Combo · ENGINE
Of the six cards that Empower themselves without an [Empower] cost, four are legends - and one of the two units does it for free
Pieces
- Mournful Witness ×3
VEN-028 · engine · calm
When a combat that I was in ends, empower me. (I become Empowered if I'm not already.) [Empowered][>] I have +2 Might.
- Serene Ascetic ×3
VEN-030 · payoff · calm
[Empower] 3 Energy (3 Energy: Empower me. Use only if not Empowered.) [Empowered][>] I have [Deflect] and [Shield 3]. (Opponents must pay 1 Power of any domain to choose me with a spell or ability.+3 Might while I'm a defender.)
Payoff
Deck
- Both cards are mono-Calm, so 103.1.b.3 admits any legend with Calm in its pair.
- Neither card is banned or restricted in either format, and neither is a Signature card.
- For the Witness, a combat it is in - which 740.2.c defines as occupying a battlefield where combat is ongoing with a combat designation. Surviving it is not required by the wording, but a dead body cannot be Empowered.
Prerequisites
- THE SWEEP, WITH ITS MEMBERS NAMED. `grep -in "empower me\|empower this"` filtered to rows WITHOUT an [Empower] keyword cost returns six cards: four legends - VEN-143 Master of Shadows, VEN-151 Soul's Reflection, VEN-153 Matriarch of War, VEN-155 Heart of the Tempest - and two units, VEN-028 Mournful Witness and VEN-092 Renekton, Brute. Renekton's is conditional on his Might reaching 10, which he buys at 1 Energy per point; the Witness's is a plain combat trigger. **It is the only unit in the pool that becomes Empowered for no resources at all.**
- AND 441.1 IS WHY THAT IS A REAL SAVING RATHER THAN A REWORDING. 441.1: 'Empowering is the act of rendering one or more Game Objects Empowered' - an effect that Empowers performs the ACT and never pays the target's printed [Empower] cost, which is the same reading this project applied to a gear Empowering another gear. 441.2 then makes the state permanent ('a state for Game Objects on the board') and 441.1.b forbids re-Empowering, so the Witness's trigger is worth exactly one firing and every later combat adds nothing.
- WHAT THE TWO EMPOWERS ARE WORTH, SIDE BY SIDE. The Witness is 2 Energy for a body that becomes a 4 Might after its first combat, free. The Ascetic is 3 Energy for the body and 3 more for the state, and what that buys is [Deflect] - extra Power on any spell or ability that CHOOSES it, in any Domain (809.1.c, 809.1.c.1) - plus [Shield 3], which 814.1.c makes '+3 :rb_might: while I am a defender', so a 3 Might body defends as a 6 and cannot be answered cheaply. Six Energy for a permanent defensive anchor is the honest price.
- AND THE HOLE IS THE SAME ONE [DEFLECT] ALWAYS HAS. 355.10.d keeps a programmatically selected object off the target list, so every sweeper in the pool goes through the Ascetic untaxed; and 054.1's 'can't beats can' is the stronger protection this domain also prints, which akali-silent-twilight-shroud-cant-be-chosen walks.
- NEITHER TRIGGERS A 'WHEN YOU EMPOWER' LEGEND IN THIS DOMAIN, AND THAT IS WORTH KNOWING BEFORE BUILDING. 441.2.a makes becoming Empowered an event that other effects can reference, and the pool's payoffs for it are VEN-151 Soul's Reflection (Mind/Chaos) and VEN-153 Matriarch of War (Body/Order) - neither of which a Calm/Mind list can run. In Calm the Empower is worth what the card itself says and nothing more.
- WHAT IT IS NOT. Nothing here scores; 469 defines Scoring as Conquer or Hold. And 441.1.b caps each body at one Empower, so this is a pair of one-time purchases and not a rate.
Steps
- Play Mournful Witness (2 Energy) and put it into a combat - either side; 740.2.c is what 'in combat' means.
- When that combat ends, its trigger Empowers it for nothing (441.1 performs the act; no [Empower] cost is ever determined) and it is a 4 Might body from then on.
- 441.1.b means the second combat adds nothing - the state is permanent (441.2) and one firing is all it is worth.
- Play Serene Ascetic (3 Energy) and pay its [Empower] of 3 Energy when you can afford it.
- It now carries [Deflect] - a rainbow tax on anything that chooses it (809.1.c) - and [Shield 3], so it defends as a 6 (814.1.c).
- Expect a sweeper to ignore the [Deflect] entirely (355.10.d).
Per iteration
one free Empower per Mournful Witness after its first combat, and a permanent defensive anchor for 6 Energy on the Ascetic
How it ends
engine only - 441.1.b caps each body at one Empower, so this is three one-time purchases per card (103.2.b) rather than a rate; nothing here scores

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-07 (issue #188). The first entry to use VEN-028 Mournful Witness or VEN-030 Serene Ascetic. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt. Citations opened and quoted: 054.1, 103.1.b.3, 103.2.b, 355.10.d, 441.1, 441.1.b, 441.2, 441.2.a, 469, 740.2.c, 809.1.c, 809.1.c.1, 814.1.c. UNIQUENESS SWEPT, NOT ASSUMED: the six cards that Empower themselves with no [Empower] cost are named, four are legends, and of the two units Renekton's is gated on reaching Might 10 - so the Witness is the only unit that does it for no resources. The entry states plainly that neither Empower feeds a 'when you empower' payoff in this domain pair, since both such legends are out of identity. Ban check: neither card is banned or restricted; neither is a Signature card. No unruled reading.
