814.2 sums granted Shields, and Stalwart Poro under Block is the rules' own worked example — Taric makes it a third instance
Pieces
- Taric, Protector ×1
OGN-074 · engine · calm
[Shield] (+1 Might while I'm a defender.) [Tank] (I must be assigned combat damage first.) Other friendly units here have [Shield].
- Stalwart Poro ×3
OGN-052 · payoff · calm
[Shield] (+1 Might while I'm a defender.)
- Block ×3
OGN-057 · enabler · calm
[Hidden] (Hide now for 1 Power of any domain to react with later for 0 Energy.) [Action] (Play on your turn or in showdowns.) Give a unit [Shield 3] and [Tank] this turn. (+3 Might while it's a defender. It must be assigned combat damage first.)
Payoff
Deck
- Any Calm legend: all three cards are mono-Calm (103.1.b.1) and none is a Signature card, so 103.2.d.2 forces nothing.
- None of the three is banned or restricted in either format.
- Taric must be AT the same battlefield as the bodies he is paying — his grant reads 'Other friendly units here'.
Prerequisites
- 814.2 IS THE RULE AND STALWART PORO IS ITS OWN EXAMPLE. 'If a Unit has Shield, or has been granted Shield, and is granted Shield by an additional source, the Shield Value of all granted Shield keywords is summed.' The Core Rules illustrate it with 'Stalwart Poro has Shield. It is chosen as the target of Block, which says "Give a unit [Shield 3]"' — i.e. Shield 4. Taric adds a third instance for free, and 814.1.b.3 ('If X is omitted, it is presumed to be 1') is what makes each bare [Shield] worth exactly 1.
- ARITHMETIC WITH THE QUANTITIES DECLARED. A Stalwart Poro standing beside Taric has its own [Shield] 1 and Taric's granted [Shield] 1: Shield 2, so it defends at 2 + 2 = 4 for two Energy. Cast Block on it and 814.2 sums all three: Shield 5, defending at 7. Three Poros beside Taric are three 4 Might defenders (12 summed) before any Block; with a Block on each they are 7, 7 and 7 — 21 summed Might for 6 Energy in bodies, 6 Energy in spells and Taric's 4 Energy + 1 Calm Power. 814.1.c is why none of it applies on offence: Shield is 'functionally short for "While I am a defender, I have +X [M]"'.
- [Tank] IS ON BOTH HALVES AND IT IS A COST AS WELL AS A BENEFIT. 815.1.c.2: 'Units without Tank are invalid assignments until all units with Tank have lethal damage assigned to them.' Taric has printed [Tank] and Block grants it, so the bodies you have inflated are ALSO the bodies the attacker is forced to kill first — which is the point on defence, and which makes this package anti-synergic with any line whose bodies have to survive the opponent's turn (the Grand Plaza family).
- BLOCK IS FREE AT THE RIGHT MOMENT. 811.1.b hides it face down at a battlefield you control for one rainbow Power and lets it be played later 'ignoring its base cost'; it is also [Action], so 806.1.b lets it be played inside a Showdown on either player's turn. The Shield therefore lands AFTER the attacker has committed, which 465.2.b and 465.2.c read when they sum Might and assign damage.
- IT ALL EXPIRES EXCEPT TARIC'S HALF. Block says 'this turn', so 317.2.c takes its Shield 3 and its [Tank] away at the end-of-turn Cleanup; Taric's grant is a passive ability with no duration and lasts as long as he stands there. Three Blocks (103.2.b) is three combats.
- UNL-041 Allay, Eager Admirer IS THE SAME SHAPE FOR THE OTHER KEYWORD, AND IT IS NOT IN uses[] ON PURPOSE. 'While I'm at a battlefield, your other units here have [Deflect]' grants an opponent-only tax (809.1.c) rather than Might, so it does not sum with anything here and it does not change a single number in this entry — it is a deckbuilding companion, not an ingredient.
Steps
- Play Taric, Protector (4 Energy + 1 Calm Power) to the battlefield you intend to defend.
- Play Stalwart Poros (2 Energy each) to the same battlefield. Each has its own [Shield] and Taric's granted [Shield]: 814.2 sums them to Shield 2, so each defends at 4.
- Hide Block face down at that battlefield for one rainbow Power (811.1.b), or hold it in hand.
- When the opponent attacks and has committed, play Block for 0 from face down — it is [Action], so 806.1.b admits it in the Showdown.
- 814.2 sums all three instances on the chosen Poro: Shield 5, defending at 7, with [Tank] on top of Taric's.
- 815.1.c.2 forces every point of the attacker's damage onto the [Tank] bodies first, and 465.2.b/465.2.c read the raised Might when the sums are taken.
Per iteration
a 2 Energy body defending at 4 beside Taric, and at 7 with a Block, with [Tank] forcing the damage onto it
How it ends
engine only — Taric's grant lasts while he stands there, Block is three copies and expires at the end-of-turn Cleanup (317.2.c); nothing here scores and none of it applies on offence (814.1.c)

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-07 (issue #174, the uncatalogued Calm/Mind/Order lane). OGN-074 Taric Protector, OGN-052 Stalwart Poro and OGN-057 Block were ALL in no entry before this, and 814.2's worked example names two of the three. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt. Citations opened: 103.1.b.1, 103.2.b, 103.2.d.2, 317.2.c, 465.2.b, 465.2.c, 806.1.b, 809.1.c, 811.1.b, 814.1.b.3, 814.1.c, 814.2, 815.1.c.2. Ban check: none of the three is banned or restricted. Trap check: Shield applies only on defence (814.1.c), stated in the terminatesIn as well as a notable; [Tank] is priced as a cost — it forces the attacker onto exactly the bodies you inflated, which makes the package anti-synergic with the Grand Plaza family; Block's half expires (317.2.c); UNL-041 Allay is named as a companion and deliberately kept OUT of uses[] because it changes no number here; no unruled reading.
