Stare Down opens the battlefield, Miss Fortune lets anyone walk in
Pieces
- Stare Down ×3
UNL-107 · engine · body
Choose a friendly unit and a battlefield. Move all enemy units at that battlefield with less Might than the chosen unit to their base. Gain 1 XP.
- Miss Fortune, Buccaneer ×1
OGN-193 · payoff · chaos
You may play me to an open battlefield. Friendly units may be played to open battlefields.
Payoff
Deck
- Body + Chaos: UNL-201 Voidreaver (Kha'Zix) and OGN-267 Bounty Hunter (Miss Fortune) both hold it (103.1.b.2).
- A friendly unit with more Might than every body in the target garrison — that is Stare Down's own bar, and it is per unit, not a sum.
Prerequisites
- 'Open' is BOTH conditions, not one. 170.11.c: 'Battlefields can be “open.” This means they are unoccupied and uncontrolled.' Stare Down supplies the first by moving the garrison to their base; 323.6 supplies the second in the same Cleanup, because a player loses control of a battlefield their units no longer occupy. #146's walk found that entries had been leaning on half of this rule.
- The ORDER is forced and the entry follows #58's finding: the evacuation must happen BEFORE anything of yours enters. After a play or a move the next Cleanup both stages a Combat (323.9) and opens it (323.13) with no gap, and 323.10 only un-stages a Combat that has not yet opened. Stare Down is a plain spell with neither [Action] nor [Reaction], so 155 confines it to 'an Open State outside of Showdowns on its controller's turn' — it cannot be cast from inside a combat at all.
- Evacuating is not yet a Conquer (#102): 323.6 only STRIPS the opponent's Control, nobody gains it. The point needs a body of yours walking in during the Main Phase, and Miss Fortune's static is what makes that body ANY unit you control rather than only one of the four 355.2.b cards.
- It scores the same turn: 190.3.a.1 applies Contested on the play, 344.2 stages a Showdown at the next Cleanup (no Combat: there are no opposing units), 348.2.a establishes Control at its close and 348.2.a.1 says outright 'This results in a Conquer.'
- 470 caps it at one Score per battlefield per turn, so three Stare Downs in a turn are three evacuations but not three points at the same battlefield.
- Sibling: renekton-stare-down-evacuate runs the same spell with a Renekton payoff and never leaves the Body identity. This one pays two Energy of splash for a permission no other card in the pool grants.
- A BLOODLESS CONQUER IS NOT A FAIT ACCOMPLI, AND 46 OF THE 47 ENTRIES CITING 344.2 DID NOT SAY SO (added 2026-09-12, #187 batch 25). **316.8.b.1.a**: during a Non-Combat Showdown *"units controlled by a different player may become present at the Battlefield where the Showdown is"*, which converts it to a COMBAT Showdown in the following cleanup - so the opponent can turn your uncontested walk-in into a fight. 316.8.c is the permission (a Showdown is a Window of Opportunity for [Action] and [Reaction] cards). **The answer set is THREE CARDS, swept on the ACTOR rather than on the destination**: `OGN-173 Ride the Wind` (Chaos, E2+1), `OGN-262 Zenith Blade` (Calm/Order, E3+2) and `SFD-184 Relentless Pursuit` (Fury/Body, E2+1) - twelve printings move a friendly unit, and nine of them send it to base or need a body already there. They span three identities, so **no identity is safe**; and `OGN-262 Zenith Blade` is the worst to walk into, because it STUNS your body on the way in, and 423.1.b removes a stunned unit`s contribution to the damage step while 423.1.c keeps its full Might as the price to kill it - one 3-Energy card takes the unit and the battlefield. **[Ambush] is not a fourth answer**: 822.1.b needs a battlefield where the player already has units, and the defining feature of that board is that they have none there. **THE REMEDY IS A COUNTERSPELL, AND A FIRST VERSION OF THIS NOTABLE SAID SOMETHING FALSE THAT IS WITHDRAWN HERE (corrected within the hour, 2026-09-12).** It said that because all three answers are [Action] and 358.4 admits an Action card only as the card that CLOSES the state, the attacker - who holds Focus by 345 and priority by 335.1 - could shut them out by playing any cheap Action card first. Every step is true and the conclusion is false, because **a Showdown is a LOOP, not a single window**: 346 - *"When the last item on the chain resolves and the turn returns to an Open State during a Showdown, Focus passes, and the next Player gains both Focus and Priority"* - with 347.1.b and 347.2.a. Closing the state buys a lock-out lasting exactly that CHAIN; when it resolves the Showdown reopens, Focus passes TO THE DEFENDER, and they play their answer into an open Showdown after all. **The real sequence**: walk in, take Focus, **PASS** (acting first gains nothing); they play the answer, which closes the state as it is played; **you COUNTER it**, since 358.4`s other half now admits only [Reaction] and all eleven of the pool`s counters are Reaction, and 425.1.c refunds them nothing; all players then pass in sequence, 347.2.a ends the Showdown, and 348.2.a with 348.2.a.1 give you Control and the Conquer. The cheap counter is `OGN-045 Defy` (Calm, E1 + 1 Power, *"counter a spell that costs no more than 4 Energy and no more than one rainbow"*), which covers all three answers; `OGN-064 Wind Wall` is the unconditional one. **So the protection narrows to pairs containing CALM** - it is not the one-Energy insurance any deck can buy.
- THE THIRD LEG OF THE EVACUATION FAMILY, ADDED BESIDE 323.6 AND 323.10 (#204, from #187 batch 18). This entry already cites 323.6 for Control being stripped and 323.10 for a staged Combat un-staging. The Contested STATUS itself is a third thing and 190.3.b.1 is the paragraph for it, cited by nothing in 766 entries: 'If a player who applied Contested status to a Battlefield controls no Units there and there is no ongoing Showdown or Combat at that Battlefield, then Contested status is removed in the following Cleanup.' With 323.11, which removes Contested from the battlefield's side, the pair states it from both directions. The boundary worth carrying beside it is 190.3.d - 'At this time Game Effects cannot reference this status' - so Contested is real, it decides whether a Combat or a Non-Combat Showdown occurs, and no card in the pool can see it.
Steps
- In your Main Phase, cast Stare Down for E2 choosing your biggest body and the enemy battlefield. Every enemy unit there with less Might than it moves to their base — programmatically, so no [Deflect] is paid (355.10.d).
- The Cleanup runs: 323.6 strips the opponent's Control of a battlefield their units no longer occupy. The battlefield is now unoccupied and uncontrolled, which is 170.11.c's definition of open.
- With Miss Fortune, Buccaneer on the board, play ANY friendly unit to that open battlefield (355.2.b: 'Such locations become Valid for the purposes of Playing the Unit').
- 190.3.a.1 applies Contested. No opposing units are present, so 323.9 stages no Combat and 344.2 stages a Showdown instead.
- 348.2.a establishes your Control at its close and 348.2.a.1 makes it a Conquer, on the same turn (470 permitting).
How it ends
engine only — one Conquer per evacuated battlefield per turn, three evacuations a game (103.2.b), capped by 470's one Score per battlefield per turn. Nothing here gains a point beyond the Conquer itself.

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-06 (docs/phase0/walks/2026-09-06-orphan-synergy-rules.md §21), issue #153, from the orphan rule stare-down-empties-the-garrison. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt. Both halves of 170.11.c are checked, which is the correction #146 made to three entries that had leaned on 'uncontrolled' alone. Trap check: the empty-battlefield trap is respected in the strongest form — there is no attack and no Attacker designation anywhere in this line, the point comes from a Showdown (344.2 / 348.2.a.1), not from a Combat; no [Repeat]; no [Temporary]; no token; the evacuation is a move by effect, not a Recall, so 455 does not carve it out; 167 is not touched. Depends on no unruled reading.
