Vanguard Helm is the only card in the pool that recovers a buff from a corpse — and 702.3 is why that is worth a card
Pieces
- Vanguard Helm ×1
OGN-228 · payoff · order
When a buffed friendly unit dies, buff another friendly unit. (If it doesn't have a buff, it gets a +1 Might buff.)
- Kinkou Monk ×3
OGN-141 · engine · body
When you play me, buff up to two other friendly units. (Each one that doesn't have a buff gets a +1 Might buff.)
Payoff
Deck
- Body + Order: Kinkou Monk is mono-Body and Vanguard Helm mono-Order (103.1.b.3), so the legend must hold both and the pool prints exactly five names — OGN-269 The Boss, OGS-023 Might of Demacia - Starter, SFD-205 Grand Duelist, UNL-203 Keeper of the Hammer and VEN-153 Matriarch of War (103.1.b.2).
- Neither card is banned or restricted in either format, and neither is a Signature card.
- The buffs have to be on bodies that will actually die — combat casualties, or fodder for a sacrifice outlet. A buffed body that survives keeps its buff and the Helm never fires.
Prerequisites
- WHY A BUFF IS SCARCE, WHICH IS WHY RECOVERING ONE IS AN ENGINE. 702.3: 'There can only be one Buff on a Unit at a time', and 702.3.a: 'If a Buff is added, or instructed to be added, on a Unit that already has a Buff, it is not placed instead.' 703 makes each buff exactly +1 Might. So a buffer is not a repeatable pump — it is a one-time placement per body, and once every body you own is buffed, every further buffer in the deck is a blank. Vanguard Helm is the only card in the pool that puts a buff back into circulation when its host dies. This was swept with `grep -inE "dies.*buff|buff.*dies"` over data/corpus_flat.txt: one hit, and it is the Helm.
- 702.2.a IS WHY IT IS A CHOOSING, AND 355.10 IS WHY THAT MATTERS. 'To Buff a Unit, a player chooses a Unit and then places a buff on it.' So the Helm's buff and the Monk's both CHOOSE — which fires every 'when you choose me' payoff in the deck (SFD-057 Irelia, Fervent, SFD-195 Blade Dancer) and which is what makes a mass buffer valuable beyond its Might.
- ARITHMETIC WITH THE QUANTITIES DECLARED. Kinkou Monk is 4 Energy + 1 Body Power for a 4 Might body and two buffs, i.e. +2 Might spread over two other bodies. When either buffed body dies, the Helm places its buff on a third body — so the Monk's two buffs are worth two placements plus one recovery per death, for as long as unbuffed bodies remain. Three Monks (103.2.b) is six initial placements. The Helm itself is 2 Energy, once.
- IT NEVER CHAINS TWICE OFF ONE DEATH, AND IT NEVER DOUBLES A BODY. The Helm's own text is 'buff another friendly unit' — a single placement — and 702.3.a means that placement is wasted if the chosen body already carries a buff. So the honest bound is min(deaths of buffed bodies, unbuffed bodies remaining), the same shape the #106 walk found for Karma, Channeler on a token engine.
- THE ONE LEGEND THAT SWITCHES IT OFF. OGN-269 The Boss is Body/Order and therefore a legal legend for this line, but its replacement — 'If a buffed unit you control would die, you may pay :rb_rune_rainbow:, exhaust me, and spend its buff to heal it, exhaust it, and recall it instead' — replaces the death, so no death event occurs and the Helm does not trigger; it also spends the buff. That is the 808.1.d.1 shape (a would-die replacement erasing a death trigger) applied to a buff. Using both is a choice per body, never a combination.
- THE BUFF IS NOT A '+N THIS TURN'. It persists (702.2), so a body the Helm buffs stays a point of Might larger until something spends it (702.2.b). That is what separates this from every 'this turn' pump in the catalogue, and it is also why the crossing it causes is a one-time 709 event.
Steps
- Play Vanguard Helm (2 Energy).
- Play Kinkou Monk (4 Energy + 1 Body Power) and buff up to two other friendly units — 702.3 means each buff has to go on a different unbuffed body.
- Let a buffed body die: in combat, or to any sacrifice outlet you run.
- The Helm triggers and buffs another friendly unit — the buff is back in circulation on a body that did not have one.
- Repeat for every buffed body that dies, while unbuffed bodies remain; the bound is min(deaths of buffed bodies, unbuffed bodies left).
- Play the second and third Monks on later turns for two more placements each (103.2.b).
Per iteration
one buff recovered onto a fresh body per buffed casualty, on top of the Monk's two placements per card
How it ends
engine only — bounded by min(deaths of buffed bodies, unbuffed bodies remaining) and by three Kinkou Monks; nothing here scores, and a body that survives keeps its buff and pays nothing

HAND-WALKED 2026-09-07 (issue #168, matrix groups 25 and 31, friendly-dies and buff x OGN-228). OGN-141 Kinkou Monk was in NO entry before this. Card text verbatim from data/corpus_flat.txt. Citations opened: 103.1.b.2, 103.1.b.3, 103.2.b, 103.2.d.2, 355.10, 702.2, 702.2.a, 702.2.b, 702.3, 702.3.a, 703, 709, 808.1.d.1. UNIQUENESS SWEPT, NOT ASSUMED: `grep -inE "dies.*buff|buff.*dies"` over the whole corpus returns exactly one card, OGN-228. Distinct from vanguard-helm-baited-hook-buff-ladder, whose partner is a repeatable one-body-a-turn sacrifice engine and whose point is the tutor ceiling climbing two Might a turn: this is the mass-placement side, and its bound is the supply of UNBUFFED bodies rather than the sacrifice rate. Ban check: neither card is banned or restricted. Trap check: 702.3.a wastes a recovered buff aimed at a buffed body; the Helm places one buff per death and never chains; OGN-269 The Boss is a legal legend that switches the whole thing off (a would-die replacement is not a death), stated by name; no unruled reading.
