Combo · ENGINE
The Helm is short of BUFFED BODIES, never of deaths - and a battlefield that buffs on every Hold supplies them for nothing
Pieces
- Navori Fighting Pit ×1
OGN-283 · battlefield
When you hold here, buff a unit here. (If it doesn't have a buff, it gets a +1 Might buff.)
- Vanguard Helm ×1
OGN-228 · payoff · order
When a buffed friendly unit dies, buff another friendly unit. (If it doesn't have a buff, it gets a +1 Might buff.)
Payoff
Deck
- Vanguard Helm is mono-Order and the battlefield is Colorless, so 103.1.b.3 admits any legend with Order in its pair.
- Neither card is banned or restricted in either format, and neither is a Signature card. OGN-269/OGN-310 The Boss is a legal Body/Order legend and is the one name to avoid - see the notables.
- The battlefield is not guaranteed: 485.4.a has each player provide three and 485.5 selects randomly, and 103.4.c forbids a second copy of the same name. State it in any list that depends on it. 190.1 also makes a battlefield you provide start UNCONTROLLED, and 190.6.d ignores every instruction of an uncontrolled battlefield's abilities that refers to 'you'.
Prerequisites
- THIS RE-OPENS A REFUSAL, AND ONLY BECAUSE THE REASON IT WAS GIVEN DOES NOT COVER THIS PAIRING. OGN-283 Navori Fighting Pit was refused as a partner for READY-ON-BUFF payoffs: 315.1 Awaken precedes 315.2's Beginning Phase, so everything you control has already been readied when the Hold fires and a 'when you buff, ready it' trigger is a no-op. That reasoning is correct and untouched. It says nothing about a payoff that wants a buffed BODY rather than a ready one, which is what OGN-228 Vanguard Helm is.
- WHY A BUFFED BODY IS THE SCARCE THING. 702.2.a: 'To Buff a Unit, a player chooses a Unit and then places a buff on it.' 702.3: 'There can only be one Buff on a Unit at a time', with 702.3.a - a buff added to a unit that already has one 'is not placed instead' - and 703 fixing each buff at exactly +1 Might. So a buffer is a one-time placement per body, and this catalogue's measurement is that the Helm is always short of buffed bodies, never of deaths. The Pit places one free buff every Beginning Phase you hold it, on a unit you choose - which is a supply of buffed corpses that costs no card at all.
- AND THE RATE IS EXACTLY ONE A TURN, BY THE SAME PHASE ORDER. 315.2.b.2 Holds every battlefield you control, so the Pit fires once per Beginning Phase; 470 caps Scoring at once per battlefield per turn and 103.4.c forbids a second copy of the Pit, so there is no second placement. One buff in, one buff recycled per buffed casualty out.
- THE PIT'S BUFF NAMES 'A UNIT HERE', WHICH IS WHY IT IS NOT WASTED. 702.3.a would throw away a placement aimed at an already-buffed body, so the choice matters: put it on a body that will trade, not on the one that already carries a buff. The Helm's own text is 'buff another friendly unit', a single placement with the same constraint.
- THE LEGEND THAT SWITCHES THE PAYOFF OFF, BY NAME. OGN-269 The Boss reads 'If a buffed unit you control would die, you may pay :rb_rune_rainbow:, exhaust me, and spend its buff to heal it, exhaust it, and recall it instead.' 808.1.d.1 removes the Helm's trigger from the chain when the body never reaches the Trash, and 702.2.b's spend takes the buff as well - The Boss takes both halves. A mono-Order legend avoids the fork.
- WHAT IT IS NOT. Nothing here scores; the Hold that fires the Pit scores by 469.1 and 471.1, but neither card causes a Hold that would not have happened. And 190.6.d is worth checking on any battlefield entry: the Pit says 'when YOU hold here', so it is dead until you control it (190.1).
Bodies no card supplies
Play Vanguard Helm (2 Energy) and take control of the Navori Fighting Pit by walking a body in (190.1, 466.5)
Steps
- Play Vanguard Helm (2 Energy) and take control of the Navori Fighting Pit by walking a body in (190.1, 466.5).
- At your Beginning Phase, 315.2.b.2 Holds it and the Pit places a free buff on a unit there - choose one that will trade, since 702.3.a wastes a placement on an already-buffed body.
- Let that body die. The Helm triggers and moves the buff onto another friendly unit that had none.
- Repeat every turn you hold the Pit: one free placement in, one recovery out per buffed casualty.
- Do not run OGN-269 The Boss as the legend - 808.1.d.1 and 702.2.b together take both halves.
Per iteration
one free buff placed per Hold, and one recycled onto a fresh body per buffed casualty, with no card spent on either
How it ends
engine only - one Pit buff per Beginning Phase (470 with 103.4.c) and one Helm recovery per buffed death, wasted once every remaining body is buffed (702.3.a); nothing here scores

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-07 (issue #193, part 3). The first entry to use OGN-283 Navori Fighting Pit. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt. Citations opened and quoted: 103.1.b.3, 103.4.c, 190.1, 190.6.d, 315.1, 315.2.b.2, 466.5, 469.1, 470, 471.1, 485.4.a, 485.5, 702.2.a, 702.2.b, 702.3, 702.3.a, 703, 808.1.d.1. RE-OPENS A REFUSAL WITH ITS SCOPE STATED: the Pit was refused as a READY-ON-BUFF partner because 315.1's Awaken precedes 315.2's Hold, which is correct and untouched; it says nothing about a payoff that wants a buffed BODY, and the Vanguard Helm is exactly that. Companion to trifarian-gloryseeker-vanguard-helm-legion-buff (#180), vanguard-helm-kinkou-monk-buff-conservation and vanguard-helm-baited-hook-buff-ladder - four Helm entries now, each bounded by a different scarcity, and this is the one whose supply costs no card. Ban check: neither card is banned or restricted. No unruled reading.
