Deck
- Any Mind legend — Blue Sentinel and Renata Glasc, Mastermind are mono-Mind and Power Nexus is colorless (103.1.b.1, 103.1.b.3).
Prerequisites
- WHAT IS NEW HERE IS THE POWER, NOT THE POINT. When this was walked, nine entries used Blue Sentinel and six used Renata, Mastermind, and NOT ONE of them spent the Sentinel's own [Add] on anything. Both counts have since grown — twenty and seven as of the 362-entry catalogue — and two later entries do now spend it: power-nexus-atlas-sentinel-time-warp pays Time Warp's Power with it, and sentinel-trinity-time-warp-chain says so in its own terminatesIn. The counts are recorded as of the walk; the timing rule below is the durable half. It is easy to miss because 167 empties the Rune Pool 'at the start of each player's Main Phase' and the Sentinel's Power arrives 'at the start of your next Main Phase' — the two look like they cancel. They do not: 316.2 puts the Main Phase's Outstanding Tasks 'in the specified order', 316.3 'Each player's Rune Pool empties' FIRST and 316.4 'At the start of Main Phase game effects take place' SECOND. The six rainbow land after the sweep and are spendable, and 135.2.e.5.b lets [A] 'be spent to pay a Power cost of any Domain', so they cover Renata's four Mind Power exactly.
- TWO POINTS A TURN WITH NO RUNE SPENT ON POWER AT ALL, WHICH IS THE STEADY STATE THAT MATTERS. Beginning Phase: base Hold, 1 point (469.2, 471.1). Main Phase: exhaust four runes for 4 Energy (164.2.a), pay Renata's four Mind Power out of the Sentinels' six rainbow, exhaust her — 1 point (194.1.c, R2 = A). Nothing is recycled, so 161.2.b never takes a rune off the board and the engine does not decay. Eight points in four turns from a two-card board plus the battlefield.
- THE NEXUS FIRINGS ARE THE BURST HALF AND THEY ARE NOT SUSTAINABLE, WHICH THIS ENTRY STATES RATHER THAN HIDES. A Nexus payment is Beginning-Phase Power and the only Beginning-Phase Power without Gold is a rune recycle, which 161.2.b sends to the Rune Deck; 315.3.b channels only 2 back per turn and 161.2.a caps the deck at 12. So on a turn with twelve runes banked the honest maximum is: recycle eight for two firings (+2), leaving four runes plus the two channelled — six Energy, enough for Renata's four. FOUR POINTS in one turn, once. Recycle twelve for three firings and there is no Energy left for Renata: still four. The steady state is two.
- SHE HAS TO STAND AT THE BATTLEFIELD, AND THAT IS THE COST. 'Use my abilities only while I'm at a battlefield' is a condition of the Activated Ability (377.2.b, whose own worked example quotes this wording inside the ability), so Renata is exposed at the Nexus alongside the Sentinels. heimerdinger-renata-remote-score is the entry that moves the exposure onto a 3-Energy body instead, under R30 = B; it is Body/Mind and cannot hold Blue Sentinel's Power source, so the two are alternatives.
- IT IS NOT A FOURTH COPY OF power-nexus-sentinel. That entry is the Nexus and the Sentinels alone and its point count is '1 + K per turn' out of the Beginning Phase; its Power problem is the rune ceiling and its own REFUTE note says so. This entry adds a MAIN-PHASE point that the Beginning-Phase Power shortage cannot touch, paid by a resource that entry generates and discards. power-nexus-atlas-sentinel-gold is the other way to spend the shortage — Gold instead of a second point sink — and the two stack in a Mind deck without competing, since the Gold pays the Beginning Phase and the Sentinels' rainbow pays the Main Phase.
- SFD-060 Tianna Crownguard switches both points off: 'While I'm at a battlefield, opponents can't gain points', and 194.1.c makes an ability score a Gain. She is catalogued as tianna-wildclaw-point-lock.
- THE BATTLEFIELD IS 1 OF 3 AT RANDOM in a Duel (485.4, 485.4.a, 485.5), starts uncontrolled (190.1, 190.6.d), and cannot be doubled up (103.4.c, Tournament Rules 402.1).
- THE FOUR RAINBOW DOES NOT HAVE TO BE BANKED, AND THIS ENTRY`S FUNDER IS AN OPTIMISATION RATHER THAN A REQUIREMENT (citation upgrade 2026-09-12, #200). 383.3.b makes the cost a BASE COST paid at finalization and 312.2.c withholds priority until every pending chain item finishes finalizing, which is why this catalogue concluded the Power had to be on the board already and reached for an Add-on-trigger card. **Priority is not payment.** 444.2.c: *"Players may activate abilities that Add resources with the Reaction keyword at any time that they are instructed to Pay resources. Those abilities finalize and resolve immediately, ignoring normal restrictions."* 164.2 gives every Basic Rune TWO abilities and both carry [Reaction], so 444.2.c reaches them; 164.2.b`s cost is the RECYCLE and not an exhaust, so a rune already tapped for Energy still pays; 164.2.b.1 Adds Power of that rune`s DOMAIN, which 135.2.e.5.a then makes legal against a rainbow cost (*"When required as a cost, [A] can be paid by Power of any Domain"*). So the Nexus is fundable out of runes in EVERY identity at four runes a point, and the Gold or Sentinel Add this entry uses is simply CHEAPER - see `power-nexus-rune-recycle-any-identity`, which walks the bare version.
- 204.3.a IS THE FIRST AND CLEANER SOURCE FOR THIS, AND IT CARRIES THE WORKED EXAMPLE: "When Costs within Instructions appear as the first part of the effect in triggered abilities, the cost is taken to be the base cost of the triggered ability. It must be paid to finalize the triggered ability", with Riot's example being Overzealous Fan - "When I defend, you may kill me to move an attacking unit to its base" - and the note that "in order to finalize the ability to the chain, its controller must kill Overzealous Fan". 383.3.b says the same thing later in the book. The companion is 204.3.b: a cost appearing in a SPELL, in an ACTIVATED ability, or in a LATER part of a trigger's effect is paid on resolution instead, which is the 205 "pay X. If you do, Y" family and the reason the two look alike on the card and behave differently on the chain.
Steps
- Establish Control of Power Nexus with two Blue Sentinels and Renata Glasc, Mastermind standing on it.
- Beginning Phase: Hold. Score 1. The two Sentinels' own hold triggers fire three times each and queue six rainbow for the start of your Main Phase.
- Main Phase: 316.3 empties the Rune Pool, then 316.4 delivers the six rainbow.
- Exhaust four runes for 4 Energy, spend four of the six rainbow on Renata's Mind Power, exhaust her: score 1. Two points, no rune recycled.
- On a turn with twelve runes banked, recycle eight of them first to pay two Nexus firings in the Beginning Phase — four points that turn, at the price of the rune board.
Per iteration
+2 points per turn; −4 Energy from runes; the Sentinels' 6 rainbow cover Renata's 4 Power with 2 to spare
How it ends
engine — 2 points a turn indefinitely with no Power spent from runes, spiking to 4 on a turn that cashes the twelve-rune board through the Nexus

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-06 (docs/phase0/walks/2026-09-06-engine-payoff-walk.md). The finding is a timing one and it is worth stating on its own: Blue Sentinel's '[Add] [A] at the start of your next Main Phase' is NOT swept by 167, because 316.2 orders the Main Phase's tasks and puts 316.3's sweep before 316.4's start-of-Main-Phase effects. Nine entries use Blue Sentinel and none spends that Power. Ban check: none of SFD-214, UNL-087 or SFD-088 is banned or Signature. Trap check: no attack; no [Temporary]; no [Repeat]; no token; no recall; both points are ability/Hold Gains, so 470's per-battlefield cap does not apply to Renata's (R2 = A). Depends on R1 = A, R2 = A and R8 = A, and on no open reading.
