Combo · ENGINE
A [Level] rider on a PLAY trigger is spent for good if the copy is played early - which is what [Hunt 2] is for
Pieces
- Mosstomper ×3
UNL-047 · engine · calm
[Hunt 2] (When I conquer or hold, gain 2 XP.) [Level 3][>] I have +1 Might and [Deflect]. (While you have 3+ XP, get the effect. Opponents must pay 1 Power of any domain to choose a [Deflect] unit with a spell or ability.)
- Wuju Apprentice ×3
UNL-040 · payoff · calm
[Hunt] (When I conquer or hold, gain 1 XP.) [Level 6][>] When you play me, draw 1. (While you have 6+ XP, get the effect.)
Payoff
Deck
- Both cards are mono-Calm, so 103.1.b.3 admits any legend with Calm in its pair.
- Neither card is banned or restricted in either format, and neither is a Signature card.
- A deck that never SPENDS XP: 824.1.d switches both rungs off the moment the counter drops below the threshold, and 730.2 is what any spend does.
Prerequisites
- A THRESHOLD RIDER ON A PLAY TRIGGER IS SPENT FOR GOOD, WHICH A CONTINUOUS ONE IS NOT. Mosstomper's '[Level 3] I have +1 :rb_might: and [Deflect]' is continuous - 824.1.d makes the Dependent Ability Active or Inactive as the counter moves, so a Mosstomper played at 0 XP simply switches on later. Wuju Apprentice's '[Level 6] When you play me, draw 1' is a play trigger: if the ability is Inactive when the card is played, the trigger never happens and no later XP brings it back. **Hold the Apprentice until six.** That distinction is not on either card and it decides the whole sequencing.
- AND [HUNT 2] IS WHY SIX IS REACHABLE AT ALL. 823.1.c.1: 'Hunt is functionally short for "When I Conquer or Hold, my controller gains X XP"', and 315.2.b.2 Holds every battlefield you control at your Beginning Phase, with 485.4 putting two on a Duel table. So a Mosstomper on each held battlefield is 4 XP in ONE Beginning Phase - the [Level 3] is live after the first, and six after the second. A [Hunt 1] card takes twice as long.
- THE CHEAP RUNG PAYS WHILE THE EXPENSIVE ONE IS STILL COMING. [Level 3] is the lowest threshold in the pool, and what it buys is [Deflect] - which 809.1.c prices as extra Power on any spell or ability that CHOOSES the Mosstomper, in any Domain (809.1.c.1). 355.10.d is the hole: a sweeper selects programmatically and pays nothing.
- THE FAMILY, NAMED, AND ITS FAUCETS RANKED. In Calm the XP cards are UNL-034 Herald of Spring ([Hunt], plus 2 XP on play - the biggest single jump), UNL-040 Wuju Apprentice ([Hunt], [Level 6] draw), UNL-047 Mosstomper ([Hunt 2], [Level 3]), UNL-031 Combat Experience ([Level 6] rider on a pump) and UNL-038 Skyward Strike ([Level 6] rider on a move). The Mosstomper is the fastest per turn and the Herald the fastest per card; a list that wants six quickly runs both.
- AND THIS IS THE CALM CORNER OF A PATTERN THE PROJECT NOW HAS THREE OF. bandle-soldier-enthralling-protector-xp-floor (Order, [Level 3]) and concentrate-grim-resolve-level-ladder (Body, [Level 6] / [Level 11]) both need the counter BANKED, and wily-newtfish-gemhand-hunter-xp-turn (Body) reads a gain in the turn and is indifferent to spending. Every threshold entry in the catalogue is anti-synergic with every XP sink, and this one is no exception.
- WHAT IT IS NOT. Nothing here scores. [Hunt] is PAID BY a Hold and does not cause one; 469 defines Scoring as Conquer or Hold.
- SAME CARVE-OUT AS THE LEGION PLAY-TRIGGERS, UNDER A DIFFERENT KEYWORD (upgrade 2026-09-12, #191 batch 24). `UNL-040 Wuju Apprentice` has the shape 812.1.b.1 describes for Legion - a Dependent Ability that is a Triggered Ability whose condition occurs at the same instant the keyword`s condition is fulfilled - so 721.2 would say it missed and 725.4 is why it does not: *"that text exists and can be processed as it is fulfilled."* 725.4 was cited by nothing in this project before, and 727.1.c.1.a beside it was cited by exactly one entry, which is about a Level PASSIVE rather than a trigger.
Steps
- Play Mosstomper (3 Energy + 1 Power) and take a battlefield with it; a second copy at your other battlefield doubles the rate.
- At your Beginning Phase, 315.2.b.2 Holds every battlefield you control and [Hunt 2] pays 2 XP per Mosstomper that held.
- At 3 XP the Mosstomper's own rung switches on: +1 Might and [Deflect], which taxes any targeted answer by a rainbow (809.1.c).
- At 6 XP - the second such Beginning Phase with two Mosstompers - play Wuju Apprentice (2 Energy) and draw 1.
- Do NOT play the Apprentice earlier: its rider hangs off a PLAY trigger, so a copy played below six draws nothing and never will.
- Never spend the XP: 730.2 reduces the counter and 824.1.d switches both rungs off at once.
Per iteration
2 XP per Mosstomper per Hold, and one card per Wuju Apprentice played at or above six
How it ends
engine only - three of each card by 103.2.b, and every rung goes dark the moment anything spends the XP (824.1.d + 730.2); nothing here scores

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-07 (issue #188). The first entry to use UNL-047 Mosstomper or UNL-040 Wuju Apprentice. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt. Citations opened and quoted: 103.1.b.3, 103.2.b, 315.2.b.2, 355.10.d, 469, 485.4, 730.2, 809.1.c, 809.1.c.1, 823.1.c.1, 824.1.d. The load-bearing distinction is between a [Level] rider on a CONTINUOUS ability and one on a PLAY TRIGGER: 824.1.d re-evaluates the first as the counter moves, while the second is spent for good if the copy is played below the threshold. Completes the project's XP set with a Calm corner alongside the Order and Body entries, and all four name each other. Ban check: neither card is banned or restricted; neither is a Signature card. No unruled reading.
