383.4.e with 383.4.f - 'when I attack or defend' is BOTH triggers, so it fires twice a turn cycle and the catalogue prices it at half
Pieces
- Recurve Bow ×1
SFD-016 · payoff · fury
[Equip] 1 Fury Power (1 Fury Power: Attach this to a unit you control.)
When I attack or defend, deal 2 to an enemy unit here.
- Loyal Pup ×1
SFD-126 · engine · chaos
When you defend at a battlefield, you may move me there.

Deck
- Recurve Bow is mono-Fury and Loyal Pup mono-Chaos, so 103.1.b.1 needs a Chaos/Fury legend. The census run against data/cards.json on 2026-09-12 gives five names: Loose Cannon (OGN-251/OGN-301), Dark Child - Starter (OGS-017), Glorious Executioner (SFD-185/SFD-242), Bloodharbor Ripper (UNL-185/UNL-228), Master of Shadows (VEN-143/VEN-191).
- Neither card is Signature (data/cards.json, signature=false on both) and neither appears in data/legality.json in either format - checked 2026-09-12.
Prerequisites
- 383.4.e AND 383.4.f READ TOGETHER MAKE ONE SENTENCE INTO TWO TRIGGERS, AND THE CATALOGUE HAS NEVER PRICED THE SECOND. 383.4.e: 'Attack Triggers are Triggered Abilities that trigger when a Unit or Player gains the Attacker designation for the first time during a combat.' 383.4.f: the same sentence for the Defender designation. A card worded 'When I attack or defend' satisfies BOTH definitions, so it is an Attack Trigger and a Defend Trigger at once - exactly the shape 823.1.b already states for the other pair: 'Hunt is both a Conquer and a Hold effect.' MEASURED 2026-09-12: six entries in this catalogue use an attack-or-defend card (ahri-foxfire-might-threshold, rell-magnetic-recurve-bow-per-attack, sentinel-adept-weaponmaster-free-attach, noxian-guillotine-recurve-bow-delayed-kill, blitzcrank-ezreal-dashing-forced-defence, cataclysmic-duel-fiora-peerless-permanent-one-on-one) and NOT ONE cites both paragraphs; two cite 383.4.e alone and one is named 'per-attack'.
- SO THE HONEST RATE IS TWICE PER TURN CYCLE, NOT ONCE PER TURN. 383.4.e.2 and 383.4.f.2 each put the trigger on the Chain when the carrier gains its designation, and 'for the first time during a combat' bounds each at one execution per combat. A pure 'When I attack' body pays only on your own turn. An attack-or-defend body pays on your turn when it attacks AND on the opponent's turn when it defends - the same card, the same body, two executions per round trip.
- THE POOL PRINTS THE PLAYER HALF ON ONE SIDE ONLY, AND THAT IS WHY DEFENCE IS EASY TO REINFORCE AND ATTACK IS NOT. 383.4.e.1 offers two shapes, 'When I attack...' or 'When you attack...'. MEASURED THREE WAYS on 2026-09-12 - grep -ic over data/corpus_flat.txt, a widened grep -oiE, and a scan of data/cards.json - the pool contains ZERO cards worded 'when you attack'. The defend side prints four: OGN-279 Fortified Position, OGN-285 Reaver's Row (banned in both formats), SFD-215 Ravenbloom Conservatory and SFD-126 Loyal Pup. So every attack trigger in the pool is on a UNIT and needs that unit present when 464.2.c.3 designates, which is the general form of the reinforcement problem this project records for the attack side; the defend side has a player-keyed trigger and does not.
- WHICH IS EXACTLY WHY THE LOYAL PUP DOES NOT HAVE TO BE THERE. His clause is 'When you defend at a battlefield' - 383.4.f's 'a Unit or Player' half - so it fires off your own designation as Defender (464.2.c.2: 'The Defender is the player who did not apply the Contested status to the Battlefield'), wherever he happens to be standing. loyal-pup-jagged-cutlass-free-defensive-relay walks the same relocation and does not say why it works; this is the paragraph, and it is a citation upgrade that entry is owed.
- AND A BATTLEFIELD CAN ONLY CARRY A DEFEND TRIGGER FOR THE SAME REASON. A battlefield is never a unit and never gains the Defender designation itself, so 'When you defend here' works only through 383.4.f's player half, read with 190.6.d ('“You” in a battlefield's abilities refers to the battlefield's Controller'). Three of the four player-keyed defend cards in the pool are battlefields.
- ONE EXECUTION PER COMBAT, SO BLINKING THE CARRIER BUYS NOTHING. 383.4.e.2.a: 'These triggers will only have their condition checked once per combat, despite a Unit being able to gain and lose the Attacker designation multiple times in the same combat.' The defend mirror is 383.4.f.2.a. So moving the carrier out of a combat and back in does not re-fire the Bow, and 383.4.f.2.b - uncited before this entry - closes the other door: 'If the trigger condition contains other requirements besides defending and if those requirements are not fulfilled when the unit gains the Defender designation, it will not trigger in that combat.' The Bow's clause carries no extra requirement, so nothing there bites it.
- THE ARITHMETIC, WITH BOTH CURRENCIES DECLARED. Loyal Pup E3, Recurve Bow E2, [Equip] one Fury rune - 5 Energy and one Power, once. After that: 2 damage to an enemy unit at the battlefield, every combat you defend anywhere, plus 2 more on any turn you attack with him. Three copies of the Bow is three carriers, not three triggers on one - 818.1 makes each [Equip] its own Activated Ability and 434.1.c appends each Effect Text once.
- HOW HE GETS THERE IN TIME, WHICH THE RELAY ENTRY ALREADY ESTABLISHED. 319.8 makes a Cleanup Outstanding after a Move completes, 323.2.a hands out designations in it, and 464.2.c.3.a defers the designation of a body that becomes present late to 'the Cleanup phase following the action that caused it to become present' - so the Pup arrives, is designated Defender, and the Bow's trigger goes on the Chain after that (383.4.f.2). 449 with 420.3.a is why the move is free and reaches a battlefield from anywhere: the exhaust cost sits on the Standard Move alone.
- THE SHORTFALL, STATED AS THE ENTRY'S OWN: two damage is two damage. This kills 1 and 2 Might bodies and chips anything larger, and 143.3.b heals the chip at the end of each turn and again in every Combat Cleanup, so it is a Might FILTER and never a clock. The Pup is Might 3 with a +0 Might Bonus, so he dies to most attacks he walks into and the engine ends with him; nothing here scores, and the class is ENGINE for that reason and not for want of arithmetic.
Steps
- Play Loyal Pup (E3) anywhere - his trigger does not care where he stands.
- Play Recurve Bow (E2) and pay its [Equip] of one Fury rune to attach it to him. 434.1.c appends 'When I attack or defend, deal 2 to an enemy unit here' to the Pup, and 053.1 with 136.2.d make that 'I' the Pup and not the gear.
- On the opponent's turn they attack a battlefield you control. 464.2.c.2 makes you the Defender, and 383.4.f fires the Pup's own clause off YOUR designation rather than his.
- Move him to that battlefield for free (449; 420.3.a keeps the exhaust on the Standard Move alone).
- 319.8 and 323.2.a open the Cleanup that follows the move and 464.2.c.3.a designates him Defender in it. 383.4.f.2 then puts the Bow's trigger on the Chain: deal 2 to an enemy unit there.
- On your own turn, attack with him instead. 383.4.e fires the same sentence off the Attacker designation (464.2.c.3) - the second execution of the round trip.
- 383.4.e.2.a and 383.4.f.2.a cap each combat at one execution, so do not spend a move trying to re-enter the same combat.
Per iteration
2 damage to an enemy unit every time you defend anywhere and every time the carrier attacks - two executions per round trip from one body
How it ends
engine - 2 damage per combat, on BOTH sides of the turn cycle, for a one-off 5 Energy and one Fury Power. It is a Might filter, not a clock: 143.3.b heals the chip at the end of each turn and in every Combat Cleanup, and nothing here scores

How this entry was audited
REFUTE = a refutation pass, with its date and verdict · WOUNDED = the pass found a flaw and the entry was rewritten · BUDGETED = the pass checked the recycle-and-draw ledger · lens = the hunt that proposed it.
383.4.e.1, 383.4.e.3, 383.4.f.1, 383.4.f.2.b and 383.4.f.3 were cited by nothing in data/combos.json or data/synergies.json when this entry was staged - measured 2026-09-12 at catalogue 744. The finding is not a missing paragraph but a missing HALF - six entries use an attack-or-defend card and none prices the defend execution. The zero-cards-say-when-you-attack measurement was run three ways per the standing rule on surprising absences. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt; legend census from data/cards.json. Cross-reference: loyal-pup-jagged-cutlass-free-defensive-relay walks the same relocation with a different gear and is owed the 383.4.f citation that explains it.
