Combo · ENGINE
Deathgrip pays the Spectral Centaur twice for one death — the dying body's whole Might, plus the Centaur's own +2, at Reaction speed
Pieces
- Spectral Centaur ×1
UNL-068 · payoff · mind
When another friendly unit dies, give me +2 Might this turn.
- Deathgrip ×3
SFD-163 · engine · order
[Reaction] (Play any time, even before spells and abilities resolve.) Kill a friendly unit. If you do, give +Might equal to its Might to another friendly unit this turn. Draw 1.
Payoff
Deck
- Mind + Order: Spectral Centaur is mono-Mind and Deathgrip mono-Order, so the legend must hold both and the pool prints exactly four names — OGN-265 Herald of the Arcane, OGS-021 Lady of Luminosity, SFD-201 Chem-Baroness and UNL-199 Deceiver (103.1.b.2).
- Neither card is banned or restricted in either format, and neither is a Signature card, so 103.2.d.2 forces no legend.
- You need a second friendly body worth spending. Any body works — the cheapest is one that was going to die anyway, such as a [Temporary] Sprite (816.1.b) on the turn it is scheduled to be killed.
Prerequisites
- ARITHMETIC WITH THE QUANTITIES DECLARED. Deathgrip on a friendly unit of Might X, pointed at the Centaur, is +X from the spell AND +2 from the Centaur's own trigger, because 'another friendly unit dies' is exactly what just happened. The Centaur ends the turn at 5 + X + 2. Eating a 5-Might body puts him at 12 for 2 Energy; eating a 3-Might Sprite that was going to die anyway puts him at 10 for 2 Energy and no real card. Three Deathgrips in one turn on the same Centaur are 5 + 6 + (X1+X2+X3).
- BOTH BONUSES ARE CONTINUOUS MODIFIERS, WHICH IS WHY THEY STACK. 702.3 is 'There can only be one Buff on a Unit at a time' and 702.3.a says a second buff 'is not placed instead' — but neither of these is a Buff. '+N Might this turn' is a plain modifier and 702.3 never touches it, the same distinction the project drew for Lee Sin, Centered and for Soul Shepherd's static. So the Centaur is one of the few bodies in the pool whose Might genuinely adds up.
- THE CENTAUR CAN NEVER BE THE FUEL. His clause reads 'another friendly unit dies' and Deathgrip's transfer reads 'another friendly unit', so the killed body is excluded from both. If the Centaur is your only other body, the line does not exist.
- WHY [Reaction] IS THE WHOLE POINT. 813.1.c.1: on cards, Reaction is functionally short for 'This can be played during Closed States on any player's turn.' 465.2.c has each player assign 'an amount of damage equal to their summed Might', and the Might is read at assignment — so the spike is cast inside the opponent's combat, after they have committed, and it both raises the Centaur's contribution and makes him survive a bill that was lethal a moment earlier. On your own turn it does the mirror job on the attack.
- IT REPLACES ITSELF BUT IT DOES NOT MAKE CARDS. Deathgrip draws 1, so the spell is card-neutral: -1 card played, +1 drawn, -1 body. Do not price this as card advantage; the product is Might at instant speed and a body converted into it.
- NOTHING IN THIS IDENTITY TURNS THE MIGHT INTO POINTS. The excess-damage payoffs (OGN-034 Tryndamere's 'excess damage' threshold, R28 = A) are Fury, and Mind/Order has no Might-to-points converter at all — the finding of the #159 pass. So a 12-Might Centaur wins a combat and nothing more; classify it ENGINE and do not reach for BURST.
- THE MIGHT EXPIRES. 317.2.c inserts '3d. All "this turn" effects expire simultaneously' into the end-of-turn Cleanup, so every point of this is gone by the opponent's turn — it has to be re-bought each time, and the copies are capped at three by 103.2.b.
Bodies no card supplies
Have Spectral Centaur (6 Energy) on the board with at least one other friendly unit beside him
Steps
- Have Spectral Centaur (6 Energy) on the board with at least one other friendly unit beside him.
- Wait for the window that matters: the opponent's Combat, after they have committed their attackers, or your own attack.
- Play Deathgrip for 2 Energy at Reaction speed (813.1.c.1). Kill your other unit.
- Deathgrip gives the Centaur +Might equal to the killed unit's Might this turn, and draws you 1.
- The Centaur's own trigger sees 'another friendly unit dies' and gives him a further +2 this turn.
- Assign combat damage with the raised Might (465.2.c). Everything expires at the end-of-turn Cleanup (317.2.c), so repeat next turn with another Deathgrip; three copies is the cap (103.2.b).
Per iteration
+X+2 Might on the Centaur for one body and 2 Energy, at Reaction speed, and the card is replaced
How it ends
engine only — three Deathgrips a game, each consumed, and every point of Might expires at the end-of-turn Cleanup (317.2.c); nothing in Mind/Order converts the Might into points

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-07 (issue #168, matrix group 27, friendly-dies x UNL-068). Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt. Citations opened: 103.1.b.2, 103.2.b, 103.2.d.2, 317.2.c, 465.2.c, 702.3, 702.3.a, 813.1.c.1, 816.1.b. Distinct from malzahar-wraith-centaur-sacrifice, whose feeder is Malzahar's exhaust-gated sacrifice on YOUR turn and whose product is 2 rainbow Power and a card: this line is Reaction speed, works inside the opponent's combat, and pays the killed body's WHOLE Might rather than a flat +2. Ban check: neither card is banned or restricted. Trap check: the Centaur is excluded from both 'another' clauses; the bonuses are continuous modifiers and not 702 buffs; the Might expires at 317.2.c; no Might-to-points converter exists in Mind/Order, so no BURST is claimed; no token, no Recall, no Repeat, no unruled reading.
