The word 'printed' in 434.1.e is why a granted [Temporary] still kills an attached Equipment
Pieces
- Turn to Dust ×3
UNL-070 · payoff · mind
Give a gear [Temporary]. (Kill it at the start of its controller's Beginning Phase, before scoring.)
Payoff
Deck
- Mono-Mind, so 103.1.b.3 admits any legend with Mind in its pair.
- Not banned or restricted in either format, and not a Signature card.
- Nothing else. It has no condition and no threshold; the only question is whether the delay is acceptable.
Prerequisites
- THE SWEEP, WITH ITS MEMBERS NAMED. `grep -in "\[Temporary\]" data/corpus_flat.txt` over the grant clauses returns four cards that hand the keyword to something else: OGN-069 Last Stand (Calm, E3 + 1 Power, a friendly unit, alongside doubling its Might), OGN-180 Fading Memories (Chaos, E4 + 1 Power, 'a unit at a battlefield or a gear'), UNL-070 Turn to Dust (Mind, E2, a gear) and UNL-165 Shadow's Call (Order, E2, 'a friendly unit without [Temporary]', with Draw 2). Turn to Dust is the only one scoped to a gear, and at 2 Energy with no Power it is the cheapest.
- IT REACHES AN EQUIPPED GEAR, AND THE PARAGRAPH IS ONE WORD WIDE. 718.5.b: 'Attached cards still can be chosen or targeted by game effects while Attached', so an Equipment sitting on a unit is a legal choice. And 434.1.e - repeated at 718.2 - says 'Attaching one or more cards will cause those cards' PRINTED Rules Text to become Inactive for as long as they remain Attached.' A granted keyword is not printed Rules Text, so nothing switches it off: 816.1 makes [Temporary] a Triggered Ability keyword the object now has, and 816.1.b executes 'At the start of this permanent's controller's Beginning Phase, before scoring, kill this.' The word 'printed' is what makes this card an answer to an attached Trinity Force or Svellsongur rather than only to a standing gear.
- THE DELAY IS THE PRICE, AND IT IS NOT SMALL. 816.1.c: 'The Trigger Condition is the controller of the permanent's Beginning Phase starting' - THEIR Beginning Phase, not yours. So an enemy gear cast under this spell keeps working for the rest of your turn and the whole of theirs up to 315.2, and only then dies. This answers a standing engine, never a combat trick, and it cannot save a combat that is happening now.
- AND IT DOES KILL, WHICH CUTS BOTH WAYS. The gear reaches the Trash, so 808.1.a ('It is present on Permanents') lets any Deathknell on it fire; and 719.5 detaches it from its carrier first if it was attached, with 719.5.a letting the controller of the Top-Most Card order the detaches. Against a gear whose death pays its owner, a bounce or a banish would be better - this pool has neither in Mind at 2 Energy.
- 816.2 CAPS THE OBVIOUS MISPLAY. 'Multiple instances of Temporary are redundant', so a second copy aimed at the same gear does nothing at all. Three copies (103.2.b) answer three different gears.
- AND IT IS ALSO A SCHEDULED DEATH FOR YOUR OWN GEAR, WHICH IS A REAL USE. 315.1's Awakening Phase precedes 315.2's Beginning Phase, so everything you control is already READY when a [Temporary] permanent dies - which makes any payoff whose cost is its own exhaust free against that death. Pointed at a gear of yours that has already done its job, this is 2 Energy for a guaranteed death on a schedule you chose.
- WHY IT IS A SINGLE-CARD ENTRY. Nothing in the pool makes it bigger: it is not a recycle, it has no threshold, and 816.2 forbids stacking it. Its value is the scope of one word in 434.1.e, which is a property of the card and not of a pairing.
- WHAT IT IS NOT. Nothing here scores; 469 defines Scoring as Conquer or Hold.
Steps
- Choose the gear. 718.5.b means an Equipment attached to a unit is a legal choice, and 434.1.e's 'printed' is why the granted keyword still applies to it.
- Play Turn to Dust (2 Energy). The gear now has [Temporary].
- 816.1.b kills it at the start of ITS CONTROLLER's Beginning Phase, before scoring - so an enemy gear survives the rest of your turn and all of theirs until 315.2.
- 719.5 detaches it from any carrier as it leaves the board, and 719.5.a lets that card's controller order the detaches.
- Do not aim a second copy at the same gear: 816.2 makes multiple instances redundant.
- Used on your OWN spent gear it is a scheduled death, and 315.1 has readied everything before 315.2 fires it.
Per iteration
one gear killed, on its controller's next Beginning Phase, for 2 Energy and no Power
How it ends
engine only - three copies by 103.2.b, one gear each, and 816.2 forbids stacking; nothing here scores and the kill is always a turn late

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-07 (issue #188). The first entry to use UNL-070 Turn to Dust. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt. Citations opened and quoted: 103.1.b.3, 103.2.b, 315.1, 315.2, 434.1.e, 469, 718.2, 718.5.b, 719.5, 719.5.a, 808.1.a, 816.1, 816.1.b, 816.1.c, 816.2. The load-bearing reading is the SCOPE of 434.1.e - it makes an attached card's PRINTED Rules Text Inactive, and a granted keyword is not printed Rules Text - which is what lets this reach an equipped gear. Stated with the quote rather than filed as a numbered reading, because the word is in the paragraph. UNIQUENESS SWEPT: four cards grant [Temporary] to something else, all named, and this is the only gear-only one. Ban check: not banned or restricted, not a Signature card. No unruled reading.
