Payoff
Deck
- Jax, Unmatched and Doran's Shield are both mono-Calm and Ornn's Forge is Colorless, so 103.1.b.3 admits any legend with Calm in its pair: OGN-255/OGN-303 Nine-Tailed Fox, OGN-257/OGN-304 Blind Monk, OGN-259/OGN-305 Unforgiven, OGN-261/OGN-306 Radiant Dawn, SFD-189/SFD-244 Fire Below the Mountain, SFD-193/SFD-245 Grandmaster at Arms, SFD-195/SFD-246 Blade Dancer, SFD-197/SFD-247 Emperor of the Sands, UNL-189/UNL-230 Bashful Bloom, UNL-191/UNL-231 Wuju Master, UNL-193/UNL-232 Gloomist, UNL-195/UNL-233 Green Father, VEN-139/VEN-189 Rogue Assassin, VEN-145/VEN-192 Curator of the Sands, VEN-147/VEN-193 Eye of Twilight, OGS-019 Wuju Bladesman - Starter (restricted in 2v2).
Prerequisites
- THE TWO HALVES PAY THE TWO DIFFERENT COSTS AN EQUIPMENT HAS, AND THAT IS THE ENTRY. 818.1 makes Equip a separate Activated Ability with its own cost, so an Equipment normally costs its Energy to PLAY and then its [Equip] cost to ATTACH. Ornn's Forge zeroes the first for one gear a turn; [Quick-Draw] deletes the second entirely, because 819.1.d's attach is part of the play trigger and not an Equip activation.
- AND IT LANDS AT REACTION SPEED. 819.1.b gives the gear [Reaction] inherently and 819.1.c permits playing AND attaching at Reaction timing, so this happens inside the Closed State a combat opens (813.1.c.1), after 464.2.c.3 has designated the attackers.
- WHICH MAKES IT A SECOND, CHEAPER ROUTE TO THE TANK REDIRECT. 815.1.c.2 — 'Units without Tank are invalid assignments until all units with Tank have lethal damage assigned to them' — so granting [Tank] to one body makes every other body of yours an illegal assignment. This walk's eye-of-twilight-zephyr-sage-tank-redirect buys the same effect with a legend's exhaust; this buys it with a card that also leaves +1 Might behind permanently. The two are alternatives, not a stack.
- ONE GEAR A TURN, AND IT MUST BE THE FIRST. 'The first friendly non-token gear played each turn' — playing anything else first spends the discount, and a Gold token is excluded by the word non-token anyway.
- THE POOL HAS SIX EQUIPMENT AT E1, ONE PER DOMAIN, and a two-domain identity reaches two of them: SFD-009 Serrated Dirk (Fury), SFD-033 Doran's Shield (Calm), SFD-073 Experimental Hexplate (Mind), SFD-108 Warmog's Armor (Body), SFD-134 Cull (Chaos), SFD-153 Eye of the Herald (Order). Named so the count is refutable in one grep. Three copies each (103.2.b), so a Calm/X deck has six free plays across a game.
- 819.2 MAKES A SECOND INSTANCE OF QUICK-DRAW WORTHLESS ('do not trigger separately and have no effect beyond the first'), so a second Jax adds nothing and no multiplier reaches this.
- ORNN'S FORGE HAS TO BE CONQUERED and is not guaranteed to be on the table: 190.1, 190.6.d, 485.4.a, 485.5, 486.5, 103.4.c.
Steps
- Take Ornn's Forge and keep a body on it; until you control it 190.6.d ignores the discount entirely.
- Play Jax, Unmatched (E5 + 1 Calm Power). His clause is a static over 'your Equipment everywhere', so every gear in hand, on the board and in the deck now has [Quick-Draw].
- Wait for the opponent's attack. Inside the Combat's Closed State (312.2.c, 813.1.c.1), play Doran's Shield: it is the first non-token gear you have played this turn, so Ornn's Forge takes its E1 to 0 (356.6 floors it there).
- 819.1.d's play trigger attaches it to a unit you control for no cost at all — no [Equip] activation, so 818.1's cost is never determined.
- 434.1.c appends the Shield's [Effect] to that carrier: it now has [Tank] and, by 434.1.d, +1 Might.
- 815.1.c.2 makes every other unit you control in this Combat an invalid damage assignment until the carrier has lethal damage. Repeat next turn with the next E1 Equipment.
Per iteration
one E1 Equipment played and attached for zero Energy and zero Power, at Reaction speed, per turn
How it ends
engine only — one free gear a turn for as long as you hold Ornn's Forge, bounded by how many E1 Equipment the identity contains (six per domain pair at three copies each, 103.2.b); nothing here scores

REFUTE = a refutation pass, with its date and verdict · WOUNDED = the pass found a flaw and the entry was rewritten · BUDGETED = the pass checked the recycle-and-draw ledger · lens = the hunt that proposed it.
HAND-WALKED 2026-09-07, issue #171 — the first entry to use SFD-213. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt. The content is that an Equipment has TWO costs and these two cards pay one each, which is stated with 818.1 (Equip is a separate Activated Ability) against 819.1.d (the attach is part of the play trigger) rather than asserted. The six E1 Equipment are NAMED so the count is refutable in one grep, per the #175 correction. Trap check: 819.2 is cited so a second Jax is not counted; 'the FIRST gear each turn' is stated as an ordering constraint; 190.1 + 190.6.d are cited because this battlefield DOES say 'you control' and therefore has to be taken, unlike the six 'no you' battlefields found earlier in this walk; the relationship to eye-of-twilight-zephyr-sage-tank-redirect is named in both directions so the two are read as alternatives.
