VEN-029 · engine · calm
I can't be played on your first, second, or third turns.
Payoff
Deck
- Calm + Mind: Ol' Poro is mono-Calm and Otterpus mono-Mind (103.1.b.3), so 103.1.b.2 needs a legend covering both - OGN-255/OGN-303 Nine-Tailed Fox, SFD-189/SFD-244 Fire Below the Mountain, UNL-189/UNL-230 Bashful Bloom or VEN-145/VEN-192 Curator of the Sands.
- Neither card is banned or restricted in either format, and neither is a Signature card.
- A deck that genuinely does not score on turns one and two. Otterpus is symmetric, and against a list that races it costs you as much as them.
Prerequisites
- THE OTTERPUS IS A REPLACEMENT, NOT A PROHIBITION, AND THE DIFFERENCE IS WHAT IT LEAVES BEHIND. 'If a player WOULD score 1 point ... they draw 1 INSTEAD' is the shape 367 covers, so the Score never happens - the point is not gained and then removed. 469 defines Scoring as a Conquer or a Hold, and 470 caps each battlefield at one Score a turn, so on turn one or two the whole of a normal board's output is two points and this card converts every one of them into a card.
- AND IT DOES NOT TOUCH A CARD-TEXT POINT. 194.1 lists three separate ways to gain points and 194.1.c is 'Spells, Triggered Abilities and Activated Abilities that instruct them to gain one or more points' - a GAIN, not a Score. 471.1.a.1 says the same from the other side. So an early point from a card's text goes through untouched; only a Conquer or a Hold is replaced, which is what the card says.
- THE SYMMETRY IS THE HONEST COST AND IT IS NOT NEUTRAL. Both players are covered, so this is only an advantage to a deck whose own first two turns score nothing - which is exactly the deck that wants Ol' Poro. 190.1 helps: 'Control is established over Battlefields through the course of play', so both battlefields start uncontrolled and an early Score means walking a body out early, which a control shell was not going to do.
- OL' PORO IS THE BEST MIGHT-PER-ENERGY BODY IN THE DOMAIN AND THE RESTRICTION IS PRICED, NOT FREE. Four Might for two Energy is a rate nothing else in Calm matches at that cost; what it gives up is turns one to three, which are exactly the turns 315.3.b's two-runes-a-turn curve has not yet paid for a four-drop anyway. The cards are a matched pair not because they interact - they do not - but because they are priced for the same deck, and an entry that pretends otherwise would be inventing an interaction.
- AND THE OTTERPUS IS A BODY, WHICH IS THE OTHER HALF OF ITS COST. 2 Energy for 2 Might is a poor rate; the clause is the card. It has to be on the board during the opponent's first or second turn to do anything, which means playing it on YOUR first turn - and 143.4 enters it exhausted, so it holds nothing that turn either.
- WHAT IT IS NOT. Nothing here scores; 469 defines Scoring as Conquer or Hold and one of these two cards exists to stop it happening. This is a denial-and-curve pair, and the entry says so rather than dressing it as an engine.
Steps
- Play Otterpus (2 Energy) on your first turn, so it is on the board for the opponent's first and second.
- Any Score they would take from a Conquer or a Hold in that window becomes a card for them instead - 367's replacement, so no point is ever gained.
- Accept the symmetry: your own early Conquer or Hold is replaced too, which is free only if the deck was not going to make one.
- From your fourth turn, Ol' Poro (2 Energy) is a 4 Might body - the best rate in the domain at that cost, and the restriction has already expired.
- Note that a card-text point (194.1.c) is a Gain and not a Score, so the Otterpus does not stop one.
Per iteration
every early Conquer or Hold in the game converted to a card, and a 4 Might body for 2 Energy from turn four
How it ends
engine only - the Otterpus is blank from the opponent's third turn onward, and three of each card by 103.2.b; nothing here scores

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-07 (issue #188). The first entry to use VEN-053 Otterpus or VEN-029 Ol' Poro. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt. Citations opened and quoted: 103.1.b.2, 103.1.b.3, 103.2.b, 143.4, 190.1, 194.1, 194.1.c, 315.3.b, 367, 469, 470, 471.1.a.1. The entry states plainly that the two cards do NOT interact - they are priced for the same deck - because inventing an interaction between two cards that share only a timing assumption is the failure mode a cross-audit catches. The Score-versus-Gain distinction is the load-bearing rules point: a card-text point is 194.1.c and the Otterpus does not touch it. Ban check: neither card is banned or restricted; neither is a Signature card. No unruled reading.
