Deck
- Both cards are mono-Order, so 103.1.b.3 admits any legend with Order in its pair: SFD-201/SFD-249 Chem-Baroness, UNL-199/UNL-235 Deceiver, SFD-197/SFD-247 Emperor of the Sands, VEN-147/VEN-193 Eye of Twilight, SFD-205/SFD-251 Grand Duelist, UNL-195/UNL-233 Green Father, OGN-253/OGN-302 Hand of Noxus, VEN-155/VEN-197 Heart of the Tempest, OGN-265/OGN-308 Herald of the Arcane, UNL-203/UNL-237 Keeper of the Hammer, OGS-021 Lady of Luminosity - Starter, VEN-153/VEN-196 Matriarch of War, OGS-023 Might of Demacia - Starter, UNL-187/UNL-229 Piltover Enforcer, OGN-261/OGN-306 Radiant Dawn, OGN-269/OGN-310 The Boss, SFD-187/SFD-243 Void Burrower. OGN-269/OGN-310 The Boss is legal and is the one name to avoid - see the notables.
- Neither card is banned or restricted in either format, and neither is a Signature card.
- Any other card finalized earlier in the same turn, which is what [Legion] asks for; the Helm itself at 2 Energy does it on turn one of the package.
Prerequisites
- WHY A BUFF IS THE SCARCE THING. 702.2.a: 'To Buff a Unit, a player chooses a Unit and then places a buff on it.' 703: 'Each Buff individually contributes +1 Might to a Unit.' 702.3: 'There can only be one Buff on a Unit at a time', and 702.3.a: a buff added to a unit that already has one 'is not placed instead'. So a buffer is a one-time placement per body, and the Helm - which needs a BUFFED body to die - is always short of buffed bodies rather than of deaths. Trifarian Gloryseeker is the answer that costs no second card: it arrives buffed for 2 Energy.
- 812 IS WHY THE [LEGION] GATE IS FREE HERE, AND 812.2 IS CITED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THIS CATALOGUE. 812.1.b.1: 'Legion is functionally short for "If you have played another card this turn, this card gains [Text]."' 812.1.c: 'As long as a card different than the one with the Legion ability has been Finalized by you on the same turn then the Dependent Ability is Active' - finalized, so a spell that is later countered still switches it on. And 812.2: 'All instances of Legion on cards a player controls are satisfied by that player playing a single card.' Playing the Helm (2 Energy) first satisfies the gate on the same turn, and from turn two onward any card does.
- THE HELM PLACES ONE BUFF AND WASTES IT ON A BUFFED BODY. Its text is 'buff another friendly unit' - a single placement - and 702.3.a means it is thrown away if the chosen body already carries a buff. So the honest bound is min(deaths of buffed bodies, unbuffed bodies remaining), and a second Gloryseeker on the board is NOT a legal recipient: it already has its own buff. The recipients are the rest of your board.
- THE LEGEND THAT SWITCHES IT OFF, BY NAME. OGN-269 The Boss (Body/Order) reads 'If a buffed unit you control would die, you may pay :rb_rune_rainbow:, exhaust me, and spend its buff to heal it, exhaust it, and recall it instead.' 808.1.d.1: 'If the Permanent with the effect is not sent to the Trash, for example because its "killed" event was replaced with a recall, the triggered ability will be removed from the chain.' The save is exactly that replacement, and it also SPENDS the buff (702.2.b), so The Boss takes both halves. A mono-Order legend avoids the fork entirely.
- DISTINCT FROM THE TWO EXISTING HELM ENTRIES, AND THE DIFFERENCE IS WHICH SIDE IS SCARCE. vanguard-helm-kinkou-monk-buff-conservation pairs the Helm with a Body mass-placer (OGN-141, two buffs on one card) and is bounded by unbuffed bodies; vanguard-helm-baited-hook-buff-ladder pairs it with a repeatable sacrifice engine and is bounded by the sacrifice rate. This is the third case: the buff and the corpse are THE SAME CARD, so nothing has to be spent placing it and nothing has to be spent killing it - a Gloryseeker that trades in combat has already done the whole job.
- THE ARITHMETIC WITH THE QUANTITIES DECLARED. Helm 2 Energy once. Three Gloryseekers at 2 Energy each (103.2.b) are three buffed 3 Might bodies for 6 Energy total and three guaranteed Helm triggers when they die, each moving a +1 onto a body that had none. Nothing in the package pays Power.
- WHAT IT IS NOT. Nothing here scores; 469 defines Scoring as Conquer or Hold only, and neither card touches either.
Steps
- Play Vanguard Helm (2 Energy). It is a standing permanent with no exhaust in its trigger, so it fires on every qualifying death.
- Play Trifarian Gloryseeker (2 Energy). 812.1.c is already satisfied by the Helm finalized earlier this turn, so [Legion] is Active and the play trigger buffs the Gloryseeker itself.
- Send it to a battlefield and let it trade. 465.2.c reads its Might at assignment, so the buff is +1 in the damage step as well.
- When it dies the Helm triggers and places a buff on another friendly unit - one that does not already have one, since 702.3.a would otherwise waste it.
- Repeat with the second and third Gloryseekers (103.2.b). Each is a self-contained buffed corpse; no buffer is ever spent on them.
Per iteration
one buff moved onto a fresh body per Gloryseeker that dies, with no second card spent placing it
How it ends
engine only - three Gloryseekers by 103.2.b, and each recovery is wasted once every remaining body is buffed (702.3.a); nothing here scores
