Exhausting a friendly unit costs nothing on the opponent's turn, because 144.1.b forbids the move and combat never reads the state
Pieces
- Meditation ×3
OGN-048 · payoff · calm
[Reaction] (Play any time, even before spells and abilities resolve.) As an additional cost to play this, you may exhaust a friendly unit. If you do, draw 2. Otherwise, draw 1.
- Playful Phantom ×3 OGN-049 · engine · calm
Payoff
Deck
- Both cards are mono-Calm, so 103.1.b.3 admits any legend with Calm in its pair.
- Neither card is banned or restricted in either format, and neither is a Signature card.
- A READY friendly unit when the spell is played - exhausting requires one, and an already-exhausted body cannot pay.
Prerequisites
- THE ADDITIONAL COST IS FREE ON THE OPPONENT'S TURN, AND THREE PARAGRAPHS SAY WHY. 144.1.b forbids the Standard Move outside your own Main Phase, so a ready body has nothing to spend its readiness on during their turn. Combat does not read the state either: neither 464.2.c.3, which hands out the designations, nor 465.2.b, which assigns damage, filters by exhaustion - an exhausted defender fights at its full Might. And 415.3.a readies it again in your own Awakening. So on their turn the exhaust is a cost you pay with nothing, and Meditation is a flat Draw 2 for 2 Energy at [Reaction] speed (813.1.c.1).
- ON YOUR OWN TURN IT IS NOT FREE, WHICH IS THE OTHER HALF. 144.2 makes exhausting the unit the Cost of a Standard Move and 420.3.a repeats it, so a body you tap for Meditation is a body that does not walk this turn. The rule is simple: cast it on their turn, or on yours only after every move you meant to make.
- 203.3 NEVER BITES, BECAUSE THE COST IS OPTIONAL. 'If the game action associated with a Cost is impossible ... they cannot pay the Cost and they will not execute the linked Effect' - but the card reads 'you MAY exhaust a friendly unit ... Otherwise, draw 1', so an empty board makes it a 2-Energy cantrip rather than an uncastable card. Contrast SFD-044 Legion Quartermaster in this same lane, whose additional cost has no 'may' and whose card is therefore uncastable with no gear out.
- AND A VANILLA BODY IS THE PERFECT FUEL, WHICH TURNS A BLANK CARD INTO A USE. OGN-049 Playful Phantom has no rules text at all - swept, it is one of the very few printed blanks in the domain - so its exhaust has no opportunity cost beyond the Standard Move it was not going to make on the opponent's turn anyway. A 5 Might body that also converts one card into two every time you hold Meditation up is doing more than its stat line.
- THE RATE, WITH THE QUANTITIES DECLARED. 2 Energy for two cards, three times a game (103.2.b), on any turn where a friendly unit is ready - which is every opponent's turn on which your board survived. Against the alternative of casting it on your own turn, the price is one Standard Move.
- WHAT IT IS NOT. Nothing here scores; 469 defines Scoring as Conquer or Hold. And Meditation draws, so 431.1.a applies with an empty deck - two cards is two chances to Burn Out.
Steps
- Keep a ready body on the board at the end of your turn - a Playful Phantom that has already reached its battlefield is ideal.
- On the opponent's turn, in any Closed State, play Meditation (2 Energy) under its [Reaction] permission (813.1.c.1).
- Pay the optional additional cost by exhausting that body: 144.1.b means it had no legal move to make anyway, and neither 464.2.c.3 nor 465.2.b cares about the state in combat.
- Draw 2. 415.3.a readies the body again at your own Awakening.
- On your own turn, only tap a unit you have already finished moving - 144.2 makes the exhaust the Standard Move's cost.
Per iteration
two cards for 2 Energy on any opponent's turn, at no cost beyond a Standard Move that was illegal anyway
How it ends
engine only - three Meditations by 103.2.b; nothing here scores, and with an empty deck the second card is a Burn Out (431.1.a)

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-07 (issue #188). The first entry to use OGN-048 Meditation or OGN-049 Playful Phantom. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt. Citations opened and quoted: 103.1.b.3, 103.2.b, 144.1.b, 144.2, 203.3, 415.3.a, 420.3.a, 431.1.a, 464.2.c.3, 465.2.b, 469, 813.1.c.1. The entry rescues a printed blank: OGN-049 has no rules text, and the reason it is in uses[] rather than refused is that a body with no abilities has no opportunity cost when tapped. The optional-versus-mandatory contrast with SFD-044 Legion Quartermaster (same lane, batch 8) is stated in both entries. Ban check: neither card is banned or restricted; neither is a Signature card. No unruled reading.
