Combo · ENGINE
381 bars the legend's own answer while Mel's trigger is still on the Chain, so the -2 Might has to come from an EARLIER empower
Pieces
- Rebuttal ×1
VEN-152 · engine · mind/chaos
[Reaction] (Play any time, even before spells and abilities resolve.) Choose a spell with Energy cost no more than 4 Energy. You may pay 1 Power of any domain. If you do, gain control of it and you may make new choices for it. Otherwise, counter it.
- Mel, Defiant Soul ×1
VEN-110 · payoff · chaos
[Empower] — Discard a spell (Pay the cost: Empower me. Use only if not Empowered.) When I become [Empowered], banish an enemy unit at a battlefield with 3 Might or less.
- Soul's Reflection ×1
VEN-151 · legend · mind/chaos
When you empower something else, empower me. (I become Empowered if I'm not already.) Disempower me, Exhaust: Give a unit at a battlefield -2 Might this turn.
Payoff
Deck
- ONE LEGEND, and it is a piece of the line rather than a container: Rebuttal is a Signature card tagged Mel, so 103.2.d.2 forces the pool's one Mel legend, Soul's Reflection (VEN-151), Mind/Chaos. Mel, Defiant Soul is mono-Chaos and sits inside it by 103.1.b.1.
- 103.2.d.1 caps the deck at three Signature cards, and three Rebuttals spend all of it.
- At least one empower event BEFORE the one that fires Mel — see the first notable. Without it the legend is not Empowered and the -2 does not exist.
Prerequisites
- THE OBVIOUS LINE DOES NOT WORK, AND 381 IS WHY. Empowering Mel fires two triggers at once — her 'When I become [Empowered]' banish and the legend's 'When you empower something else, empower me' — and 383.3.d lets you order them, with 340.1 resolving the newest first. So you can make the legend Empowered BEFORE the banish resolves. But the legend's answer is an ACTIVATED ability ('Disempower me, :rb_exhaust:: Give a unit -2 :rb_might:'), and 381 reads: 'All Activated Abilities can only be activated on the Controlling Player's Turn and during an Open State.' While Mel's banish is still on the Chain the state is Neutral Closed (310.2), so 340.4's priority window buys you nothing — the ability carries neither [Action] nor [Reaction]. The shrink cannot be bought inside the event that needs it.
- SO THE ENGINE IS OFFSET BY ONE EVENT, and that is the honest shape. Empower anything else first; the legend's trigger makes IT Empowered; later, in your own Neutral Open State, spend 'Disempower me, exhaust' on a 5-Might enemy to drop it to 3; THEN Empower Mel and let her banish take it. The banish ceiling goes from 3 Might to 5, and the same offset pattern the catalogue records for 383.3.b base costs recurs here for a completely different reason.
- AND IT IS ONCE PER BODY, FOREVER. 441.1.b: 'An Empowered Game Object can not be Empowered', with 441.1.c ('nothing additional happens') and 441.2 making Empowered a permanent state. Mel's banish is one per copy per game — three copies, three banishes (103.2.b) — and the legend's own cycle is what makes it repeatable at all, since 'Disempower me' returns it to a state that can be Empowered again by the next event.
- 206 IS WHY REBUTTAL'S WINDOW NEVER MOVES: a 'costs no more than N' check reads the PRINTED cost. So no discount sneaks an expensive spell into range for you, and no cost-increase (the pool prints exactly three: `VEN-045 Helm of Suppression`, `VEN-160 Mystic Vortex`, `UNL-219 Vaults of Helia`) pushes one out of it for them. The catalogue already records the mirror of this — a spell tax never widens your own counter's window — and this is the same paragraph read from the other side.
- THE STEAL SENDS THE CARD HOME. 191.1 / 191.2 make you the controller of what you play, so the choices are yours ('you may make new choices for it'), but 056 / 056.2 put a card into its OWNER's zones — so their spell resolves for you and then lands in THEIR trash, where their own recursion reads it. Countering it puts it in the same place; the rainbow buys the effect, not the card.
- AND THE PAIRING'S REAL CONTENT IS THAT REBUTTAL IS NEVER DEAD. Held up on the opponent's turn it is a counter or a theft; if they present nothing worth answering, it is the spell that Mel's [Empower] discards on your own turn — 381 confines that activation to your Open State, which is exactly where an unspent [Reaction] ends up. A one-Energy card with three uses and no null case.
- 204.3.a IS THE FIRST AND CLEANER SOURCE FOR THIS, AND IT CARRIES THE WORKED EXAMPLE: "When Costs within Instructions appear as the first part of the effect in triggered abilities, the cost is taken to be the base cost of the triggered ability. It must be paid to finalize the triggered ability", with Riot's example being Overzealous Fan - "When I defend, you may kill me to move an attacking unit to its base" - and the note that "in order to finalize the ability to the chain, its controller must kill Overzealous Fan". 383.3.b says the same thing later in the book. The companion is 204.3.b: a cost appearing in a SPELL, in an ACTIVATED ability, or in a LATER part of a trigger's effect is paid on resolution instead, which is the 205 "pay X. If you do, Y" family and the reason the two look alike on the card and behave differently on the chain.
Steps
- Play Mel, Defiant Soul (5 Energy) at a battlefield, and hold Rebuttal (1 Energy + 1 Power) up on the opponent's turn.
- If they play a spell whose PRINTED Energy cost is 4 or less (206), either counter it or pay one rainbow to take it and re-choose its targets.
- On some earlier turn, Empower any other permanent you control. The legend's trigger fires — 'When you empower something else, empower me' — and Soul's Reflection is now Empowered.
- In your own Main Phase, in a Neutral Open State (381, 310.1), use the legend: Disempower it and exhaust it to give a 5-Might enemy unit at a battlefield -2 Might this turn.
- Now pay Mel's [Empower] by discarding a spell — an unspent Rebuttal is the ideal card, since it costs you nothing you were going to use.
- Her trigger banishes that enemy unit, now at 3 Might. The legend's own trigger fires again from the same event and re-Empowers it, arming the next cycle.
Per iteration
one enemy body banished for a discarded spell, plus a counter or a stolen spell for 1 Energy + 1 Power whenever they present a target
How it ends
engine — one enemy unit banished per copy of Mel (441.1.b makes it once per body), at a ceiling of 3 Might alone or 5 Might with a legend shrink bought a turn earlier; nothing here scores

How this entry was audited
REFUTE = a refutation pass, with its date and verdict · WOUNDED = the pass found a flaw and the entry was rewritten · BUDGETED = the pass checked the recycle-and-draw ledger · lens = the hunt that proposed it.
VEN-152 Rebuttal was in ZERO entries; VEN-110 Mel and VEN-151 Soul's Reflection each appear in one other, and this is a different number and a different trap (the -2 Might raising Mel's banish ceiling, and 381 forbidding it inside the event). Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt; 056, 056.2, 103.1.b.1, 103.2.b, 103.2.d.1, 103.2.d.2, 108.6.c, 191.1, 191.2, 206, 310.1, 310.2, 340.1, 340.4, 381, 383.3.d, 441.1.b, 441.1.c, 441.2 opened in the Core Rules file. A different LEGAL ORDERING was tried first, as the project requires before filing any reading: 383.3.d does let the legend's trigger resolve before Mel's banish, and it still fails, because the payoff is an Activated Ability and 381 needs an Open State. No reading is filed.
