Combo · ENGINE
An exhausted rune is bad mana and a full unit of COUNT - which is the half the refusal was not scoped to
Pieces
- The Papertree ×1
SFD-219 · battlefield
When you hold here, each player channels 1 rune exhausted.
- Esteemed Hierophant ×3
VEN-025 · payoff · calm
While you control 7 or more runes, prevent all damage that enemy spells and abilities would deal to me.
Payoff
Deck
- The Hierophant is mono-Calm and the battlefield is Colorless, so 103.1.b.3 admits any legend with Calm in its pair.
- Neither card is banned or restricted in either format, and neither is a Signature card.
- The battlefield is not guaranteed: 485.4.a has each player provide three and 485.5 selects randomly, and 103.4.c forbids a second copy of the same name. State it in any list that depends on it. 190.1 also makes a battlefield you provide start UNCONTROLLED, and 190.6.d ignores every instruction of an uncontrolled battlefield's abilities that refers to 'you'.
Prerequisites
- THIS RE-OPENS A REFUSAL, AND THE SCOPE IS THE WHOLE POINT. SFD-219 The Papertree was refused on two strikes, both about MANA: the rune arrives EXHAUSTED and the Hold is at 315.2.b, after 315.1's Awaken has already run, so 315.1.b will not ready it until your next turn; and any Power it could pay in the Beginning Phase is emptied by 167 at the start of your Main Phase. Both are true and neither is touched here. What they do not cover is a payoff that reads a rune COUNT rather than mana - and this project has already re-opened OGN-288 Startipped Peak for exactly that reason, twice refused on mana grounds while its real partners (VEN-032 Frostcoat Mother, VEN-050 Grumpy Rockbear) price an [Empower] by 'each rune you CONTROL'.
- AND AN EXHAUSTED RUNE IS A RUNE YOU CONTROL. 164.2 gives a Basic Rune two abilities and only 164.2.a costs its own exhaust; 164.2.b's cost is the RECYCLE, so an exhausted rune is still on the board, still yours, and still counted. 430.2.a is the default the Papertree overrides ('runes are channeled readied' unless the effect says exhausted), and 415.3.a is when it becomes mana - none of which the threshold asks about.
- THE FAMILY THAT READS THE COUNT, WITH ITS MEMBERS NAMED. Seven or more runes: VEN-025 Esteemed Hierophant, VEN-037 Tomb-Raider Barbara, VEN-146 Siphoning Strike (swept, `grep -in "7 or more runes"`, three rows and no others). Eight or more: OGS-004 Yi, Meditative. And priced per rune: VEN-032 Frostcoat Mother and VEN-050 Grumpy Rockbear ('[Empower] 12 Energy. This ability costs 1 Energy less for each rune you control'). The Papertree accelerates every one of them by one rune a turn.
- THE ARITHMETIC, AND WHY ONE RUNE A TURN IS A LOT HERE. 161.2.a fixes the Rune Deck at 'Exactly 12 Rune cards' and 315.3.b channels two free every Channel Phase, so an untouched curve reaches seven late on turn four; the Papertree's extra rune brings that forward by a full turn, and it brings twelve forward by two. 430.3 ('channel as many as possible') is what stops it once the deck is empty, at which point the battlefield does nothing for either player.
- THE SYMMETRY IS THE HONEST COST AND IT IS SMALL - WITH ONE NAMED EXCEPTION. 'Each player' means the opponent's curve accelerates too, which matters only if they read a rune count. It is genuinely ANTI-SYNERGIC with one line this catalogue holds: sandstone-chimera-yi-meditative-rune-prison wants the opponent's channel HALVED, and the Papertree hands them back exactly the rune the Chimera took. Do not run both.
- WHAT THE HIEROPHANT'S THRESHOLD BUYS, AND WHAT IT DOES NOT. 437.4 makes the prevention total - 'Damage dealt to a Unit that has that all of that damage Prevented is not considered to have been dealt to it at all' - so no kill event is generated. But the clause is scoped to 'enemy spells and abilities', and 417.6.c makes combat damage come from the UNITS, while 417.6.b.3 does the same for the whole Challenge family. Both go straight through.
- WHAT IT IS NOT. Nothing here scores; 469 defines Scoring as Conquer or Hold, and the Hold that fires the Papertree scores by 469.1 whether or not the battlefield is this one.
- 437.2 IS WHY 437.4 WORKS, AND IT SITS ONE PARAGRAPH AWAY IN THE SAME BLOCK: "When damage is Prevented, it is replaced with an event where it deals that much damage reduced by the Prevent Value tracked on the Unit specifically." Prevent does not undo damage after the fact - it REPLACES the damage event with a smaller one, and at zero there is nothing left to mark, which is the mechanism behind 437.4's "not considered to have been dealt to it at all." 369.2 puts it beyond argument by naming it: "Some Game Actions are themselves Replacement Effects. Example: Burning Out is a replacement effect. Example: Preventing Damage is a replacement effect." So a Prevent and a heal/exhaust/recall would-die shield are BOTH Replacement Effects and differ in WHICH EVENT they replace - the damage event against the death event - which is the precise reason this line generates no kill event.
Steps
- Take control of The Papertree by walking a body in (190.1, 466.5); 190.6.d is why its text does nothing before that.
- At each of your Beginning Phases, 315.2.b.2 Holds it and every player channels 1 rune exhausted.
- That rune is not mana this turn - 315.1's Awaken has already run and 167 empties the pool at your Main Phase - but it IS a rune you control from the moment it arrives (164.2, 164.2.b).
- Play Esteemed Hierophant (5 Energy). Past seven runes, 437.4 means no enemy spell or ability can deal it damage at all.
- Expect it to die in combat anyway (417.6.c) and to the Challenge family (417.6.b.3).
- Stop expecting the battlefield to pay once the Rune Deck is empty: 430.3 channels as many as possible, which is then none.
- Do not run this beside sandstone-chimera-yi-meditative-rune-prison - the Papertree hands the opponent back the rune the Chimera took.
Per iteration
one extra rune of COUNT per Hold, bringing every rune threshold in the deck forward by a turn
How it ends
engine only - one rune a turn until the Rune Deck's twelve are out (161.2.a with 430.3), and the acceleration is symmetric; nothing here scores

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-07 (issue #193, part 3). The first entry to use SFD-219 The Papertree. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt. RE-OPENS A REFUSAL WITH ITS SCOPE STATED: #171 refused the Papertree on two MANA strikes, both correct and both untouched; its real partners read a rune COUNT, which an exhausted rune supplies in full. That is the same re-scope this project already applied to OGN-288 Startipped Peak. The one anti-synergy is named rather than hidden. Ban check: neither card is banned or restricted; neither is a Signature card. No unruled reading.
