, run at the bar applied to the #160 walk): the original steps read 'Get a Blue Sentinel and a second unit ... Attach Last Rites to the second unit' and the easy line demanded 'a unit at the held battlefield to carry Last Rites', while uses[] held only the gear and the Sentinel. That is the same uses[]-versus-prose disagreement issue #165 reported in shen-kinkou-svellsongur-hold, inverted: there a REQUIRED card was missing from uses[], here an OPTIONAL one was written as required. The Sentinel carries it (818.1.b), so the two-card line is correct and the separate carrier is now a notable. Trap check: a Hold needs no Attacker designation; no [Repeat]; no [Temporary]; the reanimated units are CARDS, so 185 / 186.1 never arise — and a token in the trash is exactly what those paragraphs forbid, which is why the trash must be filled with real cards; no recall; the Energy is walked against 167 and 316.3 rather than assumed.
